View Full Version : Fill flash advice needed

Suddenly, I've just drawn a blank. I can't recall how I shot outdoors in the sunlight with fill flash. It's been about a year.

Here's the senario: 5pm tomorrow afternoon on the baseball diamond, the local high school is retiring a couple of jerseys worn by pro players when they were in school.

I figured I'd need some fill flash to help eliminate shadows caused by the sun. Maybe so and maybe not.

Gear:
40D with 28-75 f/2.8
Sigma EF-500 DG Super
Canon OC-cord
Newton rotating flash bracket (brand new and untested)

I'm willing to listen to any advice y'all can dish out. I have a few hours to practice, just no subject to practice on! :-(

Thanks in advance
Mike

I think they are going to let me shoot the game afterwards.

Manual, TV mode or what?
I don't have a light meter, just have to go by the one in the camera.
Thanks

Mike,

Camera in manual mode. Flash in eTTL. I would avoid direct sun on the faces.

Thanks Bobbyz. Late afternoon on the diamond may be tough. I'll do the best I can. It's been a long time since I have used my flash for anything and I'm hoping I get it right.
Channelview High School grads Glen Wilson, class of 1977 and Chris Sampson class of 1996 (current Astro) are the two players.

Now if I can make this new Newton Di100FR2 flash bracket (http://www.newtoncamerabrackets.com/default-old.htm) work without making a fool of myself, I should be OK. Think I'll go outside and take pics of the neighbors cat! :-)

Mike

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I got my pics and most of them turned out OK.
Here's a couple. With several photogs shootin' away, it was difficult to get the subjects to look at me.

I wound up using a 17-40 on my 40D on manual with the flash on ettl at -1/3. I wish I had stuck with the 28-75. Several times I could have used the additional reach.

1) Chris Sampson waves to the crowd and says "Thank You"
2) Glen Wilson addressing the crowd.

Second one turned out awesome! Is that a panoramic composition or just your lens on 17 mm?

Looks like the cloudy day worked in your favor :-)

That was shot from the kneeling position at 17mm. I like it also.
