I've ran into a problem that I barely considered when I knew I'd own 2 bodies. I can't fit both into my LowePro Fastpack 250!
Hmm, I'll have to have a play with mine. I know I was taking two bodies before I gripped one of the 40Ds and before I got the Monster, but haven't used the bag since getting Monster. I've been using my Flipside 400 and love it.
Camera bags are like shoes - you simply can't have too many :D

Why? if someone contacts you the night before they need photos and they found you through a different client of yours why make it free?
Three reasons really:
1 - I don't earn my living from photography (thank goodness - I'd starve)
2 - I am a crap portrait style photographer (posing people sucks)
3 - I need the practice (did I mention the crappy stuff?)
4 - That's just the kind of guy I am (just thought I'd throw that one in so everyone knows what a great person I am)

Technically I've got 2 but one is tiny that I got with my 400D and twin lens kit :p

I could probably just put one in the bag when I need it but then where am I going to put the other when it's not in there? And sometimes I might want to use the 1D and the 400D. I can't see when but who knows lol

Just been out fiddling with my new Vivitar flashes. I was testing out there inbuilt optical triggers and was triggering them using the onboard flash. Anyway i could see them firing but they wern't lighting my shot so i moved them closer and full power, still no go. After about 5 mins of swearing checking settings scratching my head i realised i'm a moron and the ETTL pre flash was setting them off to early  So anyway 580EX on camera in manual mode and they work great

Somewhat related but not completely. Since I got my 1D yesterday, I understand the '400D feels like a toy' statement and I've been scared to hold it or put it anywhere because I just can't hold it and drop it like I can with the dinosaur!
Edit: I'm considering swapping my 400D for a 20D or 30D to use as a backup/higher resolution body next to my 1D. They're roughly the same price, the 20D is a bit cheaper, so it'd pretty much be a straight swap. Also because of the similar build/ergo. Ease of use would be much better!

Any feedback yet on those Sigma flashes???
They are very slow to recycle at full power, I am talking 5 seconds!!, at M2 setting, that's at 1/16th they shoot instantly. Build quality is basic, with plastic hot shoe mount that is a female fitting to suit a minolta and head which only angles 80 degrees forward and 35 degrees backward, with no swivel movement.
The only manual controls are the off, TTL,M1and M2 switch, and the test button. The flash zoom is only operated by on camera controls but its default setting is 28mm.
There is no pc cable or other connection points and no in built optical slave in this model.
So what do I do with the two of them, I will let you know!! But I am thinking they will be chopped to suit either hair lights or bg lighting.

Also, i find that the double sided shadow is off putting. it seems you are using two main lights rather than one main and a fill or reflector. And if I can suggest another area of improvement of the image, don't have the red glass wall dominating the image, it is such a strong colour it detracts from the great natural colours of the vegies!

Hey guys, I got asked by uni to shoot some academic portraits in a few weeks. There's one catch - I have to get the lighting setup precisely the way it was done by the previous photographer, so the wall of photos (by a range of photographers over the years) stay uniform in overall feel.
Here's an example of the lighting I would need (a shot by last year's photographer):
http://www.maths.usyd.edu.au/u/About/people/staffpics/JA_Hillman.jpg
I was thinking a large softbox 45 degrees front-left of subject, and some sort of a fill from the subject's direct right. Any advice?

Don't forget the slight rimlight coming from camera left.

Thanks Luke. I was getting shadows on the frount because the light was reflecting off the glass splash back.
I had to flashes setup. Basically, camera right and left at about 45 degreesish.

Woops, that's what I meant with 'fill from subject's direct right'. Used the wrong term! :)
So what's the best way to create a rim light in that situation? I guess a simple reflector would probably do the trick..
Edit: Or maybe I could make some sort of a small straw snoot/grid.
ofdphoto
2nd of May 2009 (Sat), 00:50
Yeah, you could snoot a flash or try direct flash zoomed in. Needs to come from slightly behind the subject, so watch for flare and use a flag if necessary.

Try working with one flash :)
Much easier to manage.

Clarenceeee where did you get your PWs from? Do you have them yet? If so, how do you find them so far? I watched TriCoast's comparison between PWs and RPs and the vast differences in the range just seem to be coincidence???
Wondering if I should just get Skyports or invest a bit more on RP/PW.
Haven't got em yet.
I'll be selling my RadioPopper P1s soon... ;)

Sounds good! One final concern remains: the background has always been a clean white-board (since every year, the photography happens inside a small empty room with a white-board). Basically, I'll need the subjects standing fairly close to it, which means shadows on the board itself. So to try and kill two birds with one stone, what about saturating the white-board with a separate flash behind the subject, which kills the shadows resulting from the main light AND results in a bounced-rim light? Would be awesome if this worked without a hitch.
Edit: Looks like this might have been what the previous tog' did:
http://www.maths.usyd.edu.au/u/About/people/staffpics/HM_Gastineau-Hills.jpg
Check out the left-side of the board being blown out. Looks like he had a main light on the right, which then created shadows on the board on the left. So he would simply bounce a second flash off that area from behind and below the subject, which both killed the shadows and resulted in the rim-light that we see. I could be wrong as I'm not a portraiture expert, but that's what it looks like to me.

Dave, I like the cover. Looks really cool. :)
Same, really nice cover Dive, like it....
The Mk III came back today, finally, after Canon putting the wrong address on the parcel and AaE being quite rude about redirecting it to me... They sent it to number 16 instead of 15.
AF seems much better, just loading up some test shots now to see how much better.
I love my mk III after the fix, before it was sort of love hate when it acted up, now it is just sweet! :)
ahh thanks for the link Mic. That's classic reading. Very stubborn store owner, and really not taking the advice of the masses. Shame really. Looks very unprofessional and like some kid threw it together in HTML101 back in the 90s. You'll always get people stuck in their ways though.
Yeah, thanks mic, made me laugh too!
In all fairness, hard drive failure is totally random.
+1, I buy whatever is cheap... (and backup!)
11.30am tomorrow is short notice?
You have an hour to shoot?
With all that official-looking gear you have, that should be a doddle ;)
I'd charge $200 to shoot, and include a $100 credit towards whatever prints / files the client wants. But that's just me.
I daresay you command enough respect to charge far more
LOL angus, haven't they taught you to pack light in your photo school thing?:p
Nah was attached to my scanner, easier way to listen to it as i had the scanner in one of the pouches.
Why the hell do you have a walkie talkie attached to your scanner that you are carrying on the street!?!?!
My tax for today. Pat thought Lilly needed a cuddle.
Awwww :)
This has a really weird 3d effect to it. It reminds me of looking at those magic eye pictures.
Yeah, I really really like it too, dunno what it is but it is crazy and awesome, not embarrassing, I think the grain might actually be helping it...
I have the Flipside 300. Great design.
I currently use the vertex 100, smallest bag most of my stuff fits in, also will use my TT pouches to convert smaller bags for use for only subsets of my stuff...
Very happy with the design of it! and the harness is very comfy too.
Yay for using available street lights when your umbrella blows into the drink:
Really nice recovery from a potential fail!
probably nicer with the more atmospheric look too...
Damian, a humorous image . Nice DOF as well.
Cheers Mic. Interesting. Dilemma dilemma , the impression I have is that the PWs over rely it's connectivity with the computer to change settings.
I would go new PW just for the TTL

Scanner was scanning Ambulance and Fire Brigade, i dont like having headphones on (just gets annoying - especially when there is nothing being said over the scanner)
The "walkie talkie" is just a mic/speaker for a simple two way radio, plugs into the 1/4 plug on the top of my scanner, ofcourse the mic doesnt work but it simply acts as a speaker closer up towards my ear so i can actually hear the thing.
Reason i carry it on the street is the same reason i have it on my desk or in my car, so i can know whats going on and it allowed me to get to two fires on that particular day.

Shadows are numerous and too harsh. You need to soften your lights and make the light believable. A single main light with fill is the go.

At the moment, probably. I haven't had a lot of time to get out and shoot. I don't remember the last time I charged them. 400D is gripped, so I'm not shooting off one battery.
Yeah, I haven't either. According to all my folders I only shot 4 or 5 times in April! Disappointing but it was going to happen with school. I can't remember the last time I charged my 400D battery either to be honest so that might have already lasted more than a month too. I gripped mine but never bothered with another battery. AA tray was good enough for me.

I got 3 batteries in total, when the grip runs out, a spare single to get me through. I'm also lazy, so charge only when I have to.

Maybe I shouldn't bother with the whole Vista thing, and just get this...

My Canon batteries last ridiculously long. Either that or I just don't shoot enough ^^.
I think I'm going to nuke my vista bootcamp and load up win7 sometime this month. Does anyone here have the alum. MBP? When I run on bootcamp, the trackpad resolution is so crap and double tap for right click doesn't work -_-.

I wonder if that might be worth getting, for me it depends on what the compatibility of programs will be like. A lot of people said Windows 7 was great but so many programs just didn't work.

I haven't heard anything about the programs either, I have heard it's a very good OS though.

For what I use, everything seemed to work fine. Office, CS4 suite and LR2.
One of the most handy features personally is the drag to the side to make it cover half of the screen real estate. A feature I wish OSX can have.

I'd put it on my laptop. I do run some games (simple games like Football Manager) but the bulk of it is Google Chrome, Messenger, Office. CS4 and LR2 are on the desktop now so I don't use my laptop for photos. I reckon I'll get 7 on Tuesday.

I don't run any games. PS3 is for games...Well, GTA and GT5 (God I wish they'd release the full version already).
Ok, this damn thing is now has all the updates. Time to give everything else a go.

Yeah... I have a PS2 for gaming so who needs a computer :p
Just a question, how do you install Windows 7, the one that's getting released on Tuesday?:o

I think you'll have to buy it of the microsoft site. From the article it looks like download only. I have no further info. :p
As for PS2/3. It's not my PS3, so, if the housemate moves out, I'll be back to PS2.
