I got an email from my boyfriend (who was pricing bodies) today asking me if he could get me an engagement camera instead of a ring.

As long as it has a 1 carat diamond as the shutter release button. :p

Know someone else who had this exact situation. She ended up getting the camera and never regretted it for a second. Remember, a diamond lasts forever, but a camera actually does something more than blinging up your finger. :)

Get a thoughtful but inexpensive ring and a thoughtful and REALLY expensive camera.

Yeh, but it depends on the person (even if she's a cameraholic). I worked in the jewellery industry for 6 years, and my family has been in it for 3 generations...The ladies love nothing more than being able to show off the diamonds. ;)

My first post I was taking the piss. This is definitely something you'd need to tred carefully with. :p

The OP is the lady and has 1,048 posts here. :D I think she'd love nothing more than to show off the camera. :D

I'm not a huge fan of diamonds. My favorite stone is blue topaz. I just want something pretty on my finger to remind me of how much I am loved more than I want something expensive to show off. :)

I just found the engagement camera idea to be cute and funny. I thought you guys would appreciate it, too.

Ah! No one pointed out that if you get an engagement camera with an engagement L lens, you'll be getting a RED ring. :)

I think it's very cute and shows that he's paying attention (rare). :D

I just heard a splat. That camera might be needed soon based on what kind of rackets I am hearing from the kitties.

Yeah, he's pretty awesome. He shares the photography bug, too. :D

Well, not all ladies - I've personally never liked diamonds. I would rather have the camera :D

I would take a simple gold band and run with the camera! My spouse knows the only bling I want is L Glass!

I made that trade a while back

I would say thats a very understanding gesture from your fiance.

Get a cheap ring and the expensive camera. You will be reminded of your love everytime you use it.

Go with the camera, and bond a nice blue star sapphire cabochon to the shutter button for the "engagement stone."

Get a CZ ring for a finger bling engagement badge.

Kitty, you know what you want. You told us. Get your nice topaz ring and you'll get a nice warm glow every time you look at it.

Then say "Yes, Thanks!" to the camera.

I got an engagement camera from my fiance. She paid for the camera and I had to buy the lenses and other kit

The ring will only be a single memory (that's when he gives it to you).

A new camera will MAKE memories for you, and very happy ones at that - for a long time to come.

A ring isn't a single memory. I think of my husband every time I glance at my ring, or spin it out of the way when I put gloves on. It's bigger than I ever wanted but it's what he wanted to give me and that's what counts. He also supports my photography and encourages me to buy new gear when I think I don't need it!

Kitty, if a blue topaz warms your heart then it would make a precious engagement ring for you. Remember, minimum of 2 1/2 months salary for a ring though, so anything left over should go to a body/lense offering ;)

Over 50% of marriages end in divorce........98% of Canon cameras last longer than most marriages. (make sure you get a pre-nup so no matter what happens you keep the camera) :)

I would definitely trade bling for a camera gear any day and this is coming from a married woman haha.

LOL!

Here's a new idea: why not get him a camera now and get a wedding band when the wedding comes? Perfect gift to keep him "hooked" for the time being!

Yeah, I'm keeping the camera no matter what.

Personally, I'd go for the camera now, and like I did, get a nice big diamond later when he can really afford it. A good diamond costs plenty more than a camera, even an 1DsMKIII. Believe me, I know. I'll give you a PM!

This is my thinking. Well, other than the diamond later. I'm not a "diamond girl" like most are. Gimme a colored stone any day.

I think bling over camera should be the way to go. The camera will lose value over time. The ring should not lose value after it's out the door depreciation?

Hadn't thought of it that way. I don't look at the camera as an "investment" because it has a limited lifespan. It's a tool to improve my work and it will get used a lot while the bling would be totally lost on me.
