When you're looking for a boom, I'd suggest having a counterweight on the other side of where your light is positioned. That's one of the main reasons why I've seen a lot of booms fall over or hit someone over the head.
Secondly, a C-Stand might be able to hold up your light for you, provided you use sandbags on the legs of the C-Stand to hold it in place. you can get longer arms and whatnot for a nice hairlight, I usually position mine behind and above the backdrop so I don't see the stand in my shots.
If you'd like, I can show you my setup for that kind of shot - and I use Avenger C-Stands.

This Manfrotto 085BS boom with cine stand (http://www.bogenimaging.us/Jahia/site/bius/pid/6780?kindOfProductCollectionRequest=productDetail&productCode=085BS&productDescription=Heavy%20Duty%20Black%20Light%20 Boom,%20Incl.008BU%20Stand%20w/Casters&curBrandId=MAN&market=MKT3&product_from_search=true) is the new version of what I have. It is absolutely superb and worth every penny. There is a mistake on the page, though. The counterweight is a 15-pound assembly not 44 pounds.

I have AB boom. It works when using AB strip box with Ab400 has a hairlight but not good for positioning the softbox. I think all I have seen liked here don't appear to be easy on adjusting softbox position once it is up on the boom. My instructor has a nice boom stand where one can adjust the softbox by rotating a handle on the bottom, makes life so much easier. So I was spending money I would get one of those types.

As posted above, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont... 04456&is=REG; is the Avenger A700 boom, simply an amazing tool, and you can get roller wheels for it. Do a search, there was a whole thread on it. I shoot in my apartment living room using it to hang my 400BX with either a Deep Octa 39" or a 53" Octa from E*****om directly overhead. Plus if you need, I stores as just a light stand where the boom becomes the top riser which I think will go up 15'. It has both a junior spud adapter and a 5/8" retractable spud. This boom/stand is very easy to use and incredibly sturdy.

I would go with either a c-stand with an arm or a red wing arm with a high roller.
