Had a fashion shoot this arvo. 'twas fun, and something a little different for me. However, I couldn't help taking some close portraits too. Here's one straight from the camera (well ok camera -> LR -> export to jpg).
Beautiful model, although this is a very very tight crop, would love to see more of this set! Lighting wise it is very nice, soft and pleasing.

I am now posting from an upgraded Vista! I just finished installing the 64bit version!!! :D
I ended up downloading a retail version (See, not all torrents are the devil), which allowed me to use my current key to start the install. I'm now in the process of moving all my files back to my desktop, so it'll be a good few hours before I'm back on track.
After long last my ordeal is over though!

Cheers Luke. It is indeed a restaurant. They didn't ask for shots like you describe...

This was the only one I shot that tight. I had very limited space to setup so I couldn't throw the background out-of-focus as much as I usually would.

:P I got closer than I should have for that aperture.

v.nice greg, love them both!

Nice shots Greg. Both are great but the second one has excellent composition.
Thanks
First tax from me in a while. Finally finished off the shots from this shoot a while back.
Great series Adam.
Fantastic pictures Greg. Composition in the second one is nice.
Nice images Adam. Great vintage atmosphere.

Very nice shot Dave.
Beautiful shots greg, the colours of the sky in the first really help the whole contrast of the jetty. Second one has great composition and very good use of DoF at the right place!
Thanks

Interesting, Dave is a man of strong opinions and was never afraid of saying what he believed and sometimes arguing the point. He'd often have self imposed breaks from POTN (and maybe some temporary bannings - not real sure). Probably only a matter of time before he crossed a line he couldn't see.

ah yes... had many a conversation with Dave. nice guy with a lot of talent. I think he was sick of people telling him to stop complaining about Canon after he had a bad run with gear.

He's a far bigger fan of typing in preference to thinking, it appears. (Reading a few blog entries certainly gives that impression.)

Lens and set up please :D
First one was with a 10-22 rejigged to work on my 1D3. I opened up the legs of the tripod and had it low down with the centre column removed. Camera was on 3 shot bracket and this is the middle shot with 0 Exposure Compensation. 10-22mm at 14mm 1/3 s at F 8.00 with ISO 100. I had the 2sec timer on and the neat thing is it automaticly takes the three bracketed shots one after the in timer mode.
The second was hand held with the 85L 1/8000 s at F 1.2 with ISO 50. Really pushing things, another minute alter and I would have needed a filter to shoot at the same aperture, ore try to recover it in PS.
These are the other two from the same series. Much the same settings.

I use my Ipod as a 30gb flash drive. It keeps telling me I have to restore it to use it properly. lol
I can see why something like it would come in handy, however, I don't think I could handle it in the long run. It has a lot of limitations as is.

1.This is a refraction of a pringles tube behind a drop of water on an odd looking plant we had.

2. This is a half cut lemon refraction, this was also placed behing a drop of water.

3. A weird shaped egg refraction in a drop.

4. Gotta love the cola <3

What happened to the concept that the customer is always right? lol
Seriously though, I remember having a discussion with Michael about the level of quality your average client wants compared to the level that professional photographers want to give.
My argument was that your average Joe doesn't particularly care about composition or the exacting contrasts/brightness/saturation etc but rather they just want photos to remember the event or whatever - do the people doing Santa photos at Christmas really worry that much about such things?
After seeing my friends gush over photos that were only saved from the recycling bin because I thought I might be able to do something with them later on when I had time, I stand by that thought even though I will admit my photography skills are somewhat lacking in finesse.
I do think that 98% of the photos posted here of events or commissions are utterly fantastic and probably under appreciated by the clients who are probably so used to seeing the world through a point and shoot camera.

ROFL - paycheck every time. No contest. And I hardly think that's selling you soul :D It's all about them, not me. If I'm given free reign to do/try things, awesome. If not, I'll produce what I can to meet (and perhaps) exceed their expectations since that is why they hired me. They didn't hire me to extend my own creative talents, generally. Being able to deliver and not prima donna things is essential, at least to the clients I've worked with so far.
Greg - those pier shots ROCK! Beautiful.
Adam - love the car series!
Wedding yesterday was beautiful, but the ceremony was a tad fast - 4 minutes instead of the expected 20+ LOL First culls are done so hopefully will get to editing sometime this week.

Don't get me wrong, I'll usually take the paycheck too.
But I love the Chase Jarvis approach to this one:
(1) Get the shot the client wants. The "safe shot". Do it in the first 5 minutes (or thereabouts ;) ); then
(2) Request permission to shoot some awesome. Everybody wants awesome, you just need to sell it to them ;)
That said, I think we should be careful to define ourselves by the type of work we want to create. If a client wants to pay you to be lame, do it, but don't put it in your portfolio or on your website.

I was surprised that the local media was so close to being on the money today though. Not a lot of delay and only the facts were reported. They were very quick to mention that even though 4 cases had presented themselves, they werent confirmed.
A bit scary though, there are only three of us in my department that can handle the packages they come in and they must have full gowns, gloves, face masks and eye protection to just open the boxes.

1) Stronger support for the newer MASSIVE softboxes
2) Non-standard DC power. YEAH! Lots of backup now for the Vagabond on longer shoots.
3) CyberSync slot. Yeah! only +$30
4) No questions about (too much) color shift at lower light levels.
5) Eight (count them - 8!!) FStop range! OMG! I can get a powerful unit and not worry about stopping down to fill in low ambient anymore!!
6) High flash speeds for HS sync?

Indoors it works good like that, outdoors not, this is because the stofen allows the light to bounce all over the room, which can soften the light (adding fill) depending on the room...
Outdoors IMO they are next to useless...
While I was in edinburgh I saw a wedding photographer (who was missing at least three of his teeth...) using the stofen pointed up at the sky to "soften the light" I was very tempted to go to him and point out that the light he is getting is less soft now because the lightsource is smaller than the flash with no stofen at all....

Yeah, I'll definitely be doing that. The main problem is that I don't know what to expect so what I think might be alright isn't actually the best. Also a problem that I have to set it up on the computer with a Firewire cable rather than in the camera lol but it'll be worth it.
I've seen a few things on the Canon website about getting the best out of a 1D3's AF and it's capabilities, how much would that relate to the 1D classic and should I read it anyway?

The main reason I was using the stofen was that I found shooting with bare flash tended to overpower things. Since I was using ISO 400 and 800 at various times during the day with 1600 when the sun started to set, to keep the shutter speeds up to 1/125 minimum, I was really experimenting with different things. Bouncing off the ceiling was out because the venue was basically a big 1960's vintage shed. I had a good time playing though.
