If anyone's interested in a Sigma 24-70/2.8 for Canon (obviously :p) there's one on the Melbourne flickr for $500. Seems to only want local though. Would be a good purchase though, that Sigma is regarded as high as the L.

Howdy, All! Remember me? April has been nutso. What have I missed?

I went to dawn service this morning and it was pitch freakin' black until virtually the whole thing was over. I got this series as everyone was leaving...ISO 3200, 1/25, 2.8 hand holding the 70-200 ... and it still needed a touch more light. Ah well, it's moody :)

Well that was a huge day of birding...

Started off before dawn listening to the Dawn Service on the radio on the way to North Pine Dam.

Met the others at the dam, shot the sunrise, and a fair number of birds (many yet to process). Went back to my place, had a coffee and biccie, wandered down the road to see what was about. Climbed around the creek, didn't see anything, wandered back up and found the Rainbow Bee-Eaters are back.

Borrowed Allan's 600/4L + 2.0x TC and whacked on my 1.4x TC as well for a total focal length of 1680mm, and shot this:

Evening everyone. Nice ANZAC photos for everyone that's posted them :)

Well, my day started at 330am this morning - I was a cenotaph guard member at the Castle Hill Dawn Service. It was also the last time that I'll be doing guard with cadets (I turn 20 next month, so I have to leave cadets) :( . It was surreal.. I think there must have been at least 1000 people watching us this morning.

After that we went into the city to meet up with the rest of the cadets for the city march. Angus managed to find me lol, and ended up taking some pics while I marched past him. Shall be interesting to see what I looked like..

What a night I had! Well, not so much the night as the evening.

Went into the city to go to the Storm game while the Bombers game was at three quarter time as we parked. I decided to try the MCG and I found a passout on the ground so I went in and watched the last quarter! What a finish!

The Storm game was terrible though. 14 all was disappointing and the injury to Quinn wasn't great.

Yeah it took a little practice to be able to find the bird with the camera, but once there, locking the tripod head in place did the trick. Manual focus too, since wide open it was f/11 and even a 1 series body won't AF at that let alone my 5DII.

i only took about 5 shots as it's not really the place to be taking photos imho.

I disagree.

Without photos, memories fade.

We photographers play a vital role in creating images that tell the truth about our communities. Our photos form a critical part of what I'll call the "collective narrative of our time". IMO, this makes very few things too sacred to be photographed. Including remembrances of horrific, selfless loss of life for our benefit.

That's my thought on this, anyway. Any other opinions?

BTW, I didn't make it to a dawn service this year. Keen to next year tho.

(snipped for brevity)

I agree completely. I shot last year's Samford ceremony and march, but didn't make it to this years one. The key to shooting sensitive things is to be sensitive about it. Don't run around half cocked shooting everything that moves, don't make a nuisance of yourself, and be respectful.

Even more of an amazing shot now that you mention the technique!

Thanks Al :)

BTW, I didn't make it to a dawn service this year. Keen to next year tho.

I don't think i worded that correctly. I should have added using my flash while it was still dark i didn't feel comfortable with but the rest of the day i don't have any drama's with.

Guys, seriously?

Richmond just won and no one has said anything??

Mic i was expecting something!

I was at the game and Richmond deserved their win.

I'm gutted by the disgraceful performance of North last night it was truly horrific.

Hopefully I'll salvage something good from the weekend tonight when I see/shoot Eagles of Death Metal.

Bit of tax from me. Just thawing out after the first round of junior footy.

The wind was OK, the horizontal rain was OK, but when it became horizontal hail, they abandoned the match at the end of the 3rd quater.

Actually for most of the time, they were right into it...first match of the season and all.

I must admit, I did wonder if we could all be done for child abuse sending them out in it :p

I was going to compose some food photography last night but the spinach and lettuce were crying out from under the freshly fried lamb steaks, "Eat us now before we wilt!"

I really must cook things I don't want to eat so I can shoot them.

Well, every machine I've bought recently, including more than a dozen Vostro laptops (which are consumer grade, btw) Vostro 420 desktops, and one Studio 15 laptop as recently as about 2 weeks ago.

Dell has a 12" with some general specs for $850 on their website I think. I was/am considering getting one and upgrading the RAM and HDD for something more portable.

Edit: 12" for $899 (http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-12?c=au&cs=audhs1&l=en&s=dhs) while the 10" is $849. (http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-10?c=au&cs=audhs1&l=en&s=dhs)
