So I've been looking at picking up a 50mm, and have pretty much settled on Canon's 1.4 version, but while reading some reviews I've noticed that its pretty soft wide open, was originally released back in 1993. So my question is, does anyone know of an 1.4 II version in the works? I've been told Canon is working on a 100-400 II lens, but I personally haven't heard anything on a 50mm 1.4 II.

What do you guys think? If one is on the way then I'll definitely wait, since I'm not in a huge hurry to get my hands on one.

The 100-400 II rumor has been out for YEARS and we have not seen anything. I have not heard anything of a 50 1.4 II either.

Canon tends to not saying anything until just before it is released.

They don't even tell the reps before hand. They pertty much just say, here is the link to the press release that will be posted in this many hours.

My 50/1.4 is decently sharp wide open, but Canon could improve the USM. Positive reviews of the new Sigma 50 may force Canon to upgrade.

The thing is the DOF is narrow (I agree it is reasonably sharp wide open), so it's very easy to make a focusing mistake with this lens.

Also, my needs a touch AF micro focus adjust, or whatever it is, but I haven't gotten around to doing it yet (not properly anyway).

How about..... a 85mm f/1.4 :)

50mm - f/1.8 - f/1.4 - f/1.2
85mm - f/1.8 - f/1.4 - f/1.2

Nice idea... it seems to me the longer a lens gets the "harder" it is to get a nice wide aperture.

I'd snap up a 85 1.4 though. :)

I can definately say the 50mm f/1.4 was a pretty soft bugger wide open...

i definitely think there will be a new 50/1.4 soon ... the reason is because Sigma has one and stealing the business from Canon.

Sigma Nikon and Pentax all do actually, its not just Sigma..

Only Sony and Canon don't yet..

I think hk300's point is that Nikon and Pentax lenses don't fit very well on Canon cameras, so it doesn't matter what they do. The Sigma does fit Canon cameras, and it is taking business from Canon.

I tied a Sigma 50 1.4 and a 85 1.8 and 35 f/2 today.

I may have had some bad luck (I did try two 85 1.8 copies).

All sucked  I didn't expect much from the Sigma, but it just didn't focus well at all. The 35 f/2 was better.

Both 85 1.8 copies failed to impress (though they were better than the Sigma 50) and the 35 f/2 was surprisingly good (dare I say equal to or better than the 85mm).

?!?!?!! I can understand the sig50 to some extent (I will get one eventually, if I find I use 50 more), but the 85 failed to impress on two different copies? is your camera body broken?

LOL no my cam is working perfectly, it just wasn't as sharp as I though it would be. It was better than the Sigma, but not that great at all (I think my old 100 2.8 macro and 200 2.8L spoil me a bit, those lenses are super awesome).

I admit the 85 is pretty good for the price. A real bargain. Maybe I'm just picky. But on FF I would get a 135L instead (actually I will one day).

I'm telling you, L lenses really do affect how you see lenses. It's really terrible.

FYI the 85 showed the "ghosting" effect you get when something is a little OOF when I shot something at a distance at f/1.8. I won't buy a prime unless I can use it wide open (what's the point otherwise). :D

My 16-35 is sharper.

OK OK, I take it back. After looking at the 85mm photos again. They are pretty darn good. I was shooting at 800 ISO on my 5D in a store. They are more than sharp enough.

I take it all back. The 85 1.8 is VERY good for the price. I'm considering buying one again (just not today). :)

Yes, any good news on this?

Someone broke my 50mm 1.4 and I really want to repair/replace it soon.:( It's one of my most used lens. I'm about to break down and buy a Siggy

Buy the Siggy

Right now given market trends if the updated 50mm f/1.4 drops it will likely be around $500 anyways

The Siggy is $440 used to $500 new...

If you buy it and in six months the new Canon drops, you'll have paid about $10/month to have the Siggy

You'll also have HAD the Siggy to use and take pictures with...Even if the price dropped a bit more because of the Canon launching or Sigma's prices dropping a bit, i doubt it will go far below $400, You'll still have had the lens for half a year and gotten to enjoy and use it, and even if the Canon dropped theres no guarantee its better than the Sigma!

It could be next month or it could be years before Canon replaces the EF 50/1.4... Or they might never update it.

They have some reasons to do so (as noted, the success of the Sigma 50/1.4, also the Zeiss now in Canon mount, plus adapters to use various older manual focus lenses, plus competitors updating their own "standard" lenses). And, Canon has long called the 50/1.4 their "reference" lens, although they don't mention that a whole lot any more.

Who knows if Canon actually will take the leap or not, when they might do so, or if they do that a new version will be significantly different or improved over the current version. Canon is very good at keeping things quiet until they want the world to know.

So, frankly, it's silly to wait for a "new version".

I'm actually more interested to see if Sigma comes out with an 85/1.4 HSM, to compliment their 50/1.4, as has been rumored. It would make a lot of sense and offer an alternative to the Canon 85/1.2L or 85/1.8 (which is a decent lens optically, if anything just a bit plasticky like most mid-grade Canon EF). Presently the only alternatives in Canon mount are the manual focus Vivitar Series 1 (also branded under one or two other names) and Zeiss manual focus 85mm in ZE mount.

I'd also really like to see Sigma update their 20mm, 24mm and 28mm f1.8 lenses (personally speaking... especially the 24mm, I'm happy with Canon 20/2.8 but not their choices of 24/1.4L or 24/2.8 non-USM). I notice the current versions of Sigma's f1.8 trio are all marked "discontinued" on Amazon, although they're still in stock and selling. Wouldn't mind if new versions were f2 lenses, if they were a little more compact.

But, Sigma isn't asking me for advice. And neither is Canon. ;-)

I am expecting Sigma will come up with an 85/1.x. They went from 30/1.4 to 50/1.4 and 85/1.4 is a logical next step.

As for the canon 50/1.4, I believe an upgrade is overdue considering the competition. I am happy with the IQ of my 50/1.4, but upgrades should include ring USM and internal focussing.
