It's possible the newer drive requires more power than USB can provide. Is the enclosure bus powered or have it's own PSU/power brick ?

There is an automated HDR function... File->Automate->Merge to HDR. It works extremely well sometimes and awfully others.

So I offered my (very cheap) services to an organiser of a gig that was on today. My mates band was playing. They seemed interested but then they said they had enough photographers (I don't think they had more than one or two, most likely didn't pay any). One of them already has some photos up already. Kit lens on the 450D, shooting Tv at 1/10 with flash, f/16, ISO 800. That's in some of the photos.
Why do people constantly pass up me after seeing my photos for people like that? I could have delivered them clear, sharp and clean images that the bands would have been happy with (which is proven as I've shot my mates band before and they've been happy with them). I'm getting sick of trying to shoot the gigs that I want to shoot.

Don't take it personally Glenn... it's the whole industry, it's fecked up something chronic. Same goes with club photography and most event photography in general. Truth of the matter is, a digital SLR is within the reach of most people, and most organisers aren't aware of the impact decent photos have to an event.

Quite simply they don't want to pay. My guess is they haven't used a proper photographer and are happy enough with the results that they get from their current either extremely cheap, or free photographers.

Even if you offered your services for cheap or free, I'm guessing they just assume there are hidden fees somewhere, or that they don't know the full worth of a good picture, and just need someone to get some snapshots up - even if they're blurry or of poor quality.

Yeah definitely. That's why I started contacting people, I wanted to separate myself from the others who seem to turn up and take photos and say 'look at my photos of you playing!'. But none of them 'have the budget for photography'. I've got one guy who works at the local youth centre so his job is centred around helping young people and he has done exactly that. He's given me one opportunity to shoot for experience and then he got in touch with me again and paid me over the person he had been paying because I actually cared and tried to give good results.
Quite simply they don't want to pay. My guess is they haven't used a proper photographer and are happy enough with the results that they get from their current either extremely cheap, or free photographers.
I shot my mates band a few times and gave them good photos. They actually still owe me money but I'm so sick of them. They think they're doing much better than they actually are and they're too good for everyone now. They won some competition so they got a photoshoot for free or something. I'm waiting for the day they put them on their myspace. I'm not expecting much...

Yeah, I am/will. I did enjoy shooting events/music/sport but it's not worth it with how people think. As well as the people in bands who just don't want quality photos, my other mates keep telling me to come to their footy and shoot. All of this is another reason why I invested in the flashes and triggers. I don't have to go out looking for things to shoot or waiting for something to come up, I can just set them up and get going :)

I'm yet to go watch/shoot my mates at their local games. Honestly, I'd rather pay $25, head to a Sydney FC match, have a couple of drinks and shoot some actual action and get my practice there. Not only will I get the practice I need but If I approach or get approached about the shots I've taken they're of more than just your average suburban team.

I took my camera to a few different top level sports. Victory and Storm matches a couple of times but I'm never near the pitch so I ended up just sitting the camera down. I took it to the Boxing Day test 2 weeks after I first got my camera, I enjoyed it then because it was my first experience and I was in a corporate box and all that. Took it to a one dayer last summer and I shot a lot less because I realised that the MCG is massive

It's more than that - non-photographers simply can't see the difference between average work and good work. You've all seen it before - some godawful happysnap that would never have seen the light of day if you'd taken it, happy taking pride of place on someone's computer desktop or in a frame on their tv, and they'd say "aww, such a lovely photo.."

+1, nice shot Fil!
Another one from yesterday.
Cool shot Ed
Don't take it personally Glenn... it's the whole industry, it's fecked up something chronic. Same goes with club photography and most event photography in general. Truth of the matter is, a digital SLR is within the reach of most people, and most organisers aren't aware of the impact decent photos have to an event.
+1, so many many people I encounter simply do not understand a good photo.. Just "OHH COOL, I'M AN OVEREXPOSED BLOB IN THE LEFT CORNER, SWEET" *in idiotically annoying accent*
Bit o' tax from yesterday's trip down south... view accross the bay from Culburra at sunset.

I can't remember (lol) but I think something like that happened to me and I'm perfectly normal... Right?
In other stuff, I am working on a show that is opening on Wednesday night, we were rigging the lights and running cables during dress rehersal today...O.o One of the channels on the dimmer died and a the loom broke (somehow), since it is a sunday all the cables and such are in a room that no one has a key to, so we did what we could and got it sort of working, then found a blown globe, pulled that down, realised the replacement was in the store we couldn't get to so sat around doing almost nothing since we can't program without a proper patch...
It was scheduled to end at 10 but we finished the run through early so the last hour was spent with the actors re-rehersing a dance (to rave music)... There was a thunderstorm that I thought would pass right over us, so I was waiting for the lightning to sound near then this huuuuge bang happens and I press the DBO
After that we got a bit cold so put a 2k frenel on the ground in front of us
Then bored again so tried to see how loud we can get the volume without anyone on stage complaining by going slow
Finally got bored enough to get a profile and do shadow puppets on the roof
Somehow none of the actors or us techies even seem to realise the slight problem that we are no where near done rehearsing and haven't even got the lights half done and there is no more rehearsals until before the first show and that is two days away...

Done em all  Geeze i used to love being a proddy. Love seeing how much it takes to annoy the actors. On one play we had two actors walk into things back stage so we "actor proofed" the lot when they where in the green room (IE: Caution Tape, Some Flashing lights, etc...) that pissed them off a tad
The other is slowly lowering the volume of one of the characters mics during a dress rehersal (If they have thier own wireless mics?) one by one and see how long it takes for them to notice that the sound of thier voice is not making it off the stage
We also had a drama teacher who directed one of the plays who complained it was too dark for him to make his show notes, so one day we rigged a 2k fresnel as a spot directly above his seat for the final 3 dress rehersals.
Also had a student directing a production once complaining the volume from the stage was too low for him during dress so we stuck 2 speakers behind his seat and an amp bellow it... needless to say that was enough volume  He had no idea they where there and was looking around for a few mins as the seating is racked and slides out the wall so the speakers where concealed under that.
If you need any more stupid ideas for dress rehersal fun just let me know

Haha!
I remember the first show we did in this loading dock that some director thought would be a much better stage than the auditorum  (really annoying since we have to put seats up on the stage of the hall) we had construted a quite huge steel seating support thingy and had around 15 1.5k profiles, 8 LED pars, 10 2k fresnels, 6 mac 700s, a wireless mic per actor and 36ch soundesk with a proper highs mids low stacks on either side of the stage all on this little 4*5m loading dock  now for this show we have seating on beanbags and one level of risers, 9 dodgy old old old 500W fresnels, a 2k fresnel with a broken lens, 2 500W profiles, and some crazy ass 1960s looking 2k profile that is unpossible to focus (and isn't used), a dodgy powered sound desk that we had to tape over half the buttons and dials since they were giving us electric shocks:lol:
But all the actors are in yr11/12 so just messing around with them, although the whole cast and crew have got varying degrees of sickness 0.o
We once had a huge show in the hall with a stage probably 40m*10m (in the round), the electrics in the hall are all old and suss so we ran extension cords to everything.... Bad idea  It seemed great when there were just 30 fixtures, but as it grew and grew to eventually being about 600 fixtures the dimmer room was a mess of cables, you couln't walk to switch on the dimmers (which we took extra three phase points from outside the building even to power them) without having to unplug at least four cables that went across the room and the floor was maybe 3/4 of a foot deep in cables
And the FoH bar was dodgy enough that when we hung macs on it and you moved them the whole bar started shaking and gave you the feeling it was all going to come crashing down, so we had to go with just 4 macs for the bits that really needed it and far too many conventionals filling in for movers
Even for that show we got screwed over and had to use a sound desk that is only 24ch in the first place and lost two channels when the roof flooded and caved in on it since the two good ones were being used for music performances  Ever had to re patch wireless mics during the show

In all seriousness, the worst he could do is probably not turn up which isn't too big a problem. You'll be able to inspect the lens, and deal in cash, so it should be a pretty smooth transaction.

Always a bit tense when things like that happen. Our youngest was born with a cleft lip, which meant that he could not suck and as such had issues feeding for the first 3 or 4 months. We spent quite some time in and out of hospital and had a few scary moments.

This is true, something that I'd hear about when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area (on more than one occasion). That usually happened though with a website called Craigslist.

Oh, did you get many nice shots? I forgot you were in rome
Sorry to tell you but yes your not alone  Oh the highs and lows of being in production crew...
 Have you found out what happens when dimmer+rain? It was a show outdoors and there were huge thunderclouds above us, I ask the SM if I should cover the dimmers with a tarp and get a "Nah, she'll be right" response, so the show starts and quarter of the way through it starts pouring, so I put the house lights up and we make an announcement that the show is delayed etc then the house lights start to flicker a bit and I think something is wrong with the lights completely forgetting about the dimmer and refocus two fresnels as house lights, which as I put them up flicker, then realise the dimmer is still in the rain... I go the dimmer to see what has happened to it and it is in a puddle of water on the grass and there is smoke coming out of the top of it... Quickly run to switch off the three phase, the next day we tested it (after it was dry) and short of blown fuses it was like nothing ever happened!
Same show different night, some idiot unplugs the DMX (running around the audience) mid show...
Oh yeah, don't put your script on the keypad of the lighting desk...

Just got back from a firecall.
A local newspaper photographer rocks up and walks straight past us and starts shooting away (really close to the fire and getting our way). I approached him to ask him to move back witha reply from him "How did the fire start". Asked him again and wouldn't so the police had to remove him.
A few minutes later he walks past us again so to get his attention this time I say "What do you shoot with?". He looks at me and goes "12 mega pixels" and keeps walking closer. This time he was escorted back to his car by police.

Classic.
I almost stopped of at a fire down the road, but I was heading somewhere else and decided to give it a miss. When I got back, there was a truck and a helicopter at the scene - lots of smoke, but no visible flames anymore (was on the way out though).

Yeah, i really want to upgrade to a 5D over a 50D now.
Tough decisions to make in the future, although saying that i have a long time before i can afford either so i got a good amount of time to think it through.
Edit: If anyone is selling their 5DmkI in the next few months let me know and i'll see if i could afford it yet.
Cool I look forward to seeing how they came out :)
Just finished the Basic edit (exposure, levels etc etc) and will probably do the actual editing tomorrow as a have basketball tonight.
Going through the photo's i can already see my mistakes in which i will have to improve on for next time. Things like keeping the background light even was my biggest problem, and it didn't help when i accidentally put the camera to f22 without realizing it.

Hey there Phil,
I have all the stuff ready to go, just waiting for hubby to read through the fine print to make sure I haven't missed anything vital. It was a great quote though, less than $400 a year. My son has been sick so that has taken priority over the last few weeks and I haven't had the brainpower to think about it to get it finalized.
Anna decided at the last minute to leave the MPE and go for the 100-400 instead (extremes huh!). I'm glad she decided that way as the MPE is such a specialty lens and she will get more use from the 100-400....she only has a 60 2.8 at the moment and 10-22. She still needs another $400 to buy a second hand 100-400 but they don't come up very often. She amazes me with her staying power as far as saving goes....most girls her age waste their hard earned money on clothes, but not Anna, she'll take 'glass' any day.
Here's a pic she took with the 10-22 and my new NDX400 filter. Won her first place in our Camera Club monthly comp. Topic this month was 'Local Landscape". Very proud mum I am.:D

Hayley, all my mates tell me I'm crazy for spending so much on photography when they're saving for cars, spending money on grog for nights out and funnily enough, clothes. But I think I've just gotten a car for nothing (though I'll pay for rego and insurance and all that) so I'm all good :)

Cracking shot, and congrats to her on the comp win. She's right about the MPE, but I guess it depends how much time you spend shooting macro too.
As for the insurance, who'd you end up going with? Was it the second mob protectsure, or that first photographyinsurance place?

Yeah... it's just not worth it because it's not what I really want. I'm not going to bother trying to go for what I planned because as I said, I'd rather wait it out and go for a 5D to have that combo.
Hayley, all my mates tell me I'm crazy for spending so much on photography when they're saving for cars, spending money on grog for nights out and funnily enough, clothes. But I think I've just gotten a car for nothing (though I'll pay for rego and insurance and all that) so I'm all good :)
Would you still be selling the 2.8? :)
Hazey

Phil...went for 'photographers insurance'. The other crowd were quite a lot more expensive.
Regarding the macro lens...she uses the 60 macro with three tubes and gets close enough to keep her happy for now. I still think she will get the MPE, but at $8 an hour on Saturdays only, she may be 18 before she has enough dosh.:D
Having said that, she has sold a few shots in the local gallery of late so maybe it won't take so long.

Pricey indeed. I've shifted towards them just because they are underwritten by Chubb, one of my dad's mates who owns an Elders thinks they'll be a little more lenient with things...I'm so unorganised though, it'll take me months to sort something out. lol

Bah, I called 5 different Optus stores in search of an iPhone.. nothing at all in stock. Am heading up to the local one now to get on the waiting list.
That's why people are trying to sell their 3G-S for $1000 because of the stock shortage...

You can get a 16GB iPhone 3G for $0 upfront on a $49 cap: http://www.optus.com.au/home/index.html
I'd be going for that right now if my contract was up for renewal.

Yeah it's the 3G. Apple discontinued the 16GB 3G so Optus are clearing out their stock. The 8GB 3G is the cheapest option, then it goes to the 16GB 3G-S and then 32GB 3G-S is top of the line.

Oh yeah, don't put your script on the keypad of the lighting desk
No but been very close to leaving a Mac 2000 in the rain... Also had safety inspectors make a call at a bad time while rigging a fly over for Peter in our Production of Peter Pan... Some twit had the idea of going up in the harness to focus a light rather then pulling out a ladder just as a safety inspector walked in  Had to quikly pretend he was peter in flight training

I think the only reason the iPhone is up there is because of the way it's made. It's so easy to take a photo and upload it with an app. No other phone is like that, no other phones are used for that  It is interesting though.

I have 2 x ND1000 filters in my hand, i wonder whatr happens if you double stack them? hahah maybe i can do that 1/2 hour exposure after all.
Unfortunately i need to send one away to a fellow POTN member who may just PM me his address shortly. DOnt worry it will be unopened and un-tampered with/or double stacked.
edit: this filter is crazy, i can hardly see through it, too good! hahahah. hmm gotta stop having 3 glasses of wine before dinner, going a bit wack.

Tax time for me, from a visit to Warrumbungle Observatory. They let you connect up your camera to the big telescope and get some shots. Very cool! Had a little problem focussing though, I guess for proper results you'd need more time.

Ok, so I have an NDX400, and it's pretty darned dark (8.5 stops), just what is an ND1000 ???

As it's been said, that's just the 3G. On that $49 cap plan, the handset it an additional $13/$19 (for the 16/32gb 3Gs).. This arvo after calling all of those stores, I went to the one at Castle Towers to reserve the 32GB phone. I'm next on the list, and it should arrive within the week.. (hopefully ).

ND1000 is a 10 stop Neutral Density, it has 0.01% Transmittance and an optical Density value of 3.0.
So basically same as yours just a stop and a half darker, i have 2 of them here (one is for Dan) and im trying to resist the urge of stacking them together, hahaha (evil laugh)

Nikon shooters :x
Wow, what an idiot!
Should have accidentially drenched him or something, that would stop him from being stupid again ;)
Hey All.
Just got home from my studio shoot today which was so much fun.
I loved the studio and will admit it was a bit challenging but it was great fun.
I got to use the studio's 5DmkI and 24-105 which are incredible to work with. I don't want to touch my 400D anymore, it just wont live up to the standard!
Uploading the photo's now so should have them done by at least tomorrow i reckon.
Cool, would be good to see the results ;)
