Just never understood people's obsession with primes.

Play with an 85L for a bit...

Cover the zoom range of a 24-70 or 70-200 in primes for the same price :P

I appreciate the IQ, I just don't think the inconvenience and outlay is worth it unless you have a specific requirement to satisfy.

I only bought the prime because it was cheaper and I needed something wide. Unless I had the top of the range primes (35L, 85L, 135L, 300L, 400L) then I can't say I'd prefer them. But I need zooms

Each to their own needs... I have a 70-200 and a 135L and they both get used, just for different things. If I only did, say, events coverage I don't think I'd feel the need for the 135L whereas if I only did studio work I don't think I'd feel the need for the zoom.

In the end they're all just tools for certain purposes.

I dunno, i have the trio of L zooms and my cheapest lens 85 1.8 gets used just as much, if not more than the rest of them. But then again i do have a 5D, and everyone knows the 5D loves primes like a fat kid loves cake.

I would Love and 85L so much!!! anyone in syd have one that i can borrow? i can trade for 70-200L or something for a bit?

Exactly. That's why I said "unless you have a specific need." I feel that primes are too limiting for general purpose use.

^ Ah yeah Jim, i didnt read you post properly, i agree with your statement after all :) I wouldn't take primes out and about to cover an event, unless there was a specific need to have fast glass.

Sometimes it's nice to be limited - for my own personal creativity I enjoy the challenge of being limited to one focal length per lens... makes one think a lot more about composition and framing and do a bit more foot zooming rather than standing in one spot and just zooming closer.

I don't think that's that popular a view, though :p

Actually I've heard that said many times and I rather disagree (from my own experience.) More often than not, it hampers my creativity by not allowing me to compose how I want - obviously this is when foot zoom isn't possible or viable.

Quick question (Jim, everyone) - you're at an event with nightclub-like lighting and wish to do candid shots of the partygoers (head, head and shoulders, 1, 2, 3 people per shot, usual stuff.) Which lens do you use, and why? Your options are: 18-55 F/3.5-5.0 kit, Sigma 28-105 F/3.8-5.6, Canon 50/1.8, Canon 70-200/4.

Lighting is limited to ambient + single on-camera 580EX.

One of my favourite primes is my 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar... less than fifty bucks and has many good points... very sharp from f/2, build quality better than any other lens I own... if you're doing creative/fun stuff and can afford the time to MF then it's a fantastic way of getting yourself into some primes for cheap.

having said that, though, I can't use it with my 20D just because the viewfinder is so dinky and dim that it's too darn hard to MF. :p

Food for thought perhaps.

18-55 for sure, combined with a 580EX bounced off the ceiling with the white card up. ETTL w/FEC to taste. AF set to One Shot so that you have AF assist to compensate for the dim kit lens. Shoot in M mode - ISO 800, f/5.6, 1/100s or similar. Ought to get a bit of ambient in there if it's a dim pub etc. but still have everything be sharp/acceptably not-noisy. Even with a 400D you aren't going to be hampered by the noise at ISO 800, particularly not if you're just planning on small print/web usage.

28mm is too limiting - you'll always end up with people grabbing friends/randoms and the 3-person group is suddenly 6 and 28mm is too tight :p

Not really, depends what your general purpose is, obviously I wouldn't be taking primes only to an event, but I would certainly love a 35+ 50/85 for if it is darker (I am getting into gig photography, so another reason I would lurve some primes :p)

With the FL selection, I gaffaed my 24-70 at 35, 17-40 at 24, 70-200 at 85 and used my nifty, and I reckon 24 is just a bit too wide for me, 35 is great, 50 is great, 85 is great for longer stuff....

Haha, my advice with HDDs is to buy a primary drive and backup drive for every year, and then have an extra backup floating around for the current year off-site, keeping past years backups off site....

Good on you, would be well worth it :) I always laugh when I see baby pics of myself hehe.

I was expecting everyone to vote for the 50/1.8, but I find 50mm rather too long (on a 1.6x) and worried about DoF if I open it up anyway.

Take the 50 1.8 along anyway, if you have a single subject (DJ or 2 people headshot etc) it will give you a much brighter background and more natural lighting coming through.
Also since your zoom is quite slow maybe consider running a long-ish shutter ie expose for background -1 stop and then freeze the subject with the flash (works best with bright background and subject in darker area) Anyways just food for thought.

I'll pass for now ;)

You mean 300 ppi? then it is the resolution divided by 300 for you to have 300 pixels per inch of print....

although generally what I do to find out considering softness etc is zoom in on the screen until it looks just good, then measure the height of my screen (I always forget), then multiply by the pixels height of the image then divide by the pixels height of the screen, that will be the maximum height of the picture that looked good at whatever the ppi of your screen is and should get you in the ballpark for print....

Thats beaudifal! Im curious though, why are there guys going for the bouquet?

I think it is Kelsey Smith - Lean on Me as the base plus some sepia, contrast and sharpening presets. And its DPI according to the EXIF data. Any idea how large i could print that? What one is your favorite?

EDIT: Sorry i think it was Matt Klosowski's Surreal Edgy Effect (Dark or Really Dark) and then some edits from there. I used that on some of the others as well as the Kelsey Smith ones.

Angus, DPI is the correct term for printing... You could probably get away with 200dpi for printing that one.

At 300dpi you could print at 13.7" x 7.64". You really can stretch it. I think you'd be able to get away with printing 20" x 30" though and it't still look great.

Basic division.... pixels / dpi = print size
a couple of things i found handy: you can change the dpi in photoshop and it will calculate the canvas size for you. Also Digital works (where i print my photos usually) have a green, yellow, red light warning system when you choose a print size. so if you stick to green then you will have no probs.

I agree 200 dpi is fine.
Seems like your image has a an unusual aspect ratio. i had a look on digitalworks and the closest match that does not give a resolution warning is 12 x 20 or 12 x 24 (both with a slight crop). But I reckon you could stretch it up to 20 x 36 (perfect fit) without any problems.

Nonono dpi is just for inkjet printers, and is how many dots per inch, not pixels, what we are talking about is pixels per inch, the rest is right though :)

Yeah, also angus you should be able to print it even larger if you consider how far away you might be viewing it from.... a general guide for ppi vs viewing distance is 3484/viewing distance =ppi and then also consider the larger it is the further the viewing distance....
Also remeber genuine fractals can do a better job than just lowering the ppi alone...

Should be able to blow it up plenty big...

Quality camera maybe? or imagemelbourne, but their site is even more horrid, hey you know a bit about computers... Right, why don't you offer to design a new site for them in exchange for some lighting gear :p:lol:

Do any stores in Australia sell Lumopro umbrella swivels? Vanbar Imaging was a slight headache to look at, most of the products don't have images :(

Best thing to do with Vanbar is to call them, and explain you're calling them is because their website is so atrocious.

Lumopro is the MPEX housebrand so it's unlikely that anyone else would sell them.

Good call on this one. And definitely agree on the user unfriendly I.M site. Once you actually find their products it gets a little easier, but it's still shocking.

We're heading into Melbourne soon. Kinda weird - the planned shoot got called off due to injury to the subject, so we're going into town. Problem is, I was going past work to get my lighting kit, so I've got nothing with me at all. Oh well, just use Clarry's new PWs, I guess :-)

You've got a couple of flashes - if you've got a way of triggering them both, I'd get the shutter speed up, the aperture closed down (to underexpose the background), nice hard light (no umbrellas, and maybe some grids or gobos) and go to it. Should get good light on the table and nothing around it.

Fro the shadows it looks like 2 light sources then maybe a 3rd to light the background? Maybe you should try using the strobes in a cross light config, that way you will get more even lighting on the car, unless of course this was the effect you were after..?

Exactly that. I love capturing people just talking, doing whatever, catching up with relatives but no one's interested. My nanna turns 80 this year and we're trying to organise where it's going to be and all that because she's lived in Perth and different parts of Queensland so there's family and friends coming over. I did want to take some gear just to try and get some shots of the faces during the reunions and conversations but now I don't think it's worth it.

I'm gonna be waiting a while for kids to be at family gatherings. The youngest will probably only be about 12 unless some turn up that I don't know about. And the 12 year old isn't one who's very interesting anyway, if I'm honest

The funny thing is how different it is in other settings - like parties or nightclubs. Maybe it's a young person thing, but I took my camera to a party at a local hotel on the weekend and people were "oh hey come take a photo of us!" and will happily smile for you if you randomly point the camera at them.

Just like I said up there, they'll happily take their own myspace shots or ask you for some set up shots but if you catch them off guard they crack it and tell you they don't want photos. I should sit out in the city more often and just get people as they walk along

I think you're spot on, but I have a feeling it goes beyond just being intimidated by the size of it. I'm not sure what it is, maybe P&S = 'fun, casual candid happy snaps between friends' and SLR = somehow more serious and it's not fun any more. Like bringing an NRL player with you to a family game of footy in the park.

Funny how small groups will happy sit around taking silly photos of each other on their phones, but point a real camera at them and they go all shy.

Yeap. Her face ended up being closer during the flick than I anticipated. You'll also notice a lightened strip near her hairline from pulling back beyond the edge of the shoot through panel we were using.

Still, she made for one of the more impressive shots of the day. I am looking to upgrade my body though. The 400's AF is a let down.

How are the Slik tripods? I keep wondering if the newer, lighter tripods these days are worth getting - the 055MF4 is a few years old and even with the new 055CXPRO4, it has shaved an extra 500g of weight.

I've got the 700PRO legs in storage - here in a month or so. Nice to use, but reasonably heavy.

This thing so far seems awesome. Built like a tank and gets nice and low for under half of the price of a manfrotto similar model. Mickey you need to get to the gym mate there not that bad :p

I use go daddy for my international domains (which it has)... and then shop around for AU domains... i've used netregistry, melbourneit, jumba, smartyhost, and a few others that I can't remember off the top of my head.

I got home and there was a big parcel on my front porch, much the size that a lens would arrive in.

@ justal,Love shots 1&3 the way the hair flows out and the lighting although I don't know that up the nose is a good angle 4 I like the mood as for 2 the finger pointing detracts from it.

I've been using namecheap.com for years, and been very happy with them (non-.au domains.)
