Sam, those shots make me want to find out if I can shoot my school's musical next week. I wasn't going to bother because I hadn't been asked but I might find out when the dress rehearsal is. Good composition for all of them, by the way.

I like #3, but #1 needs cropping and straightening IMHO.
I had to take #1 at a slightly odd angle because there is a post holding up the awning directly in front of the door the window is above. I'm just amazed the window is still in one piece.

Here's my tax for tonight. Maggie and I were just sitting around tonight reading, chatting and listening to Mary Chapin Carpenter and in a lull I decided my new toy needs some photographic loving!

After Maggie saw that shot she grabbed my salt and pepper shakers before laying claim to the G9 for her own shots. Here's my last one of the night.

Not for straight 2-track stuff that I use it for. (Looping, normalising, etc - still haven't found anything as good as Soundforge. Still using v7 :-)

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net). Platform compatible between windoesn't/Mac/Linux. Okay, It doesn't loop, but it does everything else. As many tracks as your hard-drive space allows. Recording time limited only by your hard-drive space. Recordings are made as 32 bit float.

Give it a try.

I've got a Dell XPS Studio 16 on the way - shipped but not in the country yet, according to the status page.

One of the things I find so cute with Americans (gross generalisation) is the way they have NO idea with sarcasm, it doesn't work with them at ALL. If it doesn't have a big flashing sign saying "laugh now!" it bypasses them completely...

I refer to the end of this thread - http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/775049/0 - but even a quick read of it is interesting...

What do you mean "right", anyway? Are you getting overexposure due to a too-slow shutter speed? How's your exposure compensation if so? If the photos are decently exposed it's not a too-slow shutter speed. What's your ISO set to for those modes? If you have the ISO set to 100 or such and there isn't much light around - e.g. indoors - it's not going to be picking high shutter speeds anyway...

Another couple of shots from the Coonabarabran trip. We crossed stacks of rivers and creeks on the trip and saw no other bridges this interesting. Unusual to see a bridge so ornate in the middle of nowhere. This crosses the Castlereagh River at Mendooran.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3073/3558364918_f25cd9f721_b.jpg

Right across the river in someones yard, there was an old "red rattler" suburban railway carriage from the heyday of Sydneys rail transport. Yet another thing you don't expect to see in the middle of nowhere. Excuse the slight out of focus look, I was leaning against the bullbar of the Hi-Lux and the wind was blowing like a bastard so lots of camera shake so no critique on this one.

Well my receiver broke again today, (cheap ebay one). This one: http://www.alexhophotography.com/blog/images/stories/v2.bmp the bottom bit broke off, and also now it will only fire when the back battery pretector is off. If i put the cover on.. it doesn't work. I don't know how, or why but that's what it does. Probably going to look for another 580 and use wireless for now.. and wait until i can afford the new pocket wizards..

Richard, for when you read it: I see that you were one of the 6 people at Etihad for the North/Freo game :p Your shots are good, I think some could do with a bit more of a crop though, considering they're only used for web.

I'm thinking I will try taking my 1D/70-200 there for Origin in a few weeks. Just have to think of the best way because I only have a backpack for my gear. I want a shoulder bag but the one I'd want (7 or 8MDH) are nearly $200 over here IIRC. Anyone got any good but cheaper alternatives, similar to the 7/8MDH that I can fit most of my gear (see gear list) in? Or even if there's a cheap shoulder bag from somewhere that I can buy and then turn into a camera bag?

Edit: I bought my non-IS for that price in January and the place I got it from (d-d-photographics.com.au) has it for $1900 now, as well as the IS version for $2300, down from $2700.

Seeing the sandbags made me wonder. If so, I think the long exposure and softening of the water kind of takes something away from it. If not, disregard my comment ;)

Sometimes the terminals on the battery don't make contact with the terminals in the receiver when the lid is on due to them being a stupid shape. I just chucked a bit of solder on there to make the contact point larger and they work fine now ;)

Mine did that, so I grabbed a double AA battery pack from an old children's toy and soldered the wires to the terminals in the receiver, whacked some sticky velcro on both parts and it was all fixed, with the added bonus of being able to use AA's instead of those damn 3V lithium cells.

No, 'twas the beach. The sandbags are to stop erosion. The sea was high, but wouldn't have benefited from a wide-angle shot anyway, however there was no way I was changing lenses on the beach with all that sea spray and sand blowing all over the place.

tupper
24th of May 2009 (Sun), 06:26
Well, I managed to get the firing problem correct by bending one of the battery holders inward, the connection wasn't quite right before maybe. Also fixed the broken bit at the bottom, i think its probably stronger than before now!

And report to fair-trading if undue pressure was used, or if it was deliberately confusing. Might not help in this case, but builds a profile for the company.

Ok lads (and ladies), my phone has carked it (internal memory gone bad), so for the first time in 5-6 years or so, I'm up for a new one.

What's good on today's market ? The Mrs has said we can't afford an iPhone (bugger!), so it's gotta be cheaper than that. I need it to be responsive (not waiting 3 mins for the damn thing to start up), and I don't want keys so small that you need a toothpick to press them.

I'd also like something that will talk to my Mac for the purpose of syncing contacts.

My fiancée is in phone sales... I'll ask her what's good.

My iPhone costs me the same as my old Nokia... ~50-60/mo. You can get 'em cheaper, too. I get unlimited free calls and texts to Liz and my family to boot.

Well we're on a no-monthly-payment plan, just pay for calls we make, so the bill rarely exceeds $10 for the pair of us.

I'd be looking at buying the phone outright rather than on a plan.

Already told her to get onto consumer affairs and tell them everthing.
Did have a call from her today, her mum was out and she told me she'd been given two figures for this as a bulk deal of $3500 and $10,000.(for what that includes I have no idea)
I near had a heart attack then she says that she was told that she might be able to buy prints at $200 each if the above was out of her means.
Was also asked not to say a thing to her mum,as she would .."have a hissy fit.."to say the least.
Anyway upshot is I told her to go to consumer affairs,if I get the chance will try to find out about how much pressure was put on her to sign this deal that was a ,enter and win type of thing. Don't know if this is allowed but if you put a .com.au after the name in first post.

Man, I got a couple of 1TB drives back from WD - replaced under warranty as they both refused to show as any more than 31MB.

Dropped one into my desktop system - unplugged all the other drives and booted off the W7 DVD, but got told the drive couldn't be formatted. Rebooted, it was fine, installed W7, rebooted, drive error, can't use, etc.

Gave up and went back to the VIsta install by plugging those drives back in, but this is really frustrating.

Any ideas? (Haven't tried the other one.)

Yeah, because the 1TB is sitting next to the case, unplugged and unloved. I've got a 1TB drive in the machine, which is my primary data and photo drive, and it's behaving fine.

This is strange. Tomorrow I'll plug the other one in and see what happens. (Just plug it in as an extra drive, not as a primary (OS) drive.)

IANAL (nor do I play one on TV) and I haven't read anything she may have signed, so I wouldn't want to guess whether there'd be any kind of comeback if she didn't pay.

I'd hold off paying for as long as possible, while I got some proper advice from someone appropriately qualified before making that decision. If things are legally watertight from the "photographer's" end, you may get yourself in hot water if you refuse payment, no matter how morally wrong their practices are.

Good luck and let us know how it ends up.
