$800 or there abouts. Optically it's not quite as good as the 16-35Ls but it's still f/2.8, FTM and built fairly solid...
So would it be a reasonable alternative to someone considering a new 17-40? Downsides?

Anyone wanna buy a LP-E6 Battery (5D Mark II)? I can sell it for $75. It's brand new in box, I haven't opened it. I got it last week for someone and they don't need it anymore. You can have the receipt too for warranty

You were talking about it with someone else a few weeks ago and when we were first talking about it you said something about July so I assumed you'd sold it by now  If I still go ahead with this and Dan gets an offer in the meantime yours is still there then too?
Yeh mine is still there... Im back in Oz on wednesday so any time after then is fine for a transaction... PM me when you are ready, Looking for similar price to Dan's, Maybe a tad less as it has minor wear.

That's cool. Message to Dan: If you get an offer from Andrew or something, it's fine because Angus has his  Do you have the charger plus a battery or two, Angus? I remember you've got two 1D2's so just making sure you've got a charger especially.

$700? Assuming I still have that 28-80 and didn't sell it after all... better check my cupboard.
Hmmm, gimme a couple of days and I'll see what I can do. My father is after a camera, and I could sell him my 400D and buy your 30D as a replacement (as a second body). I'm presuming it's in good nick, hasn't been inundated by sea-water, that sort of thing...

If you are after f/2.8 then yes. Downsides compared to the 17-40... not quite as sharp, slightly more barrel distortion... ummmm... no longer supported by Canon... other than that pretty much the same. The 17-40 is a very similar design but perhaps just a bit more refined.

Wait... you aren't supposed to use them under water???
Yeah, it's been looked after. I've given it a wipe down and I can't see any obvious scratches or anything. There's a very light scuff on the top LCD plastic and a couple of tiny scratches on the bottom... barely worth mentioning. Hasn't been dropped or anything and has had screen protector on the back since I got it. Probably could do with a sensor clean at some stage.

Well, as you just saw, Ed will keep his 70-200 so I'll look around for another used f/4 or if anyone else has one that wants to trade? I'm still keen, if I don't find one soon then I'll sell my 70-200 and bodies and get the 1D2 and then get the f/4 later.

Mark, No can do. It's from SKY Channel, but it's in the pub, not at home. They can only offer us the idea of an amplifier. They're bastards.

Nah j/k... The lens is supposed to use the EW-83C but Canon no longer makes it. If I remember rightly Angus was told by some Canon guy that it was the same mount as the 10-22 which is the EW-83E.
It does actually go on but you have to fight it a bit. I decided it would be better to cut some plactic to make it fit better but didn't want to do it to the genuine ones which we paid $40 each for... got a cheapie instead and chopped it to make it fit. So hoods are still spare... in box... never used.

f/2.8 is exactly one stop better than f/4. So while I'm shooting 1/500, you're shooting 1/250 at the same ISO and aperture. If I'm shooting 1/30, you're shooting 1/15. If I'm shooting 1/8000, you're shooting 1/4000.

You should have :p:lol:
It is one stop faster, which is quite a lot in low light... The shot I took of you with my 17-40 while I was waiting for a taxi was at f4 ISO 3200 1/15, just barely handholdable for me, if I used a 16-35 at f2.8 it would have been 1/30 which would make it *far* more handholdable... so yeah it does make quite a difference... Especially when you find yourself shooting basketball at f2.8 1/320 ISO 6400  I have time so will post a DOF comparison..

and where that f2.8 (or faster) really counts is when you're trying to use a 17-40L indoors without flash, at night. that's why WA primes are 'the bomb/so bloody expensive'
thanks angus - appreciate it even if it doesn't get past the problem. sold my 50/1.4 which would've been perfect for it - turns every coffee shot into espressoporn.

Yeah, definitely, but I think it's less so in a 70-200. You would generally buy the f/2.8 over the f/4 for the extra stop and the f/4 over the f/2.8 for weight. I bought the f/2.8 over the f/4 for the extra stop but I don't think it's been as needed as I thought.

Still can't see the Buy and Sell forums there. I still can't decide if I really want to do it  It's a lot of hassle. If it was for a 5D classic then I'd be doing it but it's not like I'm struggling with my 400D/1D classic combo and I'd have to put in a lot more because a 400D + 70-200/2.8 wouldn't get me enough to get a 5D + 70-200/4.

I thought you were after a 1DmkII not a 5DmkI?

He's saying he doesn't know if it is worth it for a 1D2, but if it was 400D+70-200 for 5D+70-200 he would :)

I am  Sorry. I've got a 400D + 1D classic at the moment. To go to a 1D2, I'd sell both of those and downgrade my 70-200 to the f/4. But I'm not struggling with what I've got now so it's not like I NEED to do it now. But if I had enough money spare to get a 5D classic after selling my 400D + downgrading 70-200 then I'd do it. So then I'd have a 5D/1D combo
I don't know whether or not to push ahead with it :(
Edit: Mark was spot on

ohh i see.
Glenn your just lucky you have the money to think about these things.
im still stuck with my 400D and tamron lenses, i cant even think about upgrading to a 50D or other until i get enough money in around 3 months.
So instead of sitting on here worrying about what im going to do to upgrade, i sit on here and try to learn about different things so that i can still go out take some nice photos even with my 400D.

 Nic I've got no money... Ever since I've had my job late last year, I saved up enough to buy my 70-200 in January. The most I've had since then at any one time is about $500 and I've bought my 1D, 24/2.8, 430EX II and now some flashes and triggers. Downgrading my 70-200 and selling both my bodies to get the 1D2 would most likely mean I end up with around $100, if that.
All I do is learn about more things, as soon as I get my lighting gear I'm going to do the 14 day project so I can get the hang of it.
I've been really bad with my money since I saved up enough to get my 70-200. I definitely didn't research enough either, I didn't know enough back then.

Well that makes abit more sense, i must admit you lost me with alot of your plans on the past few pages.
I know what you mean about bad about money.
I bought the 400D first, fine, good starter camera, then a bought a tamron 70-200 even though at that stage i didnt even know what f2.8 ment, very bad purchase.
Since then i have bought a 430EXII, 17-50, 580EXII, if i had done my research better, i would have saved the money bought a better camera and a 580exII instead of a 430EXII.
So many things i wish i thought through more or knew more about what i was doing, now i sit here wishing i had some better gear.
With no job it makes it hard for me to buy new gear when i would like, so unfortunately i don't get to buy a lot and when i do i tend to buy what i can afford instead of saving up for what i really want.

I didn't pay for my 400D, the first thing I paid for myself was the 70-200. It wasn't such a bad purchase, I just didn't think properly. I could have saved some money by getting the f/4, it could have gone towards another lens or I could have just had it. I worked a lot over the summer holidays so I thought I'd keep that up and have more money quickly but every week my work gives me one 4 hour shift and it's nothing. My girlfriend works 2-3 shifts and I tell you what, if I'd chosen a better place to work where I'd have more shifts during school time, I'd have a lot more money and my gear would be much different.
I wish I could say I didn't use some of my gear so that I could sell it and get some money but the only thing I can think of to do that is downgrade my 70-200 but even then, I don't want to. I was mulling over a 40D for ages, I had planned to get it a few months ago but then this 1D classic popped up and I bought it. Like you might have read, I sometimes wish I didn't buy it, or that I should sell both and go to the 40D now. Photography has messed me up so bad

Make up a resume. Name and basic info, address, contact details. Current level of education and where as well as your subjects. I wrote a little paragraph about myself too. Fold it up and put it in an envelope addressed to the manager. Walk into the shop and say 'hello, is it possible that you could give this to your manager?'. Some will say sure, some will say write down your availability times if they're not on the sheet, some will say sorry not at the moment (like me at my shop ). Some bigger companies like Woolies, Coles and Big W will do it by the website and you tick which stores are closest to you.
Also some might not actually need the resume, they might have their own application form which just makes it easier for them as everything is the same and they can follow it much better if a resume hasn't been written properly.

There's a check on name, BSB and account number - if they don't match, then the transfer will be rejected and the funds automatically returned to the originating bank account.

hi deletedpenguin.
you'll probably find me in the overseas passenger terminal at the domestic machines expo - 40D/17-40L, or pulling shots on the Di Bartoli stand - alternatively you're likely to see me @ Mecca's stand in 'the orient' section or back in the overseas terminal @ ECA. Remember that coffee's are $2 a shot, everywhere, which is a good way to try various suppliers if you're a fiend like I am. Unfortuantely, that's double the $1 of last year.
link to aromafest is @ http://www.therocks.com/sydney-Things_To_Do-Aroma_Festival.htm - on from 10 til 5. If I'm around, email me w/ your mobile # & I'll get it on my phone. should be there most of the afternoon.

Use products. Something to stand up. Change the angles, create the shadows. Act as if it's a model (as much as possible ) because you want to see what certain things do to the image when you're shooting people on Monday.

Find some tracing paper and wrap it over the top of the flash with a rubber band so it's like a small softbox, then grab some black paper and wrap that around the outside of the tracing so you're not losing light to the sides.
Or put the flash on a chair, stick some paper onto the back of the chair and bounce it off that. Things like paper are the best diffuser that you can find around the house. This wasn't off camera, but I used an A3 piece of white cardboard and bounced my flash above my left shoulder off it:

:lol: I won't, soon enough canon will bring out stuff that is better than the nikon... that is as long as they stop trying to make it be such a pay more to get more mentality it is now... The AF in the D700 is 4000x better than the 5D2 (okay a bit of an exaggeration ) and it is sealed, mmm that is the thing that really annoys me about canon... Anyways
I really think that maybe at some point I will go to a D800 or whatever it is then if canon doesn't change that...

Cool photos, my favourite is probably 3 for the quality/feel of the light, it is a bit dark feeling... The rest I just find a bit vintage/rustic for me ;)
Fair enough, i guess it is a individual thing.
#1 was a shot that i thought needed the old horror movie treatment, i don't know why just felt it did.
As i said these are just playing around with different techniques so i'm always happy to hear peoples comments.
On that note i am off to bed, training in the morning :(
Night all!

I have bad news,
Today I used a Nikon... AND LIKED IT
Well sort of, I was very confused by it's layout compared to the canon, and he figured out my canon much quicker than I figured out the nikon, but dayme that viewfinder and that LCD
I really don't get why people get so excited about the screen on the back of a body.
:lol: I won't, soon enough canon will bring out stuff that is better than the nikon... that is as long as they stop trying to make it be such a pay more to get more mentality it is now...

Thanks everyone :)
We went with a US presidential theme ...
Josiah = name of fictional president in the West Wing
Barack = name of real president
;)
We also happen to love Josiah as a name, and we're big fans of Obama. Given his presidency commenced in the year of Josiah's birth ... ;)
There I was thinking I was the only person who watched The West Wing in Australia.
Congratulations on the birth of your son, it's a very special time, enjoy :)

Thanks :-)

well although I didn't buy it for the screen, the 5D II screen is quite nice for checking fine focus on while in the field.

It's a massive co-ordinated social gathering (or an excuse for a lot of photographers to end up at a cafe/pub/pancake manor).
There's also prizes for best photo, not that I'm holding out much hope for that, but worth a shot. And it was yesterday, so you missed out.

Because I looked at it and could actually tell sharp focus easily...
I can't do that on my mk III
I know that is business but as an end user, not shareholder, what do you want...
Congrats Luke.

SO I'm probably going to sell my Lenovo X200s laptop. Any takers? :)
Also have an OCZ Vertex 120GB SSD for sale. It's blisteringly fast.
