Nice job on all these both the shooting and the PP. May have to see if I can get anything from a vehicle. I'm up for something different. I love shooting the birds but need to expand once in a while.

Question about UFC/Boxing/Whatever. Do you guys (as the viewer) ever get pissed when someone knocks the other person out in 2 minutes? I mean... didn't you pay good money to be there (If you are actually there)? Didn't they used to last... at least 30 minutes?
I don't know... I think I'd be pissed if I had to go home after 5 minutes.

Nope... never mad... even if it is 11 seconds... it beats the hell out of boxing any day in my book. Tonights PPV was on for about 3 hours... 6 or so fights... several went the distance.
Dan Henderson and Mike Bisbing.... knockout of the night for sure... haven't seen a KO like that in a long time... made the entire night.
Plus... think of it this way.... one buddy gets the fight $45 we all might pitch in $5 or just bring food and drinks and make a night of it... very cheap night really... and it's just a killer sport IMO. Really the only sport I follow. :)
Or... you could pay $5 -$10 and check out the fights at several places here in town... just fun... no matter how fast or slow the fights are. Again... 100X's better than boxing IMO.
Good times!
Hatch
( for the folks being there ... had a buddy working security at the matches in Vegas.... said it was just flat out awesome... but... would I pay $1500 a seat to be in the front... nope... $50 at home... best seat in the house IMO.... )

Hey all, sorry I've been scarce, but I think about you guys a lot and wish I had more time to take some photos and share them with you for feedback. I see some of the stuff you're doing on Facebook and its all excellent as expected.
Got a few photos published in a local magazine. Small time stuff, for sure, but still cool.
In order to help get this publication off the ground I didn't ask for any compensation, but I did ask for attribution. Unfortunately, I did not get that, either. *sigh*

Nice pic, Jay! Congrats on being chosen. I guess several of you are due congratulations as well. I hope to get there one of these days as well.
In the meantime, I will keep plugging away. Behold! My first RAW conversion. Shot this earlier, opened it in ACR, tweaked it a bit, then tweaked it more in CS3. I will be doing a lot more of this from now on, as I know I need to in order to get the most from my photos.
Feedback, good and bad is very much appreciated. This is my wife's bike and I know there isn't much to comment about in terms of composition which I know is kinda blah), but if you have any suggestions in terms of processing, that would be very welcome, too.

I do. But, only if the pilot does lots of tight turns... so basically if you don't make it like a roller coaster... I'll be fine. ;) Strange thing is... I don't get sick on actual roller coasters... ?? Who knows.

Is that serious? If so, about how much would that cost?
I've flown in several sizes of planes and helicopters. The only time I can remember getting sick was on a C-130, and I think the pilot was making it rough on purpose.
Anyway, flying, and taking pics from a plane sounds like a lot of fun. How many passengers can you fit?

It's going to be a little while before I'm in a position to take other folks up. In all honesty, I've been out of the cockpit for a couple of years but I've signed up with an instructor over at Chandler and starting tomorrow morning, I'm going to rectify that situation.
Small general aviation (GA) aircraft tend to rent from between $80 and $140 an hour (which includes fuel) and the FAA says that a Private Pilot cannot charge more than a "pro rata" share of the rental. IOW, with two folks in the plane, I can't charge anyone more than half nor can I pay less than half. Also, because I'm not a Commercial Pilot, I can not allow myself to be hired to take someone flying (the technical term is "Holding Out For Hire") but I can invite someone to go flying with me if I initiate the flight.
For optimum safety and to keep weight and balance safely in the green area of the chart, I really wouldn't take more than one adult along at a time. Especially in the heat of the summer when the air is thinner and performance is decreased.

Everything I've read on the f/4 version seems to say it's wicked sharp. Some think it's better at f/4 than the f/2.8L IS is at f/4.

I think the setting that really had the most "pop" was running the LR Clarity slider to 100%
A little selective saturation increase (accenting the orange of the museum dirt and the reflected blue from the sky) and a boot in contrast.
IIRC, I sharpened them pretty aggressively too to take advantage of the metalic quality.

Mine isn't the IS version since I couldn't shell out the additional like 600 for the IS, but I don't go anywhere without my f4. I find it to be limiting at times, but it's the lens that gives me the most keepers, and having used Tammie's 2.8, I can say I much prefer the weight of the f4.

Thanks Dean...
Thanks, Jay. I've heard lots of good things about LR. I need to get me a copy.

Havent seen any new shots to post up in a few days so I'll throw my latest shot up here - its actually been a while since I've been able to get out and shoot at all... Went down to Green Valley to a friend's bowling alley (Green Valley Lanes - Next to the "Wet Stop at exit 69") Its kind of the start of some promo work I'm doing in my spare time... Either way, here is the shot, let me know what you think - good or bad...

Thanks for the kind words everyone, @kristy, the pins were fairly dirty to begin with but with the amount and type of sharpening I applied, the dirt and scratches just seem to pop right out while adding what looks a bit like noise or film grain on the wooden floor.

Hey all!
Picked up some new gear this afternoon. New lightstand, and two umbrellas (shoot-thru and reflector) to go with my second shoemount flash that I bought a few months back. Now I have two sets.
Since I can't afford the big-buck strobes, I'm trying the Strobist way. :)
This afternoon, I'm shooting an athlete friend who's trying to get some sponsors. He's already picked up one national sponsor with the help of some shots I did for him earlier, and now they've asked for some of him in action to post on their website. I hope I can come through for him! If I get some decent results I'll post them up for feedback.
I have to tell you that I'm discouraged with my shots of people most times. I think I just need to read and practice more. Doesn't help that you guys post such kick-butt work all the time. You have set my standards really high. So maybe it does help - it will just take me a while to get there.
If anyone is free and in East Mesa this afternoon and wants to come tell me what I'm doing wrong, feel free to do so! ;) Call me at 480-371-4919.
@Kristy - Love the pics of your daughter. Her 'crazy' pic just made me grin like a fool. Couldn't help it. Great work!

Ok, here's the first one. We shot in a busy gym, so I couldn't put up a background (even if I had one) and there were lots of mirrors to pick up my flashes and so forth. I spent a few hours trying different effects to minimize the background, and ended up with a combination of blur and vignette. Please tell me honestly what you think of my results.
My two flashes are shoot through umbrella high camera left, reflective umbrella low camera right. He turned his head towards me in this shot, kinda screwing up the lighting, but I still like it.
Unfortunately, I spent all that time working on the basic quality JPEG (shot RAW + basic) - totally forgot about the RAW file. I'm such a NOOB! I will have to go back and do it all over again to get the best sharpness.
I liked the intensity in this pic - I have others where he's not deadlifting 675 lbs. I'l post more as I get to them.
Champion Nutrition is the sponsor, so we wanted that featured prominently.

Just back from the NPC USA's in Vegas... my wife was in the competition... we shot these the day after... the spray tan has the skin all messed up... but... I still like the shots we got.
I converted the image to black and white as well... just to see how it looked... I dig it.
Skin looks a little smooth with the web compression... full res image has plenty of detail.
Lighting was the Ranger RX/AS and the Deep Octa...
I have a ton of catching up to do... maybe tomorrow evening...

Yeah... I like how she looks in the shot... but the distortion isn't doing anything for me... just glad I shot more at different angles... :)
She didn't do well... at least in her mind.. .she didn't break the top 15....
My spin on it... as you know... very few people can do what they do... so...that is an accomplishment to say the least. She is a type "A" personality... so... it's never good enough! LOL
She placed 1st in Jr. Masters...won the Jr. Masters overall, and placed 2nd in her class the week before in LA.
This show was much bigger... with 47 girls in her class alone... and it was the top girls from all over the US... so... it was a tough show. She learned a lot and will go for it again next year...

What is a reasonble price to charge for 3 hours of work at a wedding, my first one?
Factor in... your hourly rate + travel(round trip)+post work hours+ any print items/cd incuded = your rate.
What do you want to make net after everything is factored in? $50 an hour take home? Less... more?
Figure 3 hours... 4-500 photos.... maybe less... depends on what you are shooting...formals...candids... etc.
How long does it take you to prep the images... will they be online...do you charge a fee to post them online? Is there a fee for hosting?
Factor it all in... or you stand to make -$1.02 an hour... a few of us have been there...done that!!! Steve...Kristy? Myself included....
Hope this helps...

Don't give up POTN and the AZPOTN is a Great place, just sometimes you just hit it wrong.......

Dean... sorry for not commenting... I've been a space case the past week... in Vegas until Sunday... catching up on work since...
The shots... just looked again. I can't see anything wrong with them. If anything... maybe a little more fill towards the hands/shorts area but... this is all subjective as it all depends on your goals for the shoot. Looks to be a pretty good ratio from the right to left of his face... maybe a touch more light on the left... but... again.. this is to taste and how you wanted the shots. I would be curios to see the difference if you would have used the umbrella to bounce vs using it as a shoot through...
I think you did a really nice job... just my $.02

Hey Dean... I'm sorry.. I did reply on FB so that's why I didn't reply here.. I think I suggested that you can lighten them back up and let the gym show, because the location is cool. I was hoping to see few more shots.. as you mentioned a few others that you really liked. :)
The images look really sharp.. in one of the shots, the guy is holding a barbell, and it's crooked. That bothers me a little bit, but I hate to nitpick at peoples photos. IMO, it's art... so if you love it, does it matter what everyone else thinks?
Of course we love feedback... but often times I am not qualified to give proper feedback.. I just shoot what I see, and sometimes I like it, and sometimes I don't.. sometimes I miss focus and get mad.. you know.. we are all learning and struggling along.
I hope we have not alienated you, as I do not think it was intentional. Often times I don't comment on something if I am super busy, or if I just have nothing to say... I know that sounds dumb. But if it was terrible, I would surely say something to help you improve. :)

How long does it take you to prep the images... will they be online...do you charge a fee to post them online? Is there a fee for hosting?
Factor it all in... or you stand to make -$1.02 an hour... a few of us have been there...done that!!! Steve...Kristy? Myself included....
Hope this helps...

Yeah...
WOW.... NIce pics Jeremy... I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the first shot.... breathtaking.. It makes me want to go there.. sigh...
Did you have a fun trip?
Frank.. Betty is looking stunning as usual... :) Great job on the pics, you know I already told you.. but it goes without saying. :)
Playing with my lens some more.. what do you all think of this..? I was going for a really dramatic B&W.... is it too heavy for ya?
Thanks Kristy. :) I did have fun. Always do... when we have stuff planned. LOL
I like your edit/shot/thingydohillywhopper. :) I don't think it's too dark.
:(. Have I run afoul of some unspoken POTN rule? Are my photos so bad that you can't say anything positive? I don't understand why I didn't get a single reply to my post on Friday night.
I really look up to you all and truly seek your feedback.
Thanks for the note on Facebook, Kristy. Was hoping for some comment on the lights or something from you all here.
My first attempt at this type of thing, and am looking to the pros for some constructive criticism.
I thought about it... but I know NOTHING about lighting... so I skipped it. lol They look good to me... but that's coming from me.

I agree with Hatch to use a bounce umbrella instead of a shoot thru in this situation. You have a little more control over where the light is hitting with a bounce. In the first picture the face is not as sharp as I would like it (the sponsors logo is sharp but the face looks a little oof). You might want to stop down a bit and up the power of the lights (or move them closer). The crop is a bit off for me, the weights are cut off and you cropped at the knee (usually you shouldn't crop at a joint - knee, elbow, etc). But that's to taste.
I've been traveling between East Mesa and West Phoenix - my dad had knee replacement surgery and I've been helping my mom at home.
If you do a re-shoot let me know, I can bring the ab800's and use the modeling light to help see what the light is going to do.

hello again from the east coast. great shots everyone. Dean, I too like to bounce my flash in an umbrella. kinda wraps the light. anyways, I'm thinking of going to a park tomorrow after work and bring my camera again...not sure which park yet cause I get off at 430...

Thanks, all. Sorry for the whining! Kristy - I always appreciate your feedback. In spite of your inferior equipment, you take pretty good pictures. hehehehe :D JUST kidding. I very nearly bought Canon when I got back into photography last year.
Steve, thanks for that detailed feedback. In my thinking, the shoot-thru would offer a softer, more uniform light, whereas the bounce is harder. I originally bought just the bounce, but decided to try the shoot-thru also to see what it looked like and thought the results were good. Anyways I have both so I'll try the bounce next time.
I might be able to sharpen up his face a bit more...if I edit the RAW this time instead of the basic JPEG. Doh!
I struggled with the crop. In order to get more of his legs in, I'd obviously have to pull back, and that would decrease the size of his torso and face. But I agree it would better if I hadn't chopped his legs off. Just not sure how to achieve the results I was looking for.
Thanks for the offer of the ABs. Let me guess, I won't get addicted if I try it just one time?
I'll check out that article.

Not with the Alien Bees, but if you use the Elinchrom Ranger with the Deep Throat that Hatch has..... well then all bets are off!
The AB's are a good system, but the quality of light from the Ranger/Deep Throat is sweet!

As far as using a flash at a wedding, what is everyones opinion on it? I would rather bounce an Alien Bee off the ceiling, than rely on high ISO shooting. I will be in a typical church. How often or not do yall use lights in a ceremony?
Thanks all!

Never shot a wedding so take this with a grain of salt.
Check with the church to make sure that you can use flash during the ceremony.
Personally, I'd use a speedlite on a bracket with some type of diffuser. This set-up will give you the ability to move around, if you have an assistant they could use a second speedlite to add fill. Setting up an AB will be limiting and you'll need to ensure that the equipment is not blocking anyones view of the ceremony and is out of the way (you don't want anyone tripping the light and getting hurt or trashing your equipment).
Whatever you decide to use, make sure you have a backup plan (and equipment) just in case.
Again that's my best guess.

Thanks! I'm thinking similar things. I was hoping If flash is allowed, if maybe I could just setup up a B800 in a corner somewhere, and bounce it. I'm highly considering renting a 5dmk2, so need no flash for the ceremony.
Anyone want to rent me theirs?(seriously)

Here's a couple more from the shoot.
Struggling with getting the white balance set consistently here. I feel like the lighting is...ok. I also darkened the backgrounds in these but not as much and didn't blur them as in the previous shot, per Kristy's suggestion.
Still learning. Any feedback welcome.

Man you guys are boring.
Great shots Hatch! As always... :)
Well, I went up to Colorado this past weekend to visit my dad. Took a nice little drive through Rocky Mountain National Park. Pretty nice park. The weather was really funky while there. Some parts got SNOW!! SNOW IN JULY!!!
Anywho, here are two shots that I've gone through so far...
Some lake... can't remember the name. I'll have to look it up...

And, random spot along the road. HDR the tweaked in PS. I'm... 50/50 on this one. Not sure yet... thoughts?

So those are those... if I like the others, I'll post them. :)
Jeremy - love the first one. Very beautiful, love the reflection. The second one has potential, but I'd like to see a little more contrast. I like Hatch's B&W, but might even make it a little contrastier.

did a quick edit on the image using photoshop.
level adjustment (set the white point on the lettering, black point is dark shadow area, mid-point moved from 1.00 to 1.05 or so)
added a curves layer
did a little clean up on the face
removed the light reflections in the mirror
changed the crop to post to potn
that's it.

I just use my flash cause I've shot in some large churches so I don't think I'd get the right light from all angles if I were moving around some. and I just use my omnibounce diffuser to soften the light.
but really you got to talk to the church or the person doing the ceremony as to whether or not they allow flash. i wanna say most do but you never know
