Oh, did you know that road signs are concreted into the ground?

Hmm, you haven't been in St Marys in the last few days have you? The Mitchell Street sign was uprooted as I walked to the shops this morning...

In all honesty, I hate taking photos indoors. I'm always either too over exposed or too underexposed. I tend to find shooting outdoors to be easier since, generally, there is a little more consistency when it comes to natural light at 90% of the angles used when photographing things.
I feel the same way :D I love natural light. I know I just said controlling light is the key for some kinds of photography but I love having no real control over the light and using it to my advantage as much as I can.

Oh, and I've just been looking through shots that people have taken with the 5D + 50/1.4 combo. Somebody give me some money that they don't need anymore! :(

Hi guys my search for 5D2 batteries is finally over!!!!!!! (LP-E6)

JB HiFi in Melbourne has them for $77! I picked an extra one today

I can't believe the other stores, not only are they out of stock, but the few that do have it are price gouging at $100+

Clarence congrats on the new toys

PS.. given an n x n matrix M over F, anyone know how to prove that the Annihilator of F^n (a F[x]-module over F, where F is any field) is equal to c(x)F[x], where c(x) is the characteristic polynomial of M? I've been stuck on this crap-arse question all day. It's given that the eigenvalues are distinct.

Ok here is the pics. The pole was originaly standing just right of frame, it fell forward but i moved it off the roadway, car is back a bit from the collision simply since instant reaction was to reverse back a little and get off the median strip (Due to a flat tyre that wasnt possible)

Ok, Going up to a round about slightly too fast but not over the speed limit. There is a car coming towards me in his lane all ok, both of us appear to be heading stright on, he speeds up and tries to go infront of me to turn right (crossing my path) i hit the breaks, skid on loose gravel and hit a pole and the curb. No idea who the other driver was and since i didnt get any details of his car he may as well not have existed according to insurance.

Parents arent as annoyed as i expected. Dad simply said "You are doing better then i did, i crashed my first car 2 weeks into having my license" The fact they are on the other side of the world helps a bit.... nice having a buffer zone :p

I've crashed on a roundabout too. Infact, the Av one (right around the bends). Old granny didn't give way and crashed to my side. Damage wasn't hard on me, since I was in a Pajero and she was in a little Corolla. Her excuse was "I didn't see him"..

Went to a vintage Speedway meet last night. Took the 1D and 150-500 lens. BIG MISTAKE. Lens was too loong and way too slow. Ended up shooting at ISO3200. Ugly, ugly, ugly results.

Fortunately it was vintage stuff so B&W conversion sort of saved them.

Weekend tax from me. Had to take some more photos for my dad, so I thought I'd just get a quick snap of the kid brother too. Was also playing around with the gels. I learnt that you need a little more space than I had to work with to get a proper separation of colour/light.

Next time I'll find a wall with more space in front of it.

The first is (almost!!) enough to inspire me to get up early one of these mornings and head down to my local beach for the sunrise.

No tax from the weekend for me :( Disappointing, to be honest, because I'd hoped to get out and shoot something but it didn't eventuate.

This might sound like a stupid question but umbrellas to bounce flashes into... are they just umbrellas or is their a specific kind of umbrella that most photographers use? Are they called umbrellas because of the style/form or are they just normal umbrellas?

Edit: Obviously some are different because I've seen silver reflectors in the form of umbrellas, so I guess I'm really just wondering how well a normal umbrella would actually work? :p

Yeah I don't do dawn that often as it's a big effort to drag myself out of bed on a normal weekday, let alone a couple of hours earlier on a weekend!

As for the fish, it's demise is purely due to the hunting prowess of the osprey, but the photo is half luck as I was carefully picking my way over slippery rocks going towards the area they were hunting in when I glanced up and saw him coming at me with a fish in his claws, swung the camera up and snapped away.

Well unless your normal umbrella is either all white, or has a silver inside, it's not going to work too well. You also have the wee problem of mounting it with that handle on the end.

Yeah, colourspace is the culprit in 99% of these cases.

400D = SRGB
Adobe = SRGB IEC61966-2.1

I did just notice a bit further down it says:
RGB: Preserve embedded profiles.

Should I change that?

you shouldn't need to change those settings.

Spent all morning copying important files and applications too external harddrive.. taking iMac in for replacement with the burnt screen problem.

They should just give me a new one because its a problem that apple is aware of and is replacing, I have been told i have to give it too them for 5 working days for them to 'evaluate' it. Then it can take up to 7 working days to get a replacement if in fact they find out its the problem (which I already know it is..).

Ah crap, if you were in perth I would tell you to go to PRA, in my experience most of the big apple "authorised" repairers will be like that to you, not even look at it for 3 weeks (in my case), then when they do tell you it will cost you a lot to fix because it went out of warrenty while they were 'waiting' to look at it!

I dunno how much that applies to modern LCDs though... I know with CRTs that was a big problem, but good modern LCDs I don't think it is much anymore....

BTW anyone know of a better file hosting thingo than filesavr?

For the time lapse experts here.

What is the best way to get a successful time-lapse of a sunset?

My plan was to have a time-lapse of a bench at the beach with people sitting down on it, while the sunset is going. (back view of the bench so they are as a silhouette)

Would i need to change settings to keep the exposure consistent?
what is the best way to set this up using my DSLR?

any help would be appreciated :)

AFAIK you should keep everything the same, I think varying it might be way too hard for the first go at it...
That said, shoot sRAW and maybe you can stuff around with it in the computer if it looks crap with a consistent exposure...
I wouldn't shoot full res unless you want to crop as anything higher res than 1080p isn't much use for video ATM...
A timer remote is your best bet for doing this, figure out how long you want the final video to be, and how many FPS, then you can figure out the number of frames required, then figure out how long what you are actually shooting goes for, and how many seconds should be between shots. Set that on the timer, expose so that your camera can do that timing, then start it and wait... if you don't have the timer then there should be some software somewhere to do the same on a laptop....

Bought a new one, the logic board was buggered, still works, just crashes and graphics stuff up badly if you do anything intensive (photo editing) on it....

I think the thing was they took all the details (and non refundable booking fee!) first, then gave me the computer, rang me up after warranty expired, told me prognosis a week later.... Probably should have fought it, when my charger caught fire I had to fight for a new one (well within warranty!), but I did get it because I fought it (and was a bit shaken by the fact that the charger caught fire while I was luckily home....)

Buffer is larger, on some cameras the FPS rate slows down with RAW but the main fact is that they're already processed as JPEG's. This means they can be sent through to an editor immediately without any batch processing. Just look through, crop, tag/keywording, save and upload. Any of the 1D bodies are JPEG machines so no one has any problem shooting JPEG unless they've not tried and tested the settings.

Which I haven't yet on my 1D

Ick. There's no way I'd try to sell anything straight out of my camera. I'd do the same processing regardless of whether I was shooting JPG or RAW. "just look through, crop, tag/keywording, save and upload" is half the process already anyway - just throw in a little exposure, colour temp, curves. I don't think you're saving much.

You'd be surprised. When the camera is set up properly and right, you won't need to do anything. When I shot from the sidelines at a Melbourne Storm trial match there was another photographer shooting with a D3. He uploaded some photos at half time and I was watching him. They were outstanding. After he chose a couple that mattered, he got out the team sheet and started keywording. RAW would have meant he had to import then click a preset button, let it export then upload. It sounds bad but when you're a pro sports photographer (or anything else with deadlines), you find a way to make it work.

Even then, all your master copies are in a lossy format. Everytime you crop, adjust, save, upload, keyword, or anything else, you lose a little bit more detail.

I still don't see how what he did would have been any harder if it was RAW. He still had to move files from camera to laptop, still had to edit (keyword) and still had to move/export those files to wherever.

I remember this kind of dilema - my mother bought me a car stereo and seat covers when I bought my first car and DEMANDED that I remove them when I sold the car despite the fact that I had no radio to put in place or that the seat covers wouldn't fit anything else besides the 1972 Morris Marina they had been bought for. Okay, not a camera but the concept is the same.

Haha yeah, I know what you mean. In that case, I would have given her a bit of the money that the sale made, if she wanted it. But in the case of selling a camera, I wouldn't give back any money because it would still effectively be my parents paying for the camera. Just because I'd sold it it doesn't mean it's not money I'm keeping for myself, if that makes sense.

It's a tool for a job just like a philips head screwdriver.

I have screwdrivers that I have sentimental attachments to too!

The "it's just a tool" philosophy may apply for pros, but to many hobbyists (myself included) the gear itself has sentimental value as well. My 400D sure does, for several different reasons, and it's not going anywhere.

The funny thing is, if we'd stayed together she could have inherited it when I upgraded, and saved herself $2k.

If I had the money then I'd keep the 400D rather than sell it. But when I go to upgrade, it's most likely going to go to help me get to my next target. To be honest I'll probably sell both the 400D and the 1D to get some cash to end up with a 1D2 or something. Not that either will grab that much money when I'm ready to sell them.

My 1Ds2 broke during a shoot today.

Luckily I had another camera handy (don't always during e-shoots) and life went on, but I'm pretty annoyed ... it's barely done any work since I got it back from Canon :(

I guess I just don't have a huge emotional attachment to things then. I spent so much time and effort into my current car and my last one (here (http://www.tangcla.com/car.html) and here (http://www.tangcla.com/car.html2)) but would have no problems selling them for a good price.

In what way did it break? Shutter? Electrics? Hope it gets worked out quickly. Disappointing for that to happen straight after it's back from Canon, I can imagine.
