I am either going to buy the Domke F-4AF or the F-6 for a walk around bag. I would like to carry my 40D with the 24-105 mounted. Also the sigma 10-20, the 50-f/1.4, and the 580EXII flash, along with CF cards and other assorted necessities. Which will work the best for my needs?

Thanks

I think I will prefer the F-6 ($67) as it's about the same size with the F-4AF ($115) but costs less. My opinion.

Do you have either? It would be great if you indicated what fits. That little difference in cost is not an issue. I would rather pay more for the right bag.

I have the F-6 little bit smaller bag. It's OK I suppose, for my 35mm film cameras/lenses. I have tried to fit my 40D w/ grip with a 50mm lens attached in the bag with all the dividers and it was a TIGHT fit.

The dividers it came with doesn't fit sigma lenses too well(sigma has some very WIDE lenses). I like my F2 bag more, it's bigger and doesn't feel like I'm squishing anything in it.

I have an f-6. It is really small and not much more than a small cooler shaped bag with a rather substandard insert (I have it but consider it a lens only bag and not the best one at that), ie Af lenses with reversed hood do not fit well. It would actually likely fit what you want to put in it with the flash going in the front pocket. I don't know about the f-4af but ....

Check out the F3X or even the F-5XC. I really think the F-3 would do it in a very well designed way but the F-5XC is more compact in it's design. I have both those (I know I have too many bags).

I am not familiar with the sigma lens but I am thinking it is no bigger than the 24-105 so take that into account.

I have both the F-4AF and F-6. For your setup I'd pick the F-6. 40D + 24-105L mounted can go lens-down into one of the lens compartments with the camera on top in the F-6. The other 2 lenses can go into 2 of the remaining 3 lens compartments, and the flash can go in the long compartment to the side. It's a very good fit.

While the F-4AF is taller I think it's actually too tall for a 40D + 24-105L. You can definitely fit it in there in the large compartment, but the lens gets no support that way, while in an F-6 the lens is cradled on all 4 sides. I think you could try putting the 40D + 24-105L sideways into the F-4AF's large compartment, but I'd think that would be too snug.

Hi, Doc...

F-4 is a great bag, but probably bigger than you would need for what you are carrying. I use it when one of the lenses is a 70-200 or 100-400 as it is deep enough to handle them easily (plus I have modified with a 'J' insert divider).

The F-6 is basically an F-2 without the side pockets. I, personally would miss these pockets.

For your consideration...for what you are carrying....I would look into and F-3 or an F-5c, both of which have been reviewed quite recently here.

I own all but the F-6

The F6 is also shallower by a couple of inches than the F2 is. If you're never going to want to carry your camera with a lens longer than the 24-105 mounted, it'll do. If you expect to attach something longer (physically; focal length is immaterial), go with the F3, F2, F4 or (for an ungripped body) the F-803. The F4 and F802 would be my recommendations for carrying up to the 70-200 2.8 IS mounted on your camera and vertical; the F2 will take that horizontally, but not with the stock insert. Both the F2 and F802 will benefit from the 720-230 3-compartment insert.
