TBH thats what's stopping me from getting one. If the 1D4 ends up anywhere near todays price i'll be all over it like a rash since if you figure in the price of a grip and battery for the 5D2 its not a huge price difference.

You need to work for a publication or website or something similar. I've obtained a media pass once because the show I wanted to shoot was organised by a Government-funded youth group and the guy I spoke to (and still talk to now) was really good about giving young people opportunities. He ended up choosing me over the other photographer he had at the show for another gig and I was paid that time :) But that was definitely a rare chance for me... I'll need to get a job with the local paper or a magazine to get more opportunities like that.

Definitely. Apparently Apple always release things in the first or second week of September... if only I was a fanboy then I would have known it and waited!
Just remembered the other opportunity I got... my mum rang a few people and eventually she got hold of the media manager of the Melbourne Storm and he gave me the opportunity to shoot a practice match from the sidelines at the start of the year. Didn't go further than that though... unfortunately

Worse from a placement point of view yes. They are closer to the centre. I much prefer the layout of the 30/40/50D. Not as good as the 1D3:p. Be interested to add in the 7D. I might hunt for a 7D raw file and add that into the mix also.

My 12 year old son injured his knee again this morning at school. While walking up some the stairs to class and he felt a sharp pain in it. He's had 2 knee reconstructions, first was cartilage and the second cartilage and rebuilding his ACL. The last op was almost two years ago and in that time he's been into soccer and basketball. He's never hurt it playing sport, always just something simple as walking up stairs.
Now we wait a few days and see how it goes. No major swelling but he can't put much pressure on it.

Yeah, I've known about the placement differences for awhile. I was more interested in the AF speed/accuracy. In other words, many people bashed the 5D II earlier on due to having 'essentially the same AF' as the 5D and I was wondering if that's actually true.

On the teeth front, I must have been in year 1 when I was out on a "walk" with the rest of the family. I saw "walk", cause my brother and I were on our little bikes, training wheels and all (with our parents just walking behind). Nearing the end of the walk, my brother and I had this smart idea to race down the (what I now realise is, a minor) hill. Did I mention those training wheels? So they got entangled, and over the handlebars I went. A majority of one of my two front teeth is now fake..

Well I have the 1D3 and the 5D2, and I can tell you the 5D2 sucks however way you look at it, when you have a 1D3 to compare it to

Bloody kids suck sometimes. My 2 year old managed to fall and smash his face on a brick window sill today putting his top front right tooth through his bottom lip and knocking the tooth clean out. Put it back in but no go it wouldn't stay so he now has a tooth missing:mad: let's just say mum and nan and grandad who were looking after him at the time are pretty upset but he couldn't care less.
That's no good :( But typical for kids though.
Well as a sports camera, the 5DII makes a beautiful portrait camera :P
Yes, the AF is nowhere near 1 series quality, yes it does suck somewhat for moving targets, but for what it was designed to do, I find it works fine.

I pretty much only use centre point. It can track, as evidenced by some of the bird shots I've taken, but compared to a 1D it pales greatly.
These are all 5DII shots, a good mix of subjects and as you can see some action shots.

This is the exact moment (well..maybe a microsecond before) that the Victorian Women's Beach Flags champion was decided.
Sitting there a metre or so from the flag (the hosepipe), with fit, fast people belting towards you at a great rate of knots was a bit of a struggle for AF on the the poor little 400D, but it managed OK a lot of the time.

I never shoot sports, let alone fast action. Usually just landscapes, food and portraits. You're probably groaning "Well of course the 5D II's AF will be fine for that!" - just that I've been spoilt by the 50D's AF. Everyone also keeps mentioning 1D, well I've hardly had any experience with 1D-series cameras so I'm not too worried about that (can't really miss what I've never had). :p
I'm expecting at worst, the 5D II's peripheral points are as responsive as the 30D's.. and that's okay, but would be a bit of a dissappointment for a camera which costs so much.

So I got t-boned today, but a 51 year old amputee who ran a stop sign. Her prosthetic foot was under the brake pedal, and she tried to brake, but it was stuck. She had no idea what it was as she couldn't feel her prosthetic leg..
My 1989 diahatsu charade (RIP) is written off.
She hit me in the drivers side, causing me to spin, up over a traffic island, killing a stop sign as I went over the island and landing on the nature strip backwards, as her car pushed me she ended up crashing into a light pole.
I was not hurt at all (suprisingly considering the point of impact) and I jumped out straight away and ran to her car, she stumbled out, said "Oh no, I'm not insured" and then fell on the ground, cigarette still in hand and passed out.
was a pretty wierd day, I'm more annoyed at the fact that I have absolutely no money saved up and won't have a car for a while, luckily though, my parents have a few cars I can drive for the time being..

Not sure what the ACT rules are, but in S.A third party (property) is not compulsory.......
If you have comprehensive insurance on your car then your insurance company will just pay to fix your car and chase her for the $$'s and you won't lose your no-claim bonus.
Of course, if you don't have insurance, and she doesn't either, and we're talking a 1989 Charade (I had an original 1980 (G10) one :) ) then, realistically, it'll probably cost you more in court and lawyer costs then the car is worth !! >:( >:(

Got it out of the bag last night after not using it for a few weeks and its dead as a door nail. No power going through it at all, with or without the grip. Tried the removing the date/time battery thing but no luck. Of course out of warranty and had only put 12,000 shots through it.
Looks like I will be shooting film for a while.
Is the battery charged? ;)

That sucks. Gonna send it in to Canon? Could be a loose wire or something like that.
I dont know yet, maybe. Kind of an excuse to upgrade, but I cant afford to right now.
Have dads 5D, my old 20D that he has now and his 1000D that he uses for astro stuff to get me by if I need.

Yes :p
Batteries were fully charged and tried most of dads ones as well. Still no luck.
One weird thing that did happen before it died completely was the direct print button kept flashing for ages while the rest of the camera did nothing. Googled it and came up with nothing though...

That's unlucky Sam. Random way for it to die. You could get a couple of hundred if you sold it for parts, that could get you closer to a new body?

My camera clicked over from 9999 to 0000 just now, too. Should have reset filename count when I got this camera :x

Three light portrait.
Blue walls are cool. I mean, where at home would you find a blue wall?!
(was the function room at a hotel)

G'day! I guess I should've posted here earlier... the Melbourne meet up thread seems slow:p
For those of you in Melbourne, how often do you guys/gals meet up?
There's a huge possibility atm of moving over later in the year (or in January 2010) with my family and it will be good to meet up. I still have yet to get the formal offer from my prospective employer but seems like it is a done deal. (then again, nothing is "done" till I get my paw print on the contract!) If all goes to plan, we're packing up in October/November but waiting for my 2 boys to finish off school.
Any tips which suburbs in Melbourne I should avoid? TIA.
Cheers
