Freight is the killer. The 5 x 2GB cards for $50 doesnt involve a rebate, its a sale price. Any takers for a group buy to share the postage cost?

Id be interested. Ive misplaced a few CF cards so i need some more.

Brilliant!!! I got the 1555 too, so their babies will be normal instead of mutated freaks...

It's actually awesomely good and the bulid feels and looks great. I don't know why you would be putting down a laptop that broke after being dropped. I would expect no less. I'm gentle with my gear and I can't see myself having any problems with it. Well, apart from hating Windows, which I already do. What's this anti virus crap anyway, give me OSX back!!! :p

Anyway, our laptope shall meet, Colin, and make love in the moonlight, all night long, while we watch together, spooning in the back of Clarence's Liberty. He will take pictures to share with this wonderful community.

Oh, and Luke, Star Trek does look good, I agree. It's causing a horrible noise in the background behing me, for those ungreatful patrons who pay $16 a ticket and think they own the place.

Why the hell am I ranting anyway?

Colin, maybe our Laptops can watch Star Trek together. They can sit in the back row, we all know what goes on there. :p

TRA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA

Zomg, yours arrived already? Mine took 6 weeks to arrive.. (thanks to Dell being short on parts and the courier in Sydney screwing up TWICE.)

Btw, that's some nice laptop porn novelisation there. :)

New Star Trek movie (as a complete Star Trek and sci-fi noob) is pretty cool.

I'm seeing it tomorrow night. :) As a Trekkie and a sci-fi fan, I hope this lives upto expectations! Glad the non-trekkies are enjoying it too.. looks like they've succeeded in making the multi-decade franchise accessable to a wider audience.

I'm thinking I will spring for the PWs or a prime than go with the RPs....
After reading up it seems the first gen RP was a bit of a stop gap until the second gen, which is more expensive than the PWs.....

Hey gang,

Went on drive this avo. Ended up in Manly again for sunset. Was kind of near the North Head, but not really.

Just got home, Cooked up a nice Scotch fillet (Wrapped in bacon too - Fillet Mignon style) with crunchy sweet & potato pieces, grilled zucchini and a tomato salsa. All washed down with a nice NZ Sav Blanc.

Anyways, pics soon.

Edit: I also saw my first school (?) of dolphin too! Was awesome! Didn't have my zoom with me though.

Picture #1 does remind me of summer sunsets - all orange and cloudless. I assume that the star effect is not from a filter but just the way it turned out?

Picture #2 is another of those pictures that reflects my non creativity when it comes to composition. The mundane becomes interesting.

I did have a GND filter on, no star filter though. I was happy I didn't get any lens flare too. I left my hood at home.

#2 was another got to the location and just tried something out, the sunset was nice, but a little...less dramatic than I wanted.

What do you need the most that you can afford first?

I don't strictly speaking need any of it, but I want all of it...
I might be under some illusion that if I try a prime then I will never stop using them, but that seems to be true with quite a few people I know..
The flash stuff I probably will get the least opportunity to use, unless I get into shooting people, which could happen sometime soon....
:confused::confused:

Okay, after thinking logically for a while, my three zooms have me covered for almost anything I shoot/could really shoot FL/aperture wise with the ISO of the mk III and the light I generally shoot in...
For shooting people my one flash does not cover me well at all, so flash stuff I think it might be....

You're not missing out on anything if you don't feel the need for it ;)

Let that define where you allocate your money.

I only need the primes I'm using because I'm working as a pro and refuse to use flash when shooting candidly (except at receptions). Whatever light there is (or isn't), I have to be able to "work it". If that's not true for you, don't splurge.

That is sort of me....
although I think wireless TTL and 2 flashes might change that......
I was convinced that primes had some magical quality to them :p:lol:
(and shouldn't have tried a 135 that convinced me at f2 :()

But as I said, the zooms work fine for what I do, but my flash stuff doesn't work for people, and I wouldn't mind starting that (to learn more)...

Gotcha,I to thought I wanted all of it then I sat myself down and really thought about what I would shoot the most and go with what covered that.
With that my kit will end up like this one day,as per sig and a 24-105L,a macro, some good flashes for off camera and maybe a 70-200L.

I had a go with my 1D classic on Friday night shooting hockey under lights. I could not believe it... The lights look fine to the eye, obviously not as bright as other stadiums like for AFL and NRL, but the best I was getting, while one stop underexposed, 1/250, f/2.8 at ISO 3200. I didn't shoot at 3200 the whole time so I struggled. Enjoyed the AF and FPS even if I didn't use it so much ;)

Yep, I'd have done the same as well. Makes life a LOT easier.

The team i was shooting for was running the wrong way to do that effectively. (I was only there for first half, simply to drop something off to another photographer) Plus i wanted to see what i could try with the harsh rim lighting.

Anyone know what postage (cost) would be like for the Op/Tech Pro Loop Strap? It's US$16 but I'm not sure. I don't like the strap that came with my 1D classic, it doesn't feel strong and it's a bit worn.

Edit: From the Pro Camera Gear shop that POTN uses.

On my monitor only #1's face looks too dark, if i exposed for shadow the motion blur would have been too much. I rather like the effect for what its worth, not something ide do all that often though.

what "effect"? there is no effect. they're both under-exposed, too dark, whatever you want to call it :p and if your gear couldn't get you a good exposure for the shadows, you were doing it wrong. no excuses when you have that gear list and are studying photography, mate ;)

Depends on the reach you require.
I have a Canon 70-200F4L IS and a Sigma 150-500 F5/F6.3 OS.
The Canon has better IQ but the Sigma has the reach. Similar $$$$

edit: Just checked your sig and you have both these ranges covered. What area do you think you are lacking? (other than talent LOL)

Depends. There's a few options. A 70-200 is good for close action and just outside the 50. A 100-400 would be good for action a bit further away but it's a slow lens so your ISO would have to be bumped up some days. A 70-200 + TC isn't out of the question. If you want to spend a lot on a great lens not just for kids footy, the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 is brilliant. Pop a 1.4x TC on there and you get an even longer f/4. IIRC, Mic uses this and loves it for footy.

Edit: Completely forgot you had a 70-200 and the Sigma. Considering you just had a go today/yesterday, I'd say keep shooting for a few weeks and then decide what it is that's lacking.

Boucher, if you had the 100 f/2 then I'd be talking to you :p

Al, hard to work with horses, nice image.

Heh, difficult working on the beach. I wish I had someone to assist as I really wanted to use a softbox or shoot through but the wind even the slight one that was blowing was making it a complete arse to use so I ended up going bare speedlites.

Throw in the first time for the horses and a little spray....poo.

However next time it'll be the second time for the horses and we'll have a double float and a Patrol to borrow instead of renting.

Nice work Al, but looks a little underexposed over here.

Yeap. A new experience for everyone but I did take a lot from it and hope to apply it all in my future shots.

A couple more.

Ok just re calibrated my monitor (Tells me its been close to 3 months since i last did... surprising) And #1 looks alot more under exposed then it did before. I didn't want to blow the highlights as #1 the highlight is his face.

The "effect" i was after was to have the players face positioned in the highlight and have most of the rest of the image fall to dark, didn't entirely work now i look on a calibrated monitor.

Unfortunately I have my doubts about the veracity of the..'doing a photography degree at uni..'

Are you trying to say you don't believe im doing a photography degree?

Its already been mentioned that i was offered a place at a number of uni's to do a BA Photo course including RMIT in which only small handful of direct out of school students get offered each year, a position i deferred to take up next year. Study Routine is not very interesting, ive had a few assignments all shot on film and not scanned so hard to show here (Plus they where purely to show technical ability with film not aesthetic quality so nothing all that special)

Uni is incredibly different to school but its a difference everyone has heard about so why mention it over again??

I think you're aiming too high, personally. I shot some kids' soccer last year and found that my 70-200 was a litte short, but I can't see you really needing 400. In fact the 70-200/2.8 is considered *the* lens for that type of work. You just need to position yourself well and shoot was comes within range, and accept you can't shoot the whole park from the one spot.

The 300 f4L IS maybe? Not the 400 you are talking about, but the focus is damn fast and f4 isnt too bad to work with. Although with the 70-200, maybe try a 1.4x t-con first?

You using the1Ds or the 300D?
The 300D makes your 70-200 2.8 effectively a 320mm 2.8 - just add a 1.4 teleconverter and its 420mmF4

I know some people shoot sports with primes, but franky I'll be damned if I know how. *way* too limiting. Personally I'd go for either 70-200 or maybe 100-400 (not especially fast, and not constant-aperture, but still a fine lens .)

Its frustrating at first, but you soon get used to it and learn to position yourself in the right spots and preempt the action.

If I was shooting local club stuff on a "budget" though, Id take two 40Ds, one with a 300 f4L on a monopod (and maybe a 1.4x t-con) and the other with a 70-200 of some sort. Just to cover the action a fair way away and the closer stuff as well.

I'm using a 70-200 f2.8 and have recently started using a Kenko 2x TC.

I'm undecided about the TC.

It allows me to cover much more of the field and when it works well, it's brilliant, but have to say, I am finding my keeper rate has gone down.

This may be also to do with the fact that last year, I was using the much lighter 70-200 f4 and with the heavier lens + TC, camera shake is more of a problem, especially if light is not too flash, like the last 2 rounds of soccer and footy !

Some results are below and a couple of full sets shot with this gear can be seen on my Picasaweb album (linked in my sig). Mine is the maniac in the green boots !

This definitely worked for me last season. I've found that with kid's matches, play often ends up in one end too, so that can be handy, especially if the angle of the sun works in your favour as well.

The TC I am using now gives more coverage at the expense of a lower keeper rate due to increased (or more visible due to lower shutter speeds with the 5.6 aperture) camera shake, slower AF etc.

I may try a monopod, or only bring out the TC on bright days.

I feel your pain too but I've only just looked at them this morning. I do hate you and your talent. :)

However, I do like the great colours you have elicited out of the rocks and vegetation (post processing or close to natural?) and amazing water colour.

Who's the statue?

(These can also be my weekend's tax....)

Great action shots. Unfortunately, all my sports shots are indoors stuff and look bland. Make me wish I had kids and could get out to sports events each weekend but such is life.

Went out to continue my timelapse project tonight, and after I was done, took a couple of night landscapes. Here's one:

And now, methinks, it's time to crawl into the nice warm bed.
I like the little hint of star trails in this. Just after sunset or is the background lighting just as a result of the time lapse?
