Had a bit of an Ansel Adams moment today... Had been overcast all morning and I was outside repotting some plant when the sun came out. Eastward the sky was still black with cloud. Perfect conditions for re-creating a scene I took a couple of years ago (had only shot in JPG back then and ever since have wanted to do it in RAW). So anyways, chucked some clothes on jumped in the car and lead-footed it down to the harbour. Unluckily there was a footy game on so there was cars everywhere and I had to park a few streets back then walk down. Of course thaat meant I missed the light and I had to wait around for another 30 minutes for the sun to come back out... sigh. I think the dramatic lighting was worth the wait although my shots probably don't do the actual scene justice.

My teacher at school today told me that I'll have a guaranteed job shooting a few paid annual events from next year when I leave :) I shot one of them this year (bought my 430EX that day and shot with it that night) and I know I'll definitely have to be a bit more organised in terms of lighting for it. I'll worry about it next year

Anyone know how cheap you can go for a backdrop? ImageMelbourne has 6x3m ones for $85 and I've never looked anywhere (just found that by chance).

You could fix it relatively easily with a mesh warp.

I see nothing wrong with Windows at all. Just like the feel of Mac OS :) But having grown up using Macs, I would say that.
Same, I've gotten used to the Mac OS so prefer it... Windows is fine for me to use, it's just not as natural...
I remember when I was in Czech Republic, the Audi was broken into. They took my Aunt's Sony flash head, one of my Dad's jackets. They also ripped out the Blaupunkt media head unit, dismantled the speedometer and unmounted the steering wheel.

Czech, beautiful place. Riddled with crime.
Highly skilled.

Well what it does is that it cripples the car. Even if you manage to replace all the stolen parts, sometimes the car will still not work as each piece has a unique code to allow them to start up. The original key was useless so the car had to be towed back to Switzerland to be fixed.

There is probably a number of reasons why. Smuggling purposes, making it troublesome for the owner as it did for us or even for monetary purposes.

Ohhhh, that's a really bloody annoying thing for them to do!

I put the AP up in the roof and there are cables coming down from the manhole that my mum is not too happy about
It give me a hell of a lot better signal than being taped to a double brick wall though

Oh, and we bought a new tomtom at DSE, The price they had listed was 300, I saw one that said not new so asked how much that would be and he said 250, so I bargained him down to 180
It is now got 8.413 navcore and 830.2352 maps on it and I managed to get a better TTS working that actually make a bit of sense

The guy went to one of the computers where you can see what he is doing and I saw the cost price of the not new one was 160
I then convinced him he was ripping me off:lol:

Those cheaper tomtoms are great deals since you can put on navcore and maps that support all the features that are in the top of the line ones... IE i've got a $180 gps that works like the top of the range one and just looks cheap :)

I mean, when I do it by hand I just use a slow left to right motion... seems to get the job done well enough for me. Was a bit messy at first but after some practice I learned how to do it with a reasonably clean result.

Anyone know if Acer's laptops have improved much in the last couple of years? I like the size of both and Samsung's smaller NC10 got great reviews so I would assume the NC20 is similar. I had a go at the Acer just before and it feels good. Haven't and won't get to try the Samsung before I possibly buy it but I've bought a few things without having tried them :p Anyone recommend one over the other?

Edit: Similar prices too, I think the Samsung is about $100 more at $850 vs $750. Also, I'm not considering the Dell Mini 12 because AFAIK you can't add more RAM and it's stuck at 1GB whereas both the Samsung and Acer can be upgraded to 2GB.

OK... I thought I was too. Now you got me wondering.

I mean, when I do it by hand I just use a slow left to right motion... seems to get the job done well enough for me. Was a bit messy at first but after some practice I learned how to do it with a reasonably clean result.

:p

I am so glad that no one used the term PICSORBAN here. phew!;)

Depends on how close you look and how well you captured the images. Always shoot in Portrait orientation with a good 30% overlap.

It has given me some nice 30 second hand work with a 7 x 2 monster

Was anyone interested in my Yongnuo OC-E3? Just putting it out there in case Shaun didn't want it (spoke to him about it last night, hasn't got back to me yet, he'll have first preference though).

Quoting from yesterday in case anyone is interested...

Nice, what have you decided on?

I'm going with an all Yongnuo lineup. Al likes their flashes (YN460, about $60 each) and I've read a whole thread on Flickr about them so I settled on them. As well as that, I found a thread on Yongnuo's own triggers (CTR-301P, about $75 for a trigger + 3 receiver set) and they work well too so that'll be my kit :) Light stands will come soon

The flashes were liked because of the price. You can get more power from 580's and the like but what's the point? I'm not using TTL so I'd rather save the money towards a monobloc setup like the AB's and Vagabond setup.

That's why I'm buying them. I'm not using them for anything where I'll need a lot of power or TTL either, which I'll still have my 430EX II for anyway.

Hmmm, because of their price I bought 4. strapped together they still have more power than a 430 which by itself doesn't really have that much more power than the 460.

I find I'm using my 460's strapped together in twos and threes more than the single 430....grouped they are still cheap and they've worked well

Just a touch off white through the whole place, but the consultant was really impressed with the way I could pick what colours were used in the various swatches. I just told her I could see the difference in colour temperature :-)

Seriously, it was a really well spent $120 - got advice on the colour flooring to get (getting bamboo through the place - the carpet and the crappy floating floor is ... well, crappy :-), how to setup the room, etc. Really really good.

Anyone know if Acer's laptops have improved much in the last couple of years? I've got two laptops that I'm contemplating, the Samsung NC20 (http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=computerperipherals&type=notebookpc&subtype=mininotebook&model_cd=NP-NC20-KA01AU) against the Acer Aspire 751 (http://www.acer.com.au/acer/product.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&inu49e.current.c2att92=864&link=ln314e&CountryISOCtxParam=AU&kcond47e.c2att92=864&rcond159e.att21k=1&kcond48e.c2att101=60749&rcond190e.att21k=1&acond23=AU&sp=page17e&rcond157e.c2att92=864&ctx1g.c2att92=864&kcond50e.c2att92=864&rcond45e.att21k=1&rcond158e.c2att1=92&ctx2.c2att1=92&inu53e.current.c2att92=864&rcond44e.c2att1=92&rcond186e.c2att92=864&rcond189e.c2att1=92&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=366136644)

I'll say it again, I would go for a better built machine :p

It's pretty close to white, so it should work fine :-)

I'd have loved to live in Richmond, but just couldn't afford it in the end. Buying in Collingwood gave us a bigger place, another car bay, and enough spare cash to paint it and put new bamboo floors right through. Worth putting up with the suburb in the address, I think :-)

Could it actually mean a rate of 500 frames per second - each frame is a 1/500th of a second increment?

You could probably capture a series with a fast camera like a 1D triggering a flash to freeze the motion. Likely only get a couple of worthwhile frames though.

To do a slow-mo series with stills cameras and flash a way to do it (only with something that constantly looks the same, like that video of a D3 taking a photo) is to use the trigger to add a very small increment to the delay from triggering event to shot and repeat until you have the whole thing in slowmo... Or you could use multiple 1Ds and sets of strobes and delay each camera separately to achieve a high frame rate
Will you have support or are you doing it by hand?

Okay, I know where I am going to go, the jetty at the end of Queen St, and where the sun will rise relative to there and roughly what I will want in the shot (will change depending on clouds and if it actually looks crap in reality)
Sunrise is a 7:15, so I will want to get there about 6:50, so will have to wake up around 6 to be safe (hope I bloody wake up )

100 degrees is the expected horizontal angle I should want (should give me roughly sun on rule of thirds) from just a bit west of QV1, so that would mean that three vertical shots with 30% overlap at 17mm would cover me and a bit...

Do I think about it too much

17mm might be pushing it a bit far. I generally try to stay on the normal side of 24mm otherwise you get too much distortion and the stitching programs struggle lining everything up. Either that or they give you a very rounded horizon.

Nice! Sounds like not all of them are Canon Speedlites? At least they work well :) When I was researching and reading the threads about the ones I bought, people said they were working perfect up to around 100ft which is around 30m as well. I can't wait till they come :)

Nah, two 580exIIs, 1 SB26, one SB600 and a Vivitar 285HV.

Awesome - radio triggers are the best fun.

Indeed - also good to have more receivers and a reliable system (as opposed to the one cactus trigger and two opticals I was using previously).

I snoozed for an hour and twenty minutes this morning. Snoozing is the best!
I kepted pressing snooze for 40 mins...Now I'm late for work. Only got 3 hours sleep :(

I hate snoozing... always makes me late for work. Using my blackberry for alarm doesn't help. It's a scroll click to snooze and a scroll click in the other direction to turn it off. Not something one tends to do correctly when half asleep.

I was about 5 mins late. I do happen to work across the st from where I live though, so I can realistilly roll out of bed 20 mins before I start. :D

Luckily every button on my phone will make it snooze, the only button to turn the alarm off is the red phone (hangup) button. It's great!

No, thats just how the reflection was, its weird because you can see the junk inside the cupboard, i did darken the whole glass by 1 stop in LR though as it was a bit of a hotspot.

Haha, good call I'll never be able to do a handheld pano again, ill be aughing too much.

Yes but i like it! must be the engineer part of me.

I'm guessing they don't teach you much spelling or grammar at you new school?
That's odd that it would do that... Also you can see the stofen fine... Haha
Hey mate, check out this: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=716967
Oh wow, that is so much easier than trying to figure it out myself!
17mm might be pushing it a bit far. I generally try to stay on the normal side of 24mm otherwise you get too much distortion and the stitching programs struggle lining everything up. Either that or they give you a very rounded horizon.
APP corrects distortions (for the lens) before making the pano, as I said, good stuff :p
All my panos have been around 17mm-21mm and come out fine...
MARK, WAKE UP!

You missed your 6 alarms!
Nah, I missed the first two (on the clock) and one on my laptop before the one on my desktop came on with very very loud drum and bass which woke me up and sent me stumbling towards my keyboard to try and press FN-F10 to shut it up, then finding out the software unmutes it if you mute it and I had to type in a captcha code to get it to switch off, that woke me up damn well  Very effective though
Although after I got there I realised that all my times were still daylight savings (since I CBF changing them and just read them automatically adding an hour:lol:) So sat around for about 50min then shot some panos :)

I'll post some photos soon enough...

I have found Mitsubishi Challenger, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Nissan Pathfinder, Jeep Wrangler, Subaru Forester... Also does you people have advice on how to inspect a car and what to stay away from?

Right right. Good plan. :p

How much do you have to spend?

The old Nissan Patrol Short wheel bases are pretty good. They'll be old and cheap, probably with some mileage too. I still want one though.

Jeep Wrangle would also be fun. ;)

I don't want to go over 10-15k, my mum gets annoyed at me wasting her time if I show her something with over 150k, is she right that I should steer clear?

Patrol short wheel base, I'll have to look into that, thanks :)

Yeah, I was thinking the Wrangler might be fun, another concern is relaibility, I do want something 1D solid

Wrangler is 1D solid. I don't have a picture of it anymore, but a family friend used to own one. It was an event 4x4. Awesome car!

He now has a Nissan Patrol Ute. I want it when he sells it.

Oh sweet, are most of the 4WDs I put 1D solid, IE which ones do you know aren't... :)
Is the Jeep Cherokee also fun/good off road, looks a bit more uhhh practical than the wrangler
Edit: I am an idiot, I just realised that a two door is perfectly practial for me, I am only one person and it is only likely I will be taking one other person with me anywhere, if more then I could use a my dad's landcruiser... Something smaller is easier to park and such, I'd imagine less fuel consumption, cheaper, more fun (I think)... I am more sold on a Wrangler now  How many km's should be a good limit for one with my budget?

Reminds me of a techie I worked with last year who converted his VW beetle to a ute , except that Patrol utes are sort of like the Landcruiser utes?

Yeah, he was a really crazy guy, never seemed to get more than two hours of sleep between working with us, a band and another production company, would always rock up tired as, but manage to stay awake the whole time and do alot of work in a short period of time (like rigging/derigging mainly since we had a ridiculously short turnaround on shows one after another then), then during shows he would sleep and somehow wake up just before his cue, do it and go back to sleep  He managed to reprogram a 200 lighting cue show in half an hour when the lighting desk got buggered up by a power surge, I do not know how the hell he did it!
The Beetle ute was hilarious, pretty much cut off behind the front doors down to maybe a little bit above the wheel well then fabricated a metal uhh corner thing I guess (dunno how to describe it) to cover the hole and fabricated a tray that stuck out the back a bit and was the same width

I selected the background and the ground images from http://www.cgtextures.com/

Place your background as a layer over the image of the person. Use Scale to fit it to your canvas

In the layers tab, set the layer to overlay. Suddenly the shadow and person become visible through the layer.

Basically you only have to delete the layer where it is over the person.

The easiest way to do this is by using a mask.

Select the top layer which has your background on it.
Select the menu option
Layer / Add Layer Mask / Reveal all.

Now select a soft brush and set the colour to black & paint over your person. This will hide the background layer.
If you make a mistake, change the brush colour to white (Shortcut is to press the X key) and paint the layer back in.

Do the same for the next layer (eg floor if required).

Foresters are good and small if you dont need low range.
