i've heard very bad reviews about the canon sf18-55 lense included in the eos 20d kit, but the other good ones are very expensive and I'm new to photography, so probly this lense is enough for me, but I'm just wondering if anyone has some pictures taken with this camera and lens so that I can see how far i can get and what i can expect. lol

another concern, does the lens manufactured in different country matter? ie. japan or china

thanx

Have a look at pbase.com , you can search by lens type. It's an ok lens, you might want to upgrade later.

Country of manufacture don't make any difference IMO, so long as quality control's done correctly. Japan has a better reputation for quality than china, but I don't look at that when I buy a lens.

Here's my small sample gallery. They were only resized from the originals using PSE 2.0

I believe Canon is a company based out of Japan. I think they do have manufactuering in the USA just because of the market. There are many camera companies, but few lens manufactuerers and Canon is both. Sony, Kodak, Casio do not make lenses, they don't even make cameras. They slap their name on someone else's stuff where Canon does it all in house.

As for the 18-55 EFS, the only bad reviews it gets is from professional users who think the world is only made of expensive lenses. For the price and focal range it is an extreme value and produces very good images.

The 18-55mm lens, especially the USM version, is a fine wide angle lens.
Lots of images from that LENS (<no E ;)) and others at http://www.pbase.com/cameras/canon

I agree. Obviously a serious pro probably wouldn't want to admit to ever using such a lense, but I have had some very good prosumer results with my kit lense. Even with the 1.6 crop factor, the field of view is still pretty good.
