Just playing around in RAW and seeing how it converted to B&W. I think it came out not half bad.

Sandy,
It came out wonderfuly. I like the contrast and tones very much. The sun coming from the right and the projection of shadows sugests a calm afternoon.
as for the background, I woul maybe try a diferent setting were either I couldn't see the black line and windows (?) sugesting some construction.
Having some kind of blured construction in the background works sometimes if it is a distant subject related with the prime subject in some way.
In this case, maybe a distant house or barn. I know you have some in your area.
Besides that sugestion, the composition is great and the photo realy works for me.

Thanks for the comments JMAS, I actually blured out the background, thought it was distracting, and I did it in a hurry so I missed a few little areas. Here it is without the blurring

It's much better with the bluring, Sandy.
You did it very well, I didn't notice it was PS blur.

Trust me Marie when I tell you that the barrel is that grainy, It has been sitting outside there for 15 plus years. It's a wonder it's still together.  We plant impatients in it. Thanks all for the comments. Well maybe I gave it a tad to much USM   but it is still pretty darn grainy.
P.S. Marie; Love your new avatar. :) :)

I believe you about the barrel Sandy
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
bizzie lizzies (that's what I call impatients) are wonderful.
how they keep flowering all summer and right into autumn.
very bizzie always, and not all all impatienthttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
the barrel is more beautiful the more I look at it.
I didn't/don't like the background
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_redface.gif
don't think it helps
maybe move the barrel:confused:
I am sure you are good at that (when they are full)http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif ;)

I like it better with the background blur Sandy. The textures are very nice as well. One of your best efforts, I think.

Thanks all, I agree with the background blur. One of the problems when you zoom in on something you also foreshorten the distance of the background, I probably should have opened the lens more but it was taken almost into the sun and very bright. The building in the background is a fair distance away ( across the road).
