I remeber seeing some posts asking how this lens performs with an extender attached so I thought I'd post an example. I'm very impressed to say the least - the shot below was shot hand held at maximum range, f/8, ISO 400. Sorry I didn't take a shot at the wide end so you could see just how far away the tower was. Only lightened a little in PS, no sharpening etc done at all.

Fantastic........Nice detail.
I'm taking my 2x converter with a 55-200 usm lense to the Rugby league today. The light looks good hopefully I get some good shots. But i'll have to venure into manual focusing as Auto will be too slow with the doubler.

I tried out my 1.4x TC on my 100-400.
One thing i did notice with this combination was you had to get the manual focusing spot-on(remember you loose auto focus with the TC attached). With hardly any movement on the focusing ring to take it out of focus. You imagine trying to get a spot on focus on a moving subject  .

Using the combination on the 1DMkII you don't lose AF :)

Hi Paul
the images look pretty good to me, i do think you made the right choice in keeping that lens.
quite often we see shots taken at the long end with converter fitted & also of vary distant subject matter, sure the combination will produce the goods.
However some great results can be achieved when used close to the subject and at the 400 end
as limited depth of field can be wonderful.
to extend the use of the 100 - 400 get yourself a 12mm extension tube, for money spent its one great bit of kit often i felt at 100mm lens would not allow close enough focus.
Cheers

Hi there Martin, I had to smile when I read this. As you may know I had ordered the 400 f5.6 prime but decided to sell it and keep the 100-400, but as of this afternoon I've decided to keep it, as well as the 100-400 :-). I really want to do more wildlife photography and I think having the option of using the 400 prime which is a bit lighter and has a lot faster AF would make sense. I can always sell it at a later date if it doesn't get any use.
Take a look at this image http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=68134, I'm going to make it my goal this summer to get a decent Kestrel shot! ;-)

Is that true? You lose auto focus with the teleconverter? Is that with a Canon TC or another brand?

Completely lose AF? Or does it just slow down or something? Because it would really suck if it lost all AF abilities.

sure theres nothing quite like being indecisive & its always useful to have a spare L kicking around somewhere, (I'm told that if you buy four 400mm white L series lenses and a piece of white faced laminate board, it makes a nice coffee table. just glue the rear caps under the board and of course you can then take off as required) ????????
Sorry about that just me being silly.
Did you take a look at my Kestral pics i did on Guernsey with my 100 to 400 they are on my pbase gallery.

if you would like to take a look at the sticky at the top of this section on lenses all will be revealed, including some info from me about which lenses are useable with extenders.
this will help you decide if thinking of purchase.

Thanks mate, you've got some beautiful birds over there, I mean that most sincerely, has to be said i do think that kestral was posing for me about 30ft away on a car park sign, quite close to that spot was a reserve with a hide and pond, got some nice shots of Shovelers from the hide.
Oystercatchers, egrets and many other birds i found and photographed Iwould recomend Guernsey
to anyone not visited before.
Cheers

As far as I know, this is a thing makes 100-400+1.4x's autofocus work a little (on non-1 series bodies): http://www.fredmiranda.com/TipsPage/
"How to activate auto focus (AF), when using 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters with f/5.6 or slower lenses."

That's the popular, and widely reported "taping" trick. And, BTW, could you please put less effort into using fancy fonts - it makes your posts hard to read.

Sorry! But I didn't put the other font...
It was there 'before'.
Here is normal font, so at least you can see what I write.
I said "so the autofocus will work a little". That means, it can hunt very much, especially in low light.

I use the tape trick with the Kenko Pro 300DG with 100-400 on my 350D and AF works unless the light is very low. It does seem a bit slower but better than MF
