A friend needed a new headshot for an upcoming audition. I was on my way out of town and the weather was awful (20+ mph winds) so we were forced to head inside our local library where these shots were taken. Lighting is a combination of reflected window light (32" silver reflector camera left) and some tungsten overhead.

Its not too bad. The blownout sections are quite distracting and the lighting is somewhat uneven on her face.

Cute shot.thought the gold was a tad over the norm? Lovely focus on the face though.nice!

I only did an angle crop because her head was at quite a tilt, it looked a tad off?

Very good pose and composition. The background isn't as distracting as it could be. A little crop would fix that.

The book "Light: Science and Magic" says that overhead lighting is a no no, if not balanced, due to the shadows it creates under the eyes, cheeks and chin. The shadow under the eye is making the depression under her eye more apparent and the shadow under her cheeks is depressing her mouth making it look sunken.

Try some classic portrait light setups, for example, turning her head towards to the window and lighting the left side with fill on the right giving you short lighting. Alternatively, use the window light as fill by reducing the exposure (balance for the outside) and then go for broad lighting with the flash.

Just some ideas :-)
