BTW, what is a good used first car, I want a 4wd that isn't crap off road but isn't Landcruiser/Patrol size... I have found Mitsubishi Challenger, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Nissan Pathfinder, Jeep Wrangler, Subaru Forester... Also does you people have advice on how to inspect a car and what to stay away from?
What do you want to do with it? You've included one AWD in there so you need to decide your realistic usage first.
Around town mainly? Dirt roads in National Parks? Playing in the dunes and on beaches? Long distance touring? Outback travel?
Vitaras are great all rounders and reasonably frugal. Jeeps are great offroad but are thirsty buggers. Challenger is a rebodied previous generation Pajero.
For $10-15K Id stay away from diesels as they will be high mileage and repair costs will cripple you.
Happy to give an opinion on most things 4WD so ask away. Just remember 4WDs are a bit like photography - you spend big bucks up front and then spend another small fortune on bits and pieces as you go. My most recent suspension kit cost me $5K

Foresters are good and small if you dont need low range.
Yes, it's very secure. Only thing extra you can do is to run a Radius authentication server, but seriously no-one will crack your WPA2.
I probably would want low range for dunes/beach...
Ahhh good... The AP I ended up with (UltraWAP-N) actually has a built in Radius server, but I couldn't figure out how to get XP to work with it

Okay now I can sound stupid, what is the difference between an AWD and 4WD
I am probably wanting to go around town alot/primary, then what I want is to be able to get to places on tracks (worse than dirt roads) around the place and also play in dunes a bit, but not as much as being able to get places...
So wrangler are not economical? Hmmm... Is the challenger any good? I always thought it was built off the triton chassis  Mmmmm, confused... Maybe the Vitara is the way to go, but with that there is only one for sale in perth I have found
I like the Wrangler for not being huge, good offroad and solid... Hmmm, how solid are the rest of them...
What do you think of the Pathfinder and I just found the Hilux Surf?
And is the Cherokee any less thirsty?
Also what about LPG for 4WDs?
Sorry for so many questions, I just have no idea

+1 haha Cameron, you have a good employer for not caring about you leaving early, why are you going to bunnings!? ;):p
Mmmm, but wouldn't a good off road car work for commuting just fine? Apart from being a bit more expensive for prelot... I don't care about the speed/acceleration and such :)

Because I want something more hands on. Sitting in a office 5 days a week doing basically nothing gets boring after about 9.30am. Facebook fills me into about 11.30am and then I sit on POTN until I leave.

AWD doesnt have low range gearing - Forrester, Rav, Xtrail, etc
LPG on a small 4WD will take up a lot of your already limited luggage space or hang down ridiculously underneath.
First Cherokee and Wrangler have the same 4.0L petrol motor so similar economy.
Challenger is OK but nothing special. Pathfinder is good but fairly big. Surf is a grey import 4runner.

I like my Pajero but it's probably too big for your liking. Also the 3.8L V6 sucks a fair bit out of the wallet at refuelling time. The older ones seem rather popular... smaller engine, lighter and don't cost much these days. You'd just want to be careful checking everything out if they've been used off-road a lot

Pick up the Dog and Lemon guide from your local newsagent - very valuable information in there, not least the safety ratings of anything you might want to look at and some very good tips on what to look for with each specific model when buying secondhand. One of the best $25 you can spend when looking at cars, imho - a lot of info in there that's hard to acquire otherwise.

Diesel is win :) *for mileage*
Diesel 4WDs advantage is their range which is different to economy. ;)
When you factor in the higher service costs (more $$ and more often) plus the huge cost of repairs if anything goes wrong then the "economy" side evens up a bit. Other advantage of diesels used to be their simplicity but that is long gone now.
Having said that, for my use I would only have a diesel :D

On a Range Rover note, the best ever Range Rover was the Bush Rangie. Google it for pics. They were awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We've got the same Pajero as you. I don't mind driving it but I wouldn't want to have it for myself. My sister would though, she loves driving it for some reason! The only reason my parents don't let her drive it as much is because of the fuel costs. It's never even been off-road seriously though :p

Certainly the range of deisel is a win over petrol. Another thing is the fuel isn't as volatile so it's safer to transport a bit extra around in a jerry can. It can also be a bit better on economy depending on what type of driving you are doing.
Mark, depending on what you are intending to do with the machine I would think about whether LPG is a good option. Sure it will run fine but if go out into regional areas they are less likely to have LPG available. Plus if you run out you can't exactly walk to the nearest servo and ask them to fill your jerry can with LPG. That said, I've heard of a few ppl installing duel-fuel systems (LPG + Unleaded) which seams to be a pretty good solution however you lose all your storage space for that.

50 hours of driving, including atleast 10 night hours.

After 6 months you can get your P's aslong as you have past the test and done 50 hours.

As far as I know everyone gets their L's at 16 but some states can get it at 17 and obviously earlier :p Never knew about that in SA. Ours you have to be 18 to get the P's and have been on for at least a year, you can get your L's at 16 so most people will be on them for 2 years or thereabouts.
Edit: Ours is 120 hours with 10 hours of night included. The night driving is the easiest part because I can only really drive at night during the week because my mum doesn't let me drive with her and my dad doesn't get home till it's dark :p

Pendulum, there are horses for courses. As a very happy owner of a subaru, I can vouch for their reliability, build quality and sure-footedness. On bitumen. I was following a mate up his driveway out the back of mullum(bimby), eight kilometres of partially washed-out bush track. Uphill for the most part. Whilst he just bounced his way up the track in his venerable RWD bravo, I was reduced to 5-10 km/h trying to avoid bottoming out (admittedly, a forester has better clearance). At one point I found myself with smoke pouring out of the right-front wheel arch due to loss of traction, the forester will share this problem. I still love my car.
OTOH I recently got behind the wheel of a mate's discovery (auto, creature comforts, 4WD), when he suggested that I should drive up this hill and check out the traction control. He warned me that I may lift a wheel, but not to worry. When we reached the top, we got out and re-traced our "steps". There, sure enough was a spot where the track showed - clearly - that we had indeed lifted a wheel. I couldn't feel it and I was warned to look out for it. I couldn't tell. Bear in mind that 4WDs must be run in 2WD mode on bitumen (unless they're really expen$ive 4WDs) due to a thing called wind-up.
Executive version: Due to the fact that all four wheels are locked together and minor variations in tyre diameter, turning radius and friends the whole drive-train can lock up. The reason that it doesn't do so on dirt is because of the slip that a loose surface allows
Here's (http://www.4x4abc.com/4WD101/def_turnfull.html) an explanation as to the differences between AWD, full-time 4WD and part-time 4WD. Read it twice, It'll make more sense then (at least it did for me).
HTH.
My mates disco cost him around six grand. Creature comforts, real 4WD traction and hill descent control and (downside) around 15 l/100km (more on the higher side I expect). But It didn't feel like it weighed over two tonnes. By comparison, I get 9.5-11/100 around town.

Not quite true.
A fulltime 4WD can be driven on grippy surfaces beacuse of the centre diff. If you lock the centre diff it becomes the same as a part time 4WD and can get transmission wind up. Unless the vehicle is fitted with front and rear difflocks then the four wheels arent "locked together". Centre difflock shouldnt be confused with cross-axle difflocks.

How about some UV sensitive dye and a massive black-light off to one side? Not taking the p!ss, it's a genuine suggestion.

Glenn, to find out shoot this http://www.forexguru.co.uk/adminpages/time.html at full drive for a full burst then count the number of shots in a second in the middle, I got 10 8)5.698 on my 50D manual everything (inc focus).

I would have been a lot more creative with dyes and all that if I'd been serious about it.. to be honest I wasn't as prepared as I should have been. I kind of just went out and rushed nearly everything because it was so cold and annoying to fill up water balloons and have someone help me when they were usually unwilling...
Mark, I just took the shots and it seems to be 8. The first shot caught 95 milliseconds and the 8th in the sequence was in the next second but anywhere from 01-99, it was 2 figures but it was blurred. Maybe I just expected it to sound faster because of the videos I'd seen on Youtube  I shot 1/1000 ISO 800 (f/2.8 but I focused beforehand with * and didn't touch it during shooting) but I got my 8 per second so I'm fine :p I remember reading in the manual that the 8fps was tested at speeds faster than 1/500 in their own factory so I just went for 1/1000 to be sure.

Land Rover's a cheap in Sydney. Mainly cause rich North Shore mother's would buy them and now have no need for them so they sell them cheap with low mileage. It's great! ;)

Defender and Discovery are very different models.
Defenders are very much stripped out work horses. Discovery's are somewhat more of a Luxury model made for the rich mum's to haul the kids in with a lot of 4wd prowess.

Actually there is a tsunami warning - there was an underwater quake of 7.9 off the south island of NZ at 7:30pm. I looked at the BOM and they class it as a risk for coastal areas. We're expected to see some rough seas and flooding on the foreshore.

Mark learning to drive eh? $2000 will get you a car that will serve that purpose. Why look at spending a crapload of money on 4WD vehicles if you haven't got a license or the means to fill it with fuel or insure it. All you need is a cheap car - get a manual so you can actually learn how to drive and use gears.
Once you get your license (and a job), go out and buy your 4WD or whatever. Why hasn't anyone else suggested this?

If you are ordering filters, aren't you better off getting it from maxsaver.net, formerly hvstar.net? The stuff their are well priced and such. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
About a new car, it is arguable on what to get and you have to question yourself, are you really going to do that? Everybody knows people can talk but actually fulfilling them is another question. If you don't end up going 4x4ing, in the long run, you are just running yourself into the wall with fuel costs etc. Goes both ways :) But knowing Mark's situation, I understand :)

If you don't end up going 4x4ing, in the long run, you are just running yourself into the wall with fuel costs etc.
And even if you do go off-road, if you do the sums properly, 99% of the time it's cheaper to have a proper car and hire a 4x4 for when it's 'needed'. Not to mention there are a heap of other benefits, like keeping 4x4s off the road and out of the city, vastly improved safety for both occupants and others, etc.

I think when I eventually replace my 4wd Mitsubishi Triton dual-cab ute, I'll be going Petrol. The costs of diesel repairs is astronomical compared to the equivalent on a petrol engine.
The advantages of diesel have really dropped off somewhat now that it's not cheaper than petrol and petrol fuel economies have improved somewhat (still not as good as a good diesel, but good enough).

You're right about the expensive repairs, however Diesel has a lot more low end power which is very useful when off road. Especially in sand and mud.

So get a V8.
I'll agree on the smaller engines (like my 2.6L 4cly turbo diesel), there's a significant difference, but most of the large serious 4wd wagons have petrol V8s as the main option these days.

Cloud movement ftw - I like to get them where possible for my car shots too :)
bit of breathing time at work. No forum access but I have my trusty iPhone! Shame about the terrible battery life.
What happened to tor! ;)
Mmmmm, good point, maybe I'll just go with and econobox like Ed's and take my dad's landcruiser for 4WDing until/unless I get seriously into it...
It's been pretty cold tonight, and the every night I've been out for that matter..
I've been experimenting with some star timelapses. My first attempt yielded this - http://vimeo.com/5593664 - while my friends thought it was pretty cool, forgetting to set the focus caused some miiiiinor problems. XD
Second attempt was tonight. I'm still processing the timelapse, but here is a frame (from the beginning, before some bad clouds came over):
http://farm4.static.flckr.com/3631/3723345499_6e5a4b8d60.jpg
Shot with the 40D, at 18mm, 15 seconds @ f/3.5, ISO 1250.
I wouldn't mind a wider lens ;)
I tried to do a star trail photo a while back, but that didn't work so I turned it into a timelapse which sort of sucked... I think I still have it here somewhere
Cool shot dave, did you lightpaint the foreground?

I actually really like the movement in the clouds!
Aye, I changed tack to cloud movement when the conditions became apparent ;-)

I found the battery life to be not too bad last weekend. Didn't charge for 3 days and still had 40% left. Mind you, didn't use it much either.

The camera on a guy roped and weighted down tripod with a long exposure :p
You know what, just thinking about it, a really long exposure shot of the tide coming in could be *really* cool! People who got the ND1000 filters add that to your competition

Ah well I have no data plan at the moment, so no 3G data for me. Wifi only for me at the moment, thus when out and about, on idle in my pocket as a phone, the battery is acceptable.

The single biggest improvement I found was by turning off Location Services. Immediate improvement up to 60+ hours, with synching two email accounts.

Interesting stuff about the iphone battery life.. Yesterday I accidentally dropped my (5 year old) phone, cracking the screen. So new phone time. Probs going to get an iphone, tho I need to do a little more research.
Dave, awesome photo none the less! If it weren't for the tide, you might as well have done a timelapse. I used a 15 second shutter speed.. which gives the clouds an cool look. I think that some clouds are ok, because they add another layer of complexity to the motion that is going on.
Here is the one I made last night. It starts out ok, but at the end some light cloud blocks most of the stars :( - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2204475628#/video/video.php?v=129495239615&ref=mf (I'm pretty sure you can all view this)

Apart from the battery life, it's a pretty good phone, especially the new model, which has improved both battery life and speed noticably.
Given I'm usually around a computer, mine tends to stay plugged in, so the battery life isn't usually a problem. Sometimes get it pretty low when I'm out on weekends, but I really do use it a lot, both for phone and data.

Check out PRA Imaging - looks like they have them, don't know how their prices compare, but they will price match.

..or check out this forum's sell section - there are a bunch listed for sale. You'd save a bit of money, even with customs and duties from a good seller perhaps.

It's the GPS stuff. Maps uses it to place you on the map, the camera uses it to add GPS coords to EXIF, etc. The weird bit is that all apps that use it ask before they do, but even if you don't use those it still seems to suck battery.

In other photography related news.
I have a shoot on Monday morning in a proper studio (the place i did work experience).
So i have a few hours in their studio with there lights and all.
Problem is i got no idea how to use them properly :(
The shoot is for a friend who needs some photo's of dresses that she has designed, so i was thinking of going with a high key lighting approach.
Those with studio knowledge, if you don't mind helping me out that would be great.
I am going to use their white wall, and blow it out using a background light. But thats all i know really.
They have 5 Bowen Lights i can use, so any information or suggestions would be great!
(yes i will be looking around and doing my own research i just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions)
Cheers, Nic

Is someone wearing the dresses or on a manequin?
I've never been in a proper studio but if I was in your shoes I'd go the 2 lights eitherside of camera 45 degrees to subject.

There will be models wearing the dresses.
With your suggestion, add in a backlight or leave it?

Don't say you've got no idea then follow it up with you've got no time to learn. Make the time or you'll be in a world of sh*t in front of potential clients.
I'd highly recommend two lights on the background and one softbox on the model. I'll throw together some diagrams tomorrow morning for you....and sorry to be so blunt.

Thanks for the suggestion aswell, it is pretty much the same as what Jim has recommended, and most likely using.

Gimme a tic and I'll draw a basic diagram and some beginners instructions.
Ok, here goes:
For this setup, you'll need four lights (since you have five, this isn't a problem).
You'll also need to large softboxes (90x60 or larger), and a couple of bare strobes with wide-through reflectors on them.
Place your subject 2 to 4 m from the backdrop. Light the backdrop with the bare strobes, and the subject with the softboxes. If need be, attach a gobo or barn-door to the bare strobes on the model side to avoid direct spill, although the distance should help.
Now, before you turn on all the strobes, start with just one softbox (the one on the right in my diagram is the main light, start there). Turn on the modelling light and see where the light falls on the model. Turn the softbox left or right until you're happy with the shadow placement.
Set your camera to about f/8, iso 100, 1/200th. Take a test shot at minimum power and see how much light falls on your subject. Amp up the power until you're happy with the amount of light the main light is providing. Watch for light fall-off around the feet.
With the modelling light on the main light on, turn on the modelling light on the other softbox, this is your fill. Position that softbox to direct enough light into the shadow areas. Now set it's power setting to roughly 1/3rd to 1/2 that of the main light. Take a test shot and see how it looks. Remember you'll concentrating only on the model here, not the background.
Once you've sorted that out, turn off the main and fill and turn on the background lights. With the modelling lights, make sure they're aimed to cover the full area of background you can see through the viewfinder. Fire off a test frame at 1/2 power or so and see if it blows out the background (check your cameras histogram, should be well and truly on the right). Check your model isn't getting too much spill, if so, either move her towards you (and move the softboxes the same amount), or dial down the background lights a bit.
You've now got all your light power settings and camera settings sorted. Mark your model's position on the floor, so subsequent models can stand in the same place, and you're ready to rock'n'roll.
:)
