I have screwdrivers that I have sentimental attachments to too!

The "it's just a tool" philosophy may apply for pros, but to many hobbyists (myself included) the gear itself has sentimental value as well. My 400D sure does, for several different reasons, and it's not going anywhere.

The funny thing is, if we'd stayed together she could have inherited it when I upgraded, and saved herself $2k.

I don't know if it's sentimental value, but I still have my two old digital cameras that I don't use anymore. My Kodak DX3600 actually doesn't work anymore for some reason and I can't even bring myself to bin it. It's a weird thing for me - I could quite easily sell my car tomorrow but I am reluctant to get rid of my small gadets.

White horizontal line appearing in shots (glad I picked it up straightaway) and then it Err 99'd. The Err has gone, horizontal line remains. I'm guessing the shutter is cactus (tho it looks fine as far as I can tell).

ofdphoto

Just did some more tests. The line is far more pronounced at higher shutter speeds, so it's looking more and more like a faulty shutter. Now to try and find a way of getting it fixed quickly ... :(

Gives you an idea of your market value :-)

My 1Ds2 broke during a shoot today.

Luckily I had another camera handy (don't always during e-shoots) and life went on, but I'm pretty annoyed ... it's barely done any work since I got it back from Canon :(

Yeah, very frustrating, that sort of thing.

If I had the money then I'd keep the 400D rather than sell it.

Well, I figure it's not worth much anyway now, so I might as well keep it.

so, canon tell me it's probably the shutter, and that it will probably cost $800+ to repair.

since it's done less than 2000 shots since they saw it for an unrelated problem, i'm going to be insisting that they broke it during the last service and should repair it for free. especially since it only has 67k shots on the shutter.

grrrr.

I'd say you have a strong case, Luke. Hope it works out for you.

I finished at lunch today and took my 1D + nifty 50 to school hoping to get it out on the walk through to the station... of course it starts raining as soon as I get out of school! Didn't bring it out because the nifty wouldn't have lasted

The better question is: "Will my software create RSS feeds?"+ 1 The alternative - creating them manually - is a serious chore.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/rssfeedcreator/ may or may not be helpful, I have no need of such things as I do not have a life (I have a job that precludes such a thing), hence I have not tried it out. My experience of sourceforge projects is that although they usually do, they might not work. None have damaged my machine(s) in any way.

I didn't think it was out till next week or something. That's what I seemed to gather from the thread in the other part of POTN. But then again, I didn't take note of any dates. Good to know it works well though. I wonder how long it'll be until Canon (or Nikon, if they advance quite quickly) develop proper AF for video.

General query regarding filters - if you have a few lenses (lets say 3 +) and you intend purchasing a filter (for instance a neutral density filter) do you buy the same filter for each of your lenses or do you buy different filters for each lens depending on what you think you may use each lens for?

I don't have a real collection of filters, I have a UV filter for each lens and a CP that goes on whichever lens needs it at the time. Thankfully, all my current lenses are 77mm, so I can swap filters between them.
(I still technically own the 70-200 f4/L in my sig, which is a different size, but it's out on loan, so I regard my lens "collection" as the other ones listed)

Well generally, for specialist filters, you buy one in the size of the thread on the lens with the biggest diameter, and some step-up rings for the other lenses (assuming they're not all the same filter size).

Hi All.
This question probably gets asked once a month..and now it's my turn. :p

For those who know their bags, would the Crumpler $7MDH hold:
1dMkII, 70-200 f2.8L, 28-70 f2.8L, Sigma 10-22, associated hoods, filters and even a 430EX ? I used to carry the 400D and the 2 L's in a $6MDH, with the 28-70 mounted, but the 1D is a bit too big, so it's time to think about another bag, so I might as well get one that'll hold the Sigma too.

S7000
2nd of June 2009 (Tue), 21:03
I can fit my 1N with the 24-70 mounted, 10-22, 100mm macro, 70-200 standing and a flash down the side. Filters in the pocket. It's a pretty tight fit though.

Yeap. There's a specific fella called the focus puller and all he does is set the focus for fixed shots or focus while the camera is tracking/panning. I got mine from Fotodiox I think.

C/Y -> EOS works fine on my Zeiss lens on both crop and FF.

If you are ordering, just be careful that the super dodge ones may not give you infinity focus.

In hindsight, I should've bought mine from elsewhere where it would've been cheaper and with AF conf.

Damn, i have a film SLR Yashica that would love to wear that.

Where did you findy??

Good old Ebay.

What's the deal with AF confirm?

Problem with the ones on Ebay is some say they work, other's dont. Apparently they don't work on APS-C sensors because of the construction?

In other news, I sold the 100mm f/2.8 macro. :) least that'll help cover the cost of the 85L!

Will have an 85mm f/1.8 for sale soon, with hood, in box... maybe... ;)

I have the one in my signature, but I think this one is suffice.

AF confirmation lets you know that your focus is in focus I suppose due to lack of split prism screen assist etc. I have AF assist on the Pentax-A lens I got the other day :)

Hey guys,
I'm somewhat in the market for a light stand and thought if you could recommend any and a place to purchase them. I've so far checked out the nano lightstand at ImageMelbourne but I'm not sure if they are reliable. Nothing too expensive because I am yet to splurge on some radio triggers which are also another dilemma. *sigh*
TIA :)

I must say, I'm pretty darned impressed with the sharpness of this 400/5.6L.

Here's a shot of a male Osprey I took last weekend with the 400/5.6L + Canon 1.4x TC + Kenko 2x TC (total focal length 1120mm) and it's still sharp!

Yeah something like that, although the camera only ever recognises one TC in a stack so the exif says it's 560mm (i.e. 400 + 1.4x) and the Kenko 2x seems to have confused it more than a Canon brand one, as it claims it was f/9 (not f/8 as it would be with the 1.4x alone, or f/11 with the 2x alone, or the actual f/16 that it was with it stacked).

Not actively wanting to sell mine, just rarely use it. But when I do use it the results are brilliant. Lack of opportunity not a dislike for the lens. 24-70/2.8L is my usual lens on the 5D so almost always not worth changing it for the prime.

Really dont need another lens but Im waiting for a reply on that 35-350L.......

I want, want, want, want a 24-70/2.8L but there's no way I'm going to be getting one any time soon, that's why I'm just looking for better lenses to use while I wait for one. At the moment the 24/2.8 is a good little wider lens and I always wish I had the zoom when I'm using it. Not that I don't like primes either. I can see myself having the 50/1.4 and using it when I have a 24-70 but yeah, both a while away.

I want a 1D2 as well. I've had the taste of the 1-series with the classic and every time I use it I just wish it was a 1D2 or 1D2n so that I could use it for everything knowing it's a great all round camera whereas the 1D classic is a bit iffy with some things.

Lens lust sux dont it

My 12-24 Sigma rarely gets used but I wouldnt sell it. Sometimes a scene demands wide and its a beauty on the FF 5D.
On the other hand I have no idea why I bought the Sigma 150/2.8 macro - a hugely well regarded lens that I just havent had the opportunity/need to use.

I go to Lake Ginninderra college. We have an awesome ODE program here. Most of the trips are really cheap as well because the school has most of the gear. The trips I am doing this year are:

Canyoning - blue mountains

Climbing - Mt. Arapiles
Snowboarding - perisher
Snowcamping - perisher
Cross country skiing - perisher

Looks like a cool list, we did lots of day trips to local climbing/canyoning/walking spots, plus longer ones to Nowra, the snowies, a big one to Arapilies, Tassie, and Nadgee.

Do them all now, as it doesn't get any cheaper! Plus it's fantastic having all the gear provided, gives you a chance to decide if you like that sport or not. Enjoy the Nullabor trip, I've never been, but friends have raved. The drive will be worth it, just bring decent music and lots of packs of cards.

The only thing I'd be worried about with getting the 28-70 is if 28 is wide enough. 24 is barely wide enough as it is on a 1.6x crop. I might still look for one when I'm ready though.

Daft question, and I think it was talked about a little back (but I can't find the comments) - for day to day photos that I upload to my flickr, I should be exporting them from lightroom in sRGB right? Not ProPhoto RGB (that seems to be the default). I've noticed that some of my shots are a bit different when I look at them on the web (using Firefox 2) ><

Also... How do I change the colour space in CS3 when saving?

Nice shot Andrew.

As for the colour space, go to edit>Colour settings.

When saving, untick the box just under where you write the file name. Mine defaults to Adobe RGB and wont change.

I'm still not 100% but I asked the question last week and this has made things better when uploading.

Yes, sRGB is the go for web. Although some web browsers are colour space aware, a lot aren't and those that are don't always do a good job of it.
