i have often always thought about buying a web page domain!

this might sound daft but, do i just buy the name from any where and then find a place to host it?

or do most places come with free web space?

Most places throw in a domain name with the hosting service. I use www.Doteasy.com (http://www.Doteasy.com) for my hosting service.

You can indeed buy the domain name from anyone and hosting services from any other company, or you can often get both from the same company.

My advice is to keep them separate. That way if you need to change hosting providers for any reason, you're not going to have to worry about getting them to cancel your hosting but change your domain name to use other servers.

I've used a few hosting companies, and settled down with HostGator who have been very good. their service is cheap, their support top-notch, although their servers have been a little slower in recent months... for the cheap shared packages anyways.

my main worry is costs? im sure the prices wont include VAT but i hear that i will be charged if i go over my bandwith allowence!

are you notified of this or are you charged without any idea?

atleast my domain name will be mine for life now, im only using it as a hobby webpage but im quite excited

Having your own domain name is fun. I've owned a domain name for my wife and I, (http://www.LynandDave.com) (http://www.LynandDave.com), for over 10 years now. I also have had my photo domain for about 2 years now. Link to my site is below in my sig. Enjoy it!!! :D
