need help in picking lens for a 20d.... a good starter lens should do. 28-135mm maybe?

My pick is the Tamron 28-75 together with the 50mm F1.8. The recommended 28-135 is good, but with a smaller aperture will let you be less creative with narrow depth of field (ie blurring the background).

... and the 18-55 kit lens!
Not stellar, but it does the wide angle job if it needs to be done.

i`d get the 28-75 too, since i`ve had mine i`ve not used the 50 though, so i`m not sure you would want both

28-135 IS is a good lens for the money. The zoom range is great for composition. I am able to poke my nose in all kinds of places that the 75mm can't. IS is a real help. (I wish it were the new generation IS.) 28mm is plenty wide for candids. All this for about $400. Not too heavy, not too long. I've got other better lenses, but this is my do it all walk around lens that takes pretty crisp pictures.
