OK, so I'm about ready to get a new set of rechargeable batteries and I've got a question. (I'm borrowing a 580exII soon for a wedding)

I see some like these Sony's that are 2700mah... http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BCG-34HRMF4-Battery-Rechargeable-Batteries/dp/tech-data/B0002IOIMQ/ref=de_a_smtd

and I also see that everyone loves the Sanyo Eneloop hybrids (which are 2000mah).... http://www.amazon.com/SANYO-eneloop-Pre-Charged-Rechargeable-Batteries/dp/B000IV2WAW

With the sony's rated at 2700 and quick to recharge, why are people so in love with the Eneloops? Does them being hybrid help out with anything else? Would the Sony's really last longer or recycle faster?

I use Sanyo Eneloops, they basically hold their charge longer than others when used
on and off over time.
Search the forum, a guy did a thorough test on AA batteries...

so the eneloops are just better for holding their charges. So i'd probably rather find some good batteries with the higher mAH right?

Soo Young's test results are here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=677074).

It depends on what your intended use is. Are you going to be doing long shoots every week where you will definitely be charging your cells every week? If so, go with 2700mAh cells (PowerEx is highly recommended). Are you going to shoot for shorter periods of time springled throughout a few weeks? Do you want to be able to keep a set of spares in your bag for a few month? Then the low-discharge cells (Eneloops, etc.) will be better.

i found that battery test post! Very informative! I wouldnt be using the flash very often but when i would i'd need the power so im thinking i'll try the powerex. Maybe i'll just get a set of both :)

this charger will also charge the eneloops and any others right?

That's what I did. I had several sets of the 2650 mAh batteries that would self-discharge in 1-2 weeks. They were great freshly (within a day or two) charged, but it was a huge hassle to make sure they were ready when I just had a notion to grab my camera and go. Then came along the LSD rechargeables and now my life is complete.

Yes, it'll charge eneloops and other NiMH batteries. Looks like the charger comes with 8 Powerex 2700 batteries... If you haven't already purchased eneloops, you might want to give Maha Imedions a try.... Low self discharge like eneloop, yet more powerful...

The Sanyo 2700's (in my opinion) would beat the Powerex 2700.
Sanyo 2700's are ALSO rebranded as Sony 2700's.

Have a look at the NiMH battery shoot out.

From this post, the Powerex 2700's aren't looking so hot.

But you have to realize that Powerex 2700 is NOT one of those "low self-discharge" (LSD) type of battery. So if Powerex 2700 is not "so hot" of a battery, then other brands -- non-LSD types -- aren't going to be, either. In fact, the person who did the test of Powerex 2700, had this to say about the brand in conclusion:

"The results confirm what has been anecdotally reported elsewhere, that the Powerex 2700 cells have a moderately slow rate of discharge."

I know that the Powerex 2700's are not LSD batteries.

You have to realize... the Sanyo 2700's are NOT LSD batteries as well.

I personally would prefer the Sanyo 2700's rather than the Powerex.
Mainly because they're built in Japan, and are makers of the famous Eneloop.
So, to me, it comes down to personal preference and which brand you trust.

The first test by "silverfox" was conducted in 2005 when Powerex 2700 wasn't available, I believe, and that explains why it wasn't listed among the batteries tested. Sanyo 2700 and Powerex 2700 are both "Made in Japan" using the same technology, so I don't think one would beat the other in any aspect of their performance in significance. While I have tested Powerex 2700, I haven't with Sanyo 2700, so this is just my "guess."

Yep I do realize that the Powerex 2700's weren't available at the time of the testing.

Regardless of who made what, and how it was made we're just going to be running in circles.
I guess it comes down to brand... and price... :D

Powerex 2700 is also Made in Japan, by the way, and their LSD battery, Imedion, outperforms the famous eneloop. My point is not that Powerex is in any way better than Sanyo, or the other way around. The bottomline is that both brands, whether high mAh or LSD versions, are perfectly fine and suitable for us photographers' daily use.

That's right. They both make excellent french fries.... :)
