Long weekend at VIR, first time using my 100-400mm on a Rebel XS.... still have a lot to learn that's for sure! I had trouble with the camera metering being fooled all weekend, ended up having to shoot in manual mode.

you are right- I had trouble for the first three days with exposure on TV, and went to manual on the last day.
Also, I had a lot of trouble getting the cars properly exposed while having the background not washed out. For some reason I had to underexpose everything by a good deal in order to get pictures that weren't super bright and washed out.

They look pretty good to me, Dennis. The DOF is a little small in some, and one or two are a little OOF, but overall better than what I normally get! I really like the first one with Ed Womer oversteering in 4.
Were you in T1 for this little show? If not, this should explain why the 86 car never came by after the parade lap!

I was in the turn 4 complex, I didn't see the car flip over but I saw the aftermath. Really really scary.
The fact that the rollbar and camera didn't get touched tells you just how violent it was, incredible.
I got some pictures of the car after it was brought to impound.

as for the technical aspects of my pictures- I was shooting with an XS, so the focusing is tough with moving objects. I was still pleased with the amount of keepers I was able to get, the little guy worked as hard as he could! I was standing next to a "pro" photographer with a press pass and a 1D for a little while. We were both taking the same pictures from the same angle, every time a car came through the turn I would take one shot, and he would rip off about 8!

They're all passable shots. I like the tail-out FV, and the way you can see the smoke from the carbon fiber being ground off on #3. Hope the driver of that FE is ok. Maybe it's karma for putting Ferrari badges on an SCCA chassis w/ a Mazda powerplant? ;)

One "safe" approach is to exposed for he ground as a start. Then adjust properly as time goes by in the day.
