Anywho...
Any of my AZ Bretheren or Sistern doing their own sensor cleaning? I'm considering tackling that chore on my 5D and I'm wondering what methods folks are using on their gear?

For my 5D:
I cleaned my sensor once, then took it to Tempe Camera to have them clean up the mess I made. The second time, I just took it to Tempe Camera. I can't remember what cleaning kit I used.
When I cleaned the sensor on my 20D, I didn't have a problem - quick and easy.
Here's an image I took over the weekend, AB800, AB Beauty Dish, Vagabond II. I think the settings were f16 iso 100 ss 1/200 and my attempt at a black and white conversion. About 9:30 AM in a very small semi-shady area.
Sam (the model) is 13 and was volunteered by his mother to pose.

PhotoVision is here........... :)
The PhotoVision double bonus Issue 76 was just placed in the mail this past Tuesday. Based on the response of those who have already received the issue, we are experiencing exceptionally high read errors with the 76A disc.
It appears to be something in the encoding which allows it to be viewed on some players and computers while not on others. Because this problem appears wide spread, we have decided to re-duplicate the 76A disc.
As soon as we isolate the exact problem, we will mail a replacement disc to all PhotoVision subscribers.
We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.
Sincerely, Ed Pierce
Only 1 video on the disc will play

hi everyone! quick question, what are some good tips for taking good pictures in rainy/cloudy conditions? i'm thinking about heading up north to the gc this weekend, but it seems as though it will be cloudy... :( past experience, my images have come out too dark.

Tripod and Bracket, Bracket, Bracket...
What you may not get in one frame can always be "assembled" in post processing (HDR, Exposure Blending, Etc...)
I'm envious. All I got up there a couple of weeks ago was severe clear skies. :(

So, today I went over to a friends house to help him try and calibrate his monitor/printer. I took over my laptop+monitor so that we could compare, since mine is calibrated. I also took a long a print I had printed by Mpix.com just so we could compare his prints to that.
I get there, pull up the image on both his and mine monitors... and the print from Mpix... looks more accurate on his monitor than mine... ??? WTF?! lol I'm the one with the so called "calibrated" monitor... why does his look more accurate to the professional print?
Granted... I haven't re-calibrated my monitors in a couple weeks... but would that really make a difference? Or, maybe I calibrated my monitors completely wrong? (which is totally possible).
What do ya'll think?

Could just be blind luck. Some systems come out of the box close enough for Government Work. Did you print anything on the uncalibrated system before and then after calibration?

White Insert + Difuser Over Front
http://www.pbase.com/flyingphotog/image/116890091/large.jpg
Notes:
- All these seem a tad reddish but that could be bounce from the desk
- Open Birdcage with standard white ceiling could be pretty good. Adds catchlights nicely
- White Insert may need -1/3 or -2/3 FEC. Pretty Stark
- Silver Insert: Nice Sparkle
- Gold Insert: Wouldn't use unless there's a sunset/rise to match.
- Difuser: Gives typical blue-ish plastic look look. Needs 200K warmer or so.
Final Thought: Shape of device not good for shooting down at someone. Need subject at least at lens height.

Well, we didn't actually calibrate his system, since his looked to be pretty spot on. All we were trying to do is make the printer print something that looked like the Mpix print.... which we weren't able to do (probably something with the printer profile?).

In this particular case, I think so too. Looks like surroundings and angle to subject will play a big part with this kit. We're supposed to go to a work-related reunion on 9/12 so maybe I'll drag it along and play Paparazzi that night and try it out.

Because your monitor is calibrated has nothing to do with printing, it helps but...
for each type of paper being used (glossy HP paper, glossy Epson paper, etc) each will probably require a different printer profile. You have to remember all the settings used on the printer (print quality, type of paper - what you use may not be listed in your printer) have to remain constant. Each time you change a print cartridge you need to check your profile and may need to re-profile. Don't forget to turn off the option to have the printer do the color management and let your editing software do the color management (ie photoshop). Look up the videos for the color monkey (or however you spell it) and they discuss how this device is used to calibrate your monitor and printer. Then if you want to have more fun, add a scanner and you get to build a profile for that as well!
And after all the ink and paper you burn through, you might find it cheaper to do your proofs at costco (I've had really good luck with them), then send the images to your favorite lab!
If I remember correctly, Terry is doing his own printing so you might ask him about printer profiling.

Like this one, the Lumiquest seems to open the shadows more. At least the object in the lower right corner is more distinct in the shots with the lumiquest and her hair is better separated from the background.

For this quick and dirty test, I agree...
I actually like what the Silver Insert does as well but Kristy was sitting down at a reddish wooden desk and I think some of that red got picked up as well.
I want to try the Silver Vs Sunlight and the Gold Insert against a late afternoon shot.
I was suprised how much of a kicker effect I still got just with the open "Birdcage" structure. I was not suprised that the Difuser cast a rather nasty Bluish tone on things. I've yet to find any "On Flash" difuser that didn't.
The White Insert throws a lot of light. I think for a normal 10' distance, it's gonna need a little minus FEC.

@ Brian: Wanna buy a 100mm f/2.8 Macro? Very lightly used.

I used....
Canon 5D
Sigma 180mm macro lens (love this lens)
Canon 580ex flash...
Being that it was overcast I had to shoot around ISO 800 to keep the shutter speed up... around 1/100th-1/250th a sec... slower at times if I was using the monopod. Majority of the shots were hand-held as the insects were not in the best locations. LOL
I had the flash set from - 1 1/3rd to +1 depending on the lighting and the magnification. You lose a stop or more when you shoot the lens at 1:1.
I try to allow for enough ambient light to make the shot look decent...
Most shots were f/9.0 on up to f/13
Hope this helps. :)

Oh, I'll get back up there sooner rather than later but I think we're going to Tubac and Patagonia on Sunday. One day trip so we're not coming home with the masses.
Watch yourself on I-17 if you're coming home on Monday.
We're supposed to go to a work-related reunion on 9/12 so maybe I'll drag it along and play Paparazzi that night and try it out.
have fun on your day trip! :) thanks for the caution about I-17, prolly will be heading back on sunday, hopefully to beat the crowds.

Proposal for the outing... I know the topic is a few threads back... so...
What about......
October 10th
Red Rock Crossing near Sedona
0800 when the park opens
We have a model or models to shoot.... for those of us who would like to add to the portfolios and work on outdoor lighting.
Or... if you are not interested in shooting a model (if I can round a couple up) then you would have the nice landscapes to shoot.
This puts Randy and Jeremy a little closer to us... and we get to take a nice trip to a scenic location.
For the model/s and possibly a MUA.... would anyone consider kicking in for the MUA or if the model/s charge a fee for a model release?
Just tossing the ideas out there.....
What do you all think?

Nice work all around. The storm image is very powerful but I'm really liking the "alternate" view of San Xavier.
Thanks! Where are you desert light photos?! :p

Father/Daughter at an outdoor concert event in Daytona, Florida.
The little girl didn't seem to be liking being in a crowd but she looked quite safe in Daddy's arms.

Who wants to go hiking?! :D :D :D :D
Weatherford Trail (http://arizonahighways.com/static/index.cfm?contentID=1306)
Length: 14.8 miles round-trip (to Doyle Saddle)
Elevation: 8,020 to 11,354 feet
Difficulty: Moderate
Directions: From Flagstaff, drive 2 miles north on U.S. Route 180 to Forest Road 420 (Schultz Pass Road). Continue on FR 420 past the end of the pavement for approximately 5.5 miles to the trailhead, which is on the right (south) side of the road. FR 420 is closed in the winter because of snow.
I'm wanting to go in late September early October, right when the fall colors should be good. Thinking of driving up Sunday, hiking a little. Camping. Hike more Monday. Drive home. Still haven't decided though. lol

I've never done a hike/camping trip before. could be fun. if my job status stays the same I might just try and escape the valley for a bit and join you.
Jay, awesome pics. what tunnel is the last one from?

That's actually in Vegas. It's the moving sidewalk that goes from the street into Bally's. IIRC, 10 second exposure with the camera just riding along on the moving handrail...

Dunno if I'd really want to camp but a little walking around for part of the day might be nice.
One logistical issue Dude: Some of you can get up there a lot quicker than others. One person's "Up At Six" is another person's "Up At Three"

 Really?! It's loads of fun.... well, not the hiking in all your gear... but it's still fun. :D lol

What? Don't like getting dirty? :p lol
Like I said... it's still up in the air whether I'll be camping up there or not. Once nice thing about camping up there, is you know for sure that you'll catch the sunrise/sunset. If you drive, you just can't be sure all the time.
Plus... my damn work can't decide if we're going to be open or closed on Mondays now. LOL So, we'll see.

Great shots Jeremy and Jay.... Randy I like clouds in the HDR image. I've only played around with HDR a little. Pretty cool looking.
Okay.... so...input requested.
Jay and I shot up at Red Rock Crossing on Tuesday.... what we learned.
1. Have to shoot from 3-8 in the afternoon/evening. With the sunset the mountains will look amazing. Morning shots are not the best as they are in the dark and the sun is so strong....
2. The place is going to fill up with people.
3. The water is going to be really cold... it was cold while we were there and I'm not sure if we have a model or models they will get in the water. Not a huge issue as there are some really nice places to shoot outside the water.
4. Proposed dates... would a weekday be out of the question to avoid a ton of people?
5. Proposed dates.... 10th or the 17th both are Saturdays.
This is all that I have now... let me know what you think. We are far enough out to make changes to have a nice gathering.

The weekends would be better for me, either the 10th or 17th.
The plus side of a late afternoon shoot is I get to sleep in!
Would the park have a problem with a group of photographers/models shooting? or would we need to get permission? It would suck to drive all that way then being told we need a permit due to the size of the group.
Any recommendations for a place to stay Saturday Night in Sedona? I might stay the evening and head back in the morning.
That's about it!

I guess that Telaquepaque shopping district down in the hole where 179 turns and crosses Oak Creek at the base of Schnebly Hill Road had cars piled on cars in mud and debris with people needing to be rescued.
Pretty intense scene.
