View Full Version : Skyport RX transmitter question...

I'm hoping someone who owns the skyport RX transmitter can help me out. I'm wondering if the mini-sub port (next to the hotshoe) transmits a signal....or whether it only receives one.

I'm hoping to buy a cord from Lon over at flashzebra.com that is a sub-mini to 1/8" mono (for the ABR800), so that I can bypass the pc-sync cords altogether! My only concern is that the sync port only receives a signal, rather than transmitting one as well.

I sold my 580EX II, so I can't test this with the included mini-sub to pc-sync cord.....but I imagine someone who owns the skyport rx might.

(I couldn't find the answer in any documentation, but I've certainly been fooled before)

thanks!

I own the Skyport TX transmitter and RX recievers. I use that port to connect my Lightmeter to it to trigger the flashes, so it only recieves signal from a sync port.

When you have a flash (or a strobe) plugged into that sync port at the foot of the Skyport transmitter and you press the Test button, it does trigger the flash. However, it doesn't look like the hotshoe contacts of the transmitter is tied directly to this port because triggering the transmitter with the camera does not trigger the flash connected to the sync port. In order words, you won't be able to do what you're hoping you can do with it.

thank your sir. not what I hoped to hear, but certainly a definitive answer.

I guess I just can hide from good ol' pc-sync. Oh well, hopefully lon's screwlock pc-sync cords are better than the generics....I'm sure they are.

On my Skyport universal transmitters, the 2.5mm (I think) jack is for connecting an external switch to trigger the radio signal. That's how I connect my Sekonic L-358 to the transmitter when I want to trigger the lights by pushing the "go" button on the meter.

I suspect the jack may be connected in parallel with the test button which would explain why the test button would trigger a flash unit plugged into the jack.

If I wanted to trigger a ringlight, a screwlock PC cord would be my method of choice.

I've always been hesitant to pc-sync cords because they seem to be the only cord I ever own that shorts/dies on me for (seemlingly) no reason. The fact that they sell pc-sync conditioners doesn't bode well for that connection, in general!

Since I traded my pw's away, I haven't had a way to trigger my ringflash now that my old cords wont fit in the skyport.

Lon's already emailed me to confirm the order and to tell me it'll ship on monday. Always impressive! :p

Hey Jeff,

Lon's screwlock cables are excellent and better than the generics, in my opinion.
