View Full Version : why is it always magenta?!

So a friend of mine is getting married in May. She can not afford a photographer, which is always the story right?!, so she asked me to come and take a few shots for her. After saying no 80 times she has guilted me into it. I told her I did not have the equipment she needs for wedding pictures.....<fast forward>..... her wedding is outside, at 2:30 (of course, full afternoon sun) and her bridesmaid will be wearing magenta and lime green.

Would you all recommend a filter to keep the magenta from turning out horrible? Or some other advice? I will be searching for open shade. I searched the forum and google but cant really find any help on magenta colors in BRIGHT AFTERNOON SUN.

Oh and I have an XSi kit gripped, nifty fifty, 550 EX several tripods and monopods and the old timmer, Rebel Ti and kit lens. Thats about it right now.... : (

Maybe my color theory or understanding of digital is way off, but why would magenta in particular be a problem?

Well I dont know, thats why I was asking. I fear the bright colors and the bright sun.

I fear bright colors too. Skittles and Barney the Dinosaur especially.

can you shoot in raw and post process afterward if necessary?

I'm not sure why magenta in bright afternoon sun is such an issue? Many have done it with no issues, without even a second thought. Myself included.

I'm curious... what is it about magenta? Is there something I am unaware of?

Yeah I've only been "concerned" about red due to the tendency to bleed but I don't really actively think about it or any other color.

I don't see any issues. The dresses will likely be reflective and will blow out if you're not careful, but if you expose for the dresses the skin will be dark. Shoot RAW and trust your histogram.

I wanted a catchy name and it seems like a lot of brides choose this color.

I plan to shoot in RAW and I have CS2 so I have that covered. Guess I am freaking out about nothing!

Oh, you have plenty to freak out about. Being pressured into shooting a wedding when you don't feel yourself properly experience/prepared/equipped will do that. Just do your best, and if they complain, remind them they got what they paid for...
