Last question (Im sure you are getting sick of them by now)....is it better then xp?

Also im on a laptop with a sata hdd which needs a driver. Does windows 7 have it in the install?

I'd say it's much better than XP. But then again, I liked Vista, so take that how you will... :p
So your laptop is running in SATA AHCI mode, it would come with a driver however I would still recommend you install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver (or whoever your chipset manufacturer is).

As much as I'd love an iPhone, my Nokia E71 is REALLY good. It's what's kept me from actually already having an iPhone, I think. I had one of the Motorola V3x's... we had two in the family actually. They were both so slow and one just stopped working altogether, the other just got worse and worse. I don't know how they ever sold any phones.

Well, funny story about that. We had a bunch of new Motorola Qs at first - awesome phones when you get a good one, but 90% of ours were faulty right out of the box - same buttons just don't work, etc. Kicked up a stink about it and Telstra replaced them all with the Touch Duals, which turned out to be at least as bad. Fast forward a year or so, I still have the Qs sacked up in the corner, and I find out that the faults we had with them can be fixed with a hard reset...doh

Motorola used to be beyond reproach, don't know about now. In any case, now I've got an iPhone, all WinMo phones look stupid to me. Won't be going back, ever.

I went through the same thing a couple of months ago.. it was either the E71 or the iPhone. I went for the iPhone having decided there were too many features on the E71 I'd probably never end up touching. I've been very happy with the iPhone so far - I'm actually surprised how much I've been impressed with it.

The only reason I have the E71 over the iPhone now is because it was $0 upfront. My parents didn't want me spending money on handset repayments (I was saving for my 70-200 ) so I settled for it. I only really use the Wi-Fi but I like using the phone that much that if I really want an iPhone, I'll just get an iPod touch :p It's also built solidly for how thin it is.

That's not to say I wouldn't have loved the iPhone though

I've been living with an N70 for the past few years so its quite an upgrade to move onto the N97. So far, so good too.

Well, ignoring games, apps, and fashion, and focus just on the actual interface, iPhone v. WinMo is a one horse race, IMHO.

Yes, like the iPhone. What are we bickering about again?

and not a fashion statement...

Some treat the iPhone as a fashion statement, many don't. The fact that it can pass off as a fashion statement doesn't detract from its merits of being a great phone.

It's a bit daggy but if it works well, it's worth it. I don't think it's essential though. It would suit event photography, especially if you're moving around a lot. I wouldn't carry around more than a 24-70/70-200, 16-35/24-70 or 16-35/70-200 combo and most of the time you end up preferring one over the other anyway so it'd probably just keep it closer to your shoulder and you can worry less about it moving around or whatever as you walk.

Woohoo :) Good stuff.
The most used feature in Windows 7 for me is the drag window to side of screen to make it occupy half of the screen real estate or whole if to the top. Love it! Wished OSX had that.

But OSX indexing is still far superior :)

Someone should be able to tell me, I know Sam knows exactly, but is it the Dell Mini 9 that you can install OSX on? And how does it run for general things? My mum told me she can apply to get half the cost of a laptop back because we're in high school and she said I could get a new one and mine will go to my sister. I'm thinking about a smaller laptop but I'm not sure I want the 9. Does anyone know if the Mini 12 can run OSX? I would much prefer that size.

Edit: Apparently the Mini 12 is a terrible laptop for a lot of reasons. I might just get the 9 and put up with the size.

Another edit: The Dell website doesn't list the 9 anymore, it's only got two 10 options and the 12. I guess it's discontinued then :( But the 10 does look like a good option anyway, with Windows 7

You sure? I bought one only a couple of weeks ago. Yes, the 9 is the OSX compatible one - the chipsets in the 10 are totally different.

Edit: you're right, it's gone, replaced with the previously US-only 10v model for the same price.

Yeah, I just found out that the 10v was announced in late May as a replacement for the 9. It's apparently a stripped down version of the original 10 and it's $100 cheaper. Only thing I noticed through quickly looking at the specs is no webcam though  I guess it will be in stores by now or soon and whatever is left of the 9 is the last of it.

To be honest, I would have had a go at installing OSX just because it was compatible. If it's not, I don't mind. I'm happy with Windows 7 as it is. I might mention it to my mum tomorrow. She wanted me to pay for some of it so it might be a case of Siggy 24-70 or new laptop and I think I'd rather the lens :p

I must have got one of the last ones then, only had it a couple of weeks. TBH, it's very limited for general use - the screen resolution is too small and the keyboard is cramped. Fine for what I want (light for carrying to work every day, and the odd bit of network admin/troubleshooting) but you'd only want it for occasional use.

Yeah that's why I was more inclined to get the 12 but I don't want a crippled laptop that I can't upgrade. All the 12/13" laptops seem to be tablets or just relatively expensive business models. The only one I've seen that's close to doable was a display model Toshiba at Harvey Norman for $1500 but even that's a lot.

My cousin has had a few problems with his, much more than you'd expect from a laptop, but he doesn't treat it that well and it's probably his use that's forced the problems because a the same time I know a few people who have HP's and they're fine. I just generally don't like the feel of them. I've never liked the touchpad and the keys of them. I don't really like the touchpad on Dell's or Asus' either, maybe I'm just used to the old style touchpad that my Toshiba has  I'll get used to it if I get it though, and I think it's my first choice if it happens.

Any Excel experts out there? Need advice.

I'm working on a comparison of the hours my depot worked in our last roster compared to a proposed new roster and I can't seem to get Excel to add up the hours properly.

We work varying hours between 7h 00m hours and 8hrs 33m on any given day and every time I use the formula SUM(B4:B36) to add up the 32 rows of hours worked, it only adds up the the first and last row. Either that or it doesn't understand I want hours/minutes as the output and it's giving me days/hours instead.

Suggestions? Office helps is absolutely not helping.

I stayed inside most of the day until I went to the shops and bought a few PS2 games, $10 each  Found out I'm working twice this week as well (for once) so that'll get me closer to a Siggy 24-70 :) Although I'm really keen on one of those Zenitar fisheyes in M42 mount (AU$250 on ebay) to use on my Voigtlander SLR and then buy an M42 to Canon adapter to use on my Canon's.

For this July's photo walk we're heading into the wilds of St Kilda.
So come on down on the 19th at 3pm.

We'll meet at the monument in the middle of the tram tracks at the intersection of Acland and Carlisle Streets across the road from the park and as depicted in this map (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=st+kilda&sll=-24.846565,135.703125&sspn=0.305936,0.622101&ie=UTF8&ll=-37.867143,144.978146&spn=0.00104,0.00243&t=h&z=19)

We'll make a slow circumnavigation of the surrounds so I hope to see y'all down there.

I think your memory or hard drive has gone kaput. The former most likely I believe. Do you have any spare parts lying around that you can try? If there are two memory chips on board, perhaps take one out and try to install win7 individually.

Definitely gonna go along then. June 4-6 according to the website (didn't think it would be up already :lol).

Side note, if anyone is after an amazingly cheap Tamron 17-50/2.8, I'm talking nearly half price, read this: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1214208. It has the makings of a scam but it turns out it's just a really cheap price. I'd go for it myself but AFAIK, it won't work on my 1D. Of course, it's still a bit of a risk even if someone else got their lens all good.

Apart from Seal Rocks, there's the Penguin Parade (don't use a flash) and also a Wildlife Park near there too, you can get right up close to the Koala's, but i can't remember the name of it ???

If you took a trip down there in a few months, you could come onto the race track with me ..... I'm down there for a ride day.
If you had leathers and a helmut, you could even get onto the track as a pillion rider.

Try an authorised repairer for the cleaning. Cost me $170 to clean my 17-40 after Africa, Canon itself wanted closer to $300

Haha yeah it's probably a good idea. I don't try to baby my gear but I never seem to be in any situations when I need to worry. Not that I'm complaining

Any one you can recommend Angus? I don't "really" mind sending it to canon but if I can get it cheaper elsewhere then why not..

so while I'm here, who wants an 85mm 1.8?

don't use the thing anyway..

soon it'll just be me and my trusty ole 17-40L. and an old minolta 55mm 1.4 that I haven't modded yet.

Anyone else here a member of the small www.digitalslr.com.au (http://www.digitalslr.com.au) Forum? Its closing down on 19th July which is a shame. Small group of less than 1000 members which Ive learnt a lot from (as well as POTN and AusPhotog forums)

An 85 sounds good but I'm going for a Sigma 24-70 soon so then I'll have the 24-70/70-200 combo covered. Would love something wider as well as that but I want f/2.8 and I'm not made of money

Edit: Something wider as in Tamron 17-50 but I want it to fit my 1D as well as my 400D so the 24-70 is the best option.
