Going to my first airshow with my 100-400mm this weekend and I am thinking of throwing my 1.4x TC on for a little extra length. I have shot airshows with a rented 100-400mm in the past and I know that it works great. Has anyone shot airshows with a 100-400 with a TC attached? If so, how does it work out?

Depending on your individual camera's focusing idiosyncrasies, you might have trouble with AF & have to use manual. Give it a try with traffic before the show & see if it will work.

The 1D series can focus at a min aperature of f/8 so the 1.4x should work fine. The 20-50D's can't focus at f/8.
I shot with a 1D MKIIn, 500mm f/4 & 2x TC at 1000mm f/8 and it works great. Now that's a lot of work to handhold.

My 30D deals with a 100-400 and a 1.4x with no problems whatsoever. But it does need the pin taping trick.

The 100-400 is great lens by itself, no way I would throw a 1.4 on it though. It's slow to begin with, and would be even slower, plus a huge loss in image quality. I owned one for 5 yrs, so I know about wanting more reach. That's why I have a 500 now. :)

I would second this. I have the 100-400 and love it...but...with a 1.4 on it drops significant IQ and focusing speed.

I've used the 1.4 on my 100-400 and the image quality is marginal. It needs the pin taping trick, but the AF is marginal and there is no way I'd use it at an air show. I've found the 100-400 to be plenty long enough for airshows and sometimes it's too long, even at 100mm.
The 500 is a great lens for airshows, especially if you want pictures of the pilot's nosehair...

Havent got any nose hairs yet but it does rock and give some great closeups.

I know a couple of people who use long lenses like that for air shows. The close ups are always excellent. I just don't know if I'd be able to hold something that heavy that steady... I have enough problems keeping the 100-400 on target.

Well, for this weekend's show I ended up using the 100-400 without the TC. I had it with me in case I needed/wanted it, just never tried it.
