View Full Version : Contemplating FF: Canon 7D in the works?

I'm giving serious thought to picking up a 5D Mark II, but have some concerns about Canon possibly introducing a new, lower end FF body that would still probably do what I need (e.g. feature-wise, between the 50D & 5D Mk II). I don't particularly need all of the fancy features of the Mark II, but the FF format & high-ISO performance are what's driving me towards the 5D Mark II.

Does anyone think there's room in Canon's line-up for such a body (e.g. something like a 7D in the maybe $1800-$2000 range)? Or would such a camera be too close to the Mark II and cannibalize sales?

When purchased as a kit, the 5D Mark II is about $2500, compared to the $1100 50D.
There appears to be room, at least in price, for a less expensive FF camera.

If you would have asked me a year ago, I would have said yes, especially since Canon had new CMOS factories planned.
However, today, I'm not so sure. I find it less probable that they'd introduce another FF body presently, when they seem to be somewhat limited with regards to their current CMOS production levels.

What features would they remove from the 5D MKII that could significantly impact the price? Keep in mind that the video is largely software based and not likely to significantly impact the price. ;)

you don't mention the fancy features the 5dmkII has that you don't need, so instead of waiting for a 7d, whu not go for a used 5dmkI? the old 5d dosnt have 21mp or HD video, but it does have awsome IQ and the same antique auto focus of the 5dmkII which canon shamelessly didn't upgrade.

in any case, it's pretty safe to assume that the vapourware 7d will be available in quantity to buyers way before the 'current' 5dmkII ;-)

I don't see it. The 5D is too popular a body, and most of the expense of a FF camera is the sensor itself. So there's not that much wiggle room left regarding price. I suspect Canon stripped down their FF offering as much as they possibly could and still offer a reasonably "professional" camera when they initially designed the 5D--I don't see a "Rebel" version as being likely or viable.

Then again, I didn't expect Canon to release the Rebel 500D for another six months, so what do I know?

Sorry for being a noob, but what's "awesome IQ?"

Is that to say you can't have both?

I would prefer an upgraded version of the classic 5D. the latest digic 4 processor, 14 bit processing, live view, Micro Adjust, am ok with 12 - 15 mega-pixels.

They already have two FF bodies, of which the 5D2 is supposed to service the lower end of the market. I doubt they would see a need for a third one.

Seriously? I heard that the keyboard was going to be too small and that email was doubtful because of some Outlook licensing issue.

I am getting tired of this comment! Especially because it is a complete fallacy.

Just because they didn't add more AF points, and because only the centre AF point is cross-type does not mean that they didn't upgrade the speed and accuracy of the the AF in the 5d Mark II!!!

Mini Keyboard will be an accessory via mini USB cable, and Email provided by Gmail and ThunderBird.

Wasn't the 5D mkII the rumored 7D?

These things are so circular.
Next you'll be asking for a 3D ;)

I'm with you on this one. Its almost like saying the 10 MP sensor in the 1dMKIII, 40D, and XTi is the same just because they're all "10MP".

Sweet! I was hoping for the mini USB so I can run this. (http://store.theonion.com/gotcha-gift-box-usb-toaster-p-71.html)
