Well here's a very quick portrait I took this evening (handheld, but with a flash) - click through for the full size version.
1/200th, f/5.6, iso 1600
Full size version quite amazing - actually seeing the flash in the eyes and parts of the room reflected in them.

Alright, I need two more ideas for what I'm doing for school. I'm popping/throwing/dropping water balloons and shooting them at the same time. Anyone got any ideas for interesting photos of it? I've got 13 ideas so far, most of them are different to the next, so if anyone can think of something unique I might just use it.

Nope, no IS. It's the only current Canon Super-Tele that doesn't. Bit of a bugger, but well at f/5.6 it's a bright sunlight lens anyway, and for birding it'll likely be on a tripod as that involves a lot of sitting around pretending not to be a person anyway.

Generally just on the ground, but am considering the folded chair and camo net route, as some guys I know get awesome results that way.
When I got to use a mate's 600/4 (non-IS), I stood rather than sat, as the tripod was set to standing height and I didn't feel the need to change that. Managed to snap this willy wagtail.

Yeah prime :)
I've used the 100-400 on several occasions and found
a) I mostly shot at 400mm
b) it really wasn't as sharp as I wanted
c) the IS on that lens is fairly crappy and not that worth it

From a listening sense, I really think you appreciate it more when you put on a record. Because you have to flip it / change records when tracks end you actually make the decision to listen. Unlike when people just have the radio going all day long, or a bunch of tracks through an mp3 all day long.
As for quality, well, I think that comes down to personal preference.

Look at me, I have an iPhone :p I personally don't mind MP3 quality from my iPod at the right volume and I haven't properly listened to a CD in so long that I can't distinguish between the two. My mum has a record player but she never uses it so I haven't heard one in a long time. And I have playlists of bands that I feel like listening to and then I put that on random. Don't mind my method one bit :)

Try juggling the indecision when you get home and stand infront of your music collection for a good 10 minutes because you either cant pick what to play or what to play it on (vinyl or CD).
Records arent the best choice when you are studying though, too much getting up to change sides, records, lift the stylus at the end of a record etc. Even worse when you decide to listen to some 45s :rolleyes:

Why do they have to be so expensive though!
Us norms that don't have work provide them with it just can't justify buying one when you can buy a nice 580ex or that Canon 15mm Fisheye I have been eyeing..

I think my school bought and pays for iPhone's for the principal and other higher ups as well. I was hoping to get an iPhone late last year but didn't because of the handset repayments and when I thought I was going to get one, I didn't think I'd jailbreak it but it didn't matter in the end. My mum has a touch and she hasn't and probably won't jailbreak that. The new firmware does seem to make it more of a complete product.
Edit: If my current contract is only 12 months then it should run out in about August, so I might get the iPhone when I'm due to sign up again. It might be 24 months though, which would be disappointing.

That's pretty good, here in Indo it's too expensive as only one company has rights to it. So everyone that is buying them is getting them in Singapore outright for about $850.. how does that compare?

Just wish 3 was allowed to sell the iphone...
Failing that, an unlocked one and one of 3s special iphone plans would do. $49 per month for $300 and something worth of calls to other networks, $290 worth of calls and texts to other 3 users and 1gb of data.
Not that I need another mp3 player, quite happy with the 120gb classic ive got.

I think Optus' $49 cap plan had it for free for May only so I can imagine a lot of people would have jumped on that. I'm on the Optus $49 cap plan and it works really well for me. I wish they'd put a little bit of data in for free like the iPhone $49 cap but you can't win with everything.

50mb? That's not much. The Optus $49 iPhone cap plan has $300 of included calls & text plus 250mb of data. And it turns out they've now got a deal to go to a $59 cap for a free iPhone. It was the $49 cap a few weeks ago so now they're pretty much still gaining the handset repayments.

Nah, this was the orginal Technics design. It became an industry standard in the Club world. I'd say most brands are now trying to copy the look. (Even though it's not the look that made it the standard).

Hey everyone, just chiming in to say I'm still kicking. Uni has been keeping me very busy lately.
Sooo.. I turned 20 today. :D
That means that last night was my final night at cadets. It was quite an awesome night, that ended with my Commanding Officer yanking me up in front of everyone to present some certificates, talk about my time in cadets, etc. Then after that, all of my section (around 24 cadets) cornered me to sing happy birthday and give some gifts. One of the things I got was a real (disposable?) film camera, that everyone had signed.
I've got to run to a lecture (yay maths :p), but I'll have some pictures up later, and some more general photo-tax stuff as well.

Sounds awesome, good stuff :-)

Tell me about it. Got a 600gb drive that I had been using as a backup/dump drive under vista that osx wont write to. Cant be bothered copying it all back off and reformatting the drive though.
Gah, I've been using NTFS-3G but I've found it to be soooo slow. Can't complain too much... free.
You don't really want them, you just think you want them. Apple knows best, baby!
(Dell XPS Studio 16 arrived yesterday, MBP for sale :-)
So jumping onto the Windows wagon now? Was your MBP your first mac? How have you been finding the Studio 16?
Nah, I definitely want them. Pity though, some of these small little nit bits make me want to get a normal laptop. In fact, I think I've been using boot camp more then OSX.
Do you have Paragon NTFS+ for Mac? Best tool ever.
Nope I don't, thanks for the heads up though. Sounds like it is what I really need; performance. Cheers ;)

Nah, just heading home.
I used a mac when I was doing some design stuff at the ATO in the early 90s - does that count? :-)
As for the XPS - it rocks. Screen is seriously overstaturated at the moment, no doubt just them showing it off, but man, it's crisp, and the colours are awesome.
Typing on it is terrific, it's very fast with 8GB RAM (double this desktop!) and the SSD.
Mmmm, love it. (Apart from the piano black finish - fingerprint heaven.)

Nice! After having a taste of the 1D classic, I'd LOVE a 1D2 (or even better, a 1D3 :p) because then I can use it for everything rather than just some things. For example, I used my 1D for the first two hours of a shoot at school today (portraits of other students doing their work and things like that) and I just didn't feel that I was getting any really good results at all. So for the second two hours I used my 400D and I felt so much better.

I've always known the 1D, being so old, has a problem with the hotshoe. I've cleaned it out and tightened the screws but for whatever reason, it's never working consistently. I guess it was just a lack of confidence as well because I was pretty much a second shooter to a teacher/photographer and he knew what he was doing while I hadn't really done any portraiture at all, especially with flash.

Okay, here's (http://picasaweb.google.com/hairbysubaru/Summernats#5153884369280739234) the tax for my question.
Back in my youth I progressed from a practika (+50-180 onetouch) to an AE1+programme (with a zillion lenses - the 600mm reflecting was awesome, even if it did require a toothpick stuck into just the right spot to obtain uniform focus). Having had that kit stolen, I regressed. I played with video for a while, but it didn't work for me.
Fast-forward ten years. I reluctantly admit that this digital thing isn't just a fad and I invest in a fuji s5000. Push button zoom and 1/4 second shutter-lag. I can pull something like this (http://picasaweb.google.com/hairbysubaru/Detour2005#5056598735436158802) off. I fork out for an s5500. same sh!t but 1/10th second shutter lag. This gives me a little headroom (http://picasaweb.google.com/hairbysubaru/EasterShow2007#5056205209057661730).
January last year, a mate virtually frog-marches me into a dealer and makes me buy (not that I put up much resistance) the 400D + twin-lense kit, with which I took the tax at the start of the post. At first, I was one very happy pitcher-taker. The body was a step ahead. 1/10th cold-boot (even from standby), virtually no shutter-lag, zoom as fast as I could twist it. What's not to love?
There's this thing called sunset. This means put the long lense away and pull out the 18-55. No more of these (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/nza-VUkslPZbf3Y72JICJg?feat=directlink) (not that it's anything to write home about). Twelve months on, I lash out on the tamron listed below (when my gear list extends beyond two items, I'll move it to the appropriate place). Yeah the pictures are better, but I don't like them as much. So. I lash out on a 50D body (My wish-list and my bank account said that I was go for a 5D, but when I realised that I was looking at a $6000 (body and lense) spend to match what I already had reach-wise with the existing combo, I settled for the 50D).
All of a sudden, my keep-rate has dropped by about 50%. With the 400, I had a pretty good idea of the modes available and the flexibility of the body. I expected that the 50D would be better. It is better. Better at showing just what a crap photographer I am.
This (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/vSo_jhoMxdFHAnrfXqX05Q?feat=directlink) for example.
This is like video games right? the better equipment you can afford, the harder it is to use?
Don't get me wrong, you will have to kill me to take my 50D away from me.
Edit:Oh yes. What am I doing wrong (that was the point)?

Except a well-mastered CD on a good system.
It's like digital vs analog, good CD vs good vinyl on good sound system sounds good no matter what, maybe you might tell the vinyl is slightly better....
However CDs in general are more compressed than vinyl (making it "louder" to the average consumer....), which obviously reduces the quality a bit, but if you aren't listening to this on a *proper* sound system it is unlikely you will tell the difference....
Like digital vs analog, it really comes down to convenience/personal choice....
There's an outlet in Brisbane too.
Well here's a very quick portrait I took this evening (handheld, but with a flash) - click through for the full size version.

Not really 100% on what you're after. However, the step up from the 400D to 50D shouldn't be too drastic.
If you have the same settings with the same lenses you'll generally get very similar pictures on different cameras.
As for doing something wrong. I think you're just having a lapse in your composition. The last picture doesn't really have any interest. The light (obviously from the sun) isn't that interesting, you have a green car with green grass and a wooden fence. It's all pretty bland.
I think getting some better lenses will give you a better image quality. You're much better off getting nicer lenses that spending money on the body.
Also read up some composition books. This will give you some ideas about how to make your shots not only exposed properly but interesting to look at too.
just my $0.02, hope it helps.

The best thing you can think about when you buy a new car is: It's just a piece of metal.
My car had a whole lot of damage done to it by some drunk idiot. Kicked in 3 panels. Basically had three panel sized dents. I got ****ty, but calmed down very quickly. I'm not stressing out over metal. I'm not stressing out over money either. It's insured for a reason. When I get them repaired, AAMI can slug me with a couple of hundred if they want. It's still cheaper than getting it done myself or putting in the man hours to do it.

We bought an 18-month-old Magna a couple of years ago, because it had already depreciated about 50% and you couldn't beat that with a stick.
Other than that, they'd all been about 7-8+ years old when we got 'em.

Yeah Magnas are good cars but they don't hold their value. Mine sold for $38k new in 2000, I bought it for just under $14k in 2005.

Yeah, ours was $32K in mid-2005, half that in dec 2006. Apart from its ENORMOUS turning circle, and the fact that it's SO DAMN BIG, it's terrific. (Ours is on gas, which helps.)

At your age the insurance excess will sting too (and next years rise in premiums).
18 years old - ten feet tall and bulletproof. Its a wonderful age but I wonder how I survived.

I work across the rd from where I live now. Filling up once a month is great. Having no money due to paying the bank back has become a little tedious though. Glad it's all over next year.

Hi all,
Does anyone know where you can still buy Canon 5D bodies (originals) in Australia, and what they go for? Also, if there are any 2nd hand copies floating around, let me know. I have a friend who is after one.
Also, does anyone have a Canon 24-70 that they want to sell in the near future?

I can't imagine anyone selling it new anymore. It's not worth even buying it new, IMO. Unless, for some reason, they had it at less than $2000.

Peace of mind, warranty....I'd pay 15-20% extra for a new body over an older, unknown one.

Yeah, but that's why I said $2000. I know people who bought used 5D's for about $1800 last year and then the prices went down a bit but now they're back around the same because the 5D2's out and people know the prices of it. I probably would pay about $2200 if I was in that position (new vs used).

Ouch! Just read back a bit, good thing you had a new car Angus, old ones don't have crumple zones - like my '85 corolla. But at least they don't bend when they hit small stuff!

Are you looking at becoming a professional photographer or staying a hobbyist? I own a 400D with the dual kit lenses plus a natty 85mm f1.8 lens and I'm a hobbyist, so taking hundreds of photos and being happy with at least 5% of them would seem pretty normal to me.
I think that, at the end of the day, it all comes down to practice and learning from all the images you have to dispose of. I would certainly steer clear of getting too bogged down in comparisons of the quality of your stuff to what you may see posted on this forum as you will find a huge range of experience and artistic ability here.
Lenses and composition seem to be the key to success, depending on what you are specialising in, bodies seem to be secondary to the whole process. Also, every photographer seems to be their own harshest critic.

Was good to meet up with Josh (Hey Boucher!) today after a night on the town ($2 Drinks FTW!!!) to drown my sorrows after crashing my car in Queanbeyan (Pics to follow a little later tonight) In short the front bumper of my VW Golf needs replacing, as does the front drivers side panel, tyre and posibly part of the wheel arch and water tank... Bloody traffic signs jumping in front of cars!!
Ahh Angus, are you one of these "P" platers that we are constantly warned about?
Oh, did you know that road signs are concreted into the ground?

For a lot of things, lighting is definitely the key to a good photo. I shot indoors yesterday using mostly f/2.8 but it wasn't enough and I had nothing but a bare 430EX II, no bounce card or diffuser or anything, and I struggled to get the right results. The best shots I had were the ones taken when we had massive windows shooting light from the side of the room. All I needed then was a bit of fill on the other side and I was good to go. Controlling your lighting and understanding what you can/should do to get the results you want is very important.
To be honest, that's probably one thing where I'm lacking. I used to always try to shoot with as much natural light as possible but after a bit of bounce flash in controlled situations, I realised how much it affects what I end up with.

In all honesty, I hate taking photos indoors. I'm always either too over exposed or too underexposed. I tend to find shooting outdoors to be easier since, generally, there is a little more consistency when it comes to natural light at 90% of the angles used when photographing things.
