One of these days we should put together an AZPOTN trip to Africa. I go every year anyway and can save folks a ton of money on a REAL photography trip instead of a tour.I did Kruger in March this year, but it's too commercial for my taste. I like Kenya , Tanzania and Boswana though.
For reference on costs, $2850.00 for r/t airfare for two, $2100.00 for 2 weeks Land Rover rental, $800.00 for game park and camping fees and then whatever we buy to cook and $300.00 for hotels on arrival and departure days.
That's $3025.00 per person. I take an extra $1000.00 for anything that might come up.

ooh... that sounds fun!! how long would it be for? 2 weeks?

@ Dean... the distortion in that shot is fine.. only affects the bike from my viewpoint. :)

@ Jay.. sent you an e-mail on the insurance lady... Oh and killer aircraft photos posted yet again.. How do you do that?

@ Terry... Do tell how you like the D7 or 7D or whatever that thing is called. I'm interested in the better focusing system.. I like to toggle my focus points, and am wondering if my camera isn't supportive of my shooting style.. with most of the power being weighted at center and all. I never focus/recompose.. but sure do love to toggle my focus points. ;) Have fun trip!

@ Jeremy.. put on a flipping sweater... open the window and be refreshed by the chill in the air and embrace something called "SEASONS"... we have little of that down here.... lol...

Off and running.. Happy Thursday!!

Here's a question for the computer people. Why can I only get online when I run my computer in safe mode and have to plug it into my modem and can't use my router? I have the wireless card in the computer. This thing is really aggravating>:(

FlyingPhotog

Steve is probably the guy to ask but I'm pretty sure that in at least one way, Safe Mode does not load drivers so you probably don't have a driver for your LAN card loaded.

Booting in Safe Mode though does not mean good things are happening.

It will boot up normally, but I can't get online. The COX guy said there is something in the computer that won't let it get online. I have no idea how to figure it out. and when in safe mode there are some things that won't run. It is really starting to annoy me...

have you logged onto your router and checked the settings on there? make sure you set a password and stuff so you only allow people you want on it?

Safe mode loads very few drivers, and usually no network components. When you press F8 during boot up to get to safe mode, do you have an option for Safe Mode with Networking?

The real question, is why are you having to run in safe mode to begin with?

Yes, I am running Safe Mode with Networking right now to get online. The IT guy i talked with at Cox said there is something in the computer that is not letting me get online when in normal mode. I can't figure out what it is, he said some sort of firewall but I can't figure out how to disable it. I reset the Windows firewall settings to low and a still having the problem so it must be some other software that i don't know about/can't find.

Was out at Falcon Field today with some other aviation shooters. Got some nice shots of the CAF's B-17G Sentimental Journey returning from a week long trip to points farther west.

interesting effects. The wide angle distortion isn't doing it for me in some of the images. On the first image the people on the left hand side of the image (as you look at it), appear to be sliding down an incline.

I picked up the 7D this morning. It's got a crap load more menus and things you can customize. More like what my 5D MkII should have had. No images yet. I'll look through the manual tonight and play with it this weekend.

Can't wait to see some pics Terry.

I pre-ordered mine thru newegg. Who knows when its gonna come in and ship though, they keep changing the ETA date on their site.

I also ordered a 70-200 F4L IS today. Hope to see it early next week. No camera to use it on though since I jumped the gun and sold my 50d already. Oooops.

Fall Color Expeditions:

There are quite a few options to take. I downloaded the AZ Highways Fall Edition and have been reading their ideas. There are, of course, the couple up near Flagstaff. There are a couple WAY South (one you have to go into New Mexico). Or there is East to the White Mountains.

I'm kind of leaning towards the White Mountains. I've been wanting to head over there anyways. Might head up there Monday. Anyone care to join? It's a 3 hour drive from Payson. So, if you want to catch the sunrise... lol Uhhh... might want to spend the night there. ;)

Any takers?

With the photo you commented on, you're looking at some Nik processing. I use the tonal contrast all the time. I use it for sharpening some things, softening others, and a bunch of other things. Most of the other Nik processes are left alone by me, but they're fun to play with.

In no particular order:

- Lose the Fireworks. It detracts from the logo
- "On Location / Outdoor" is redundant
- The second chunk of what you do (at bottom left) is really disconnected from the rest of the list and really, it all falls under "Event" IMO. You might do better to condense it to something like "Vehicle Photography"or some such thing.
- The quote about "Hips Or Wheels" would make me want to keep you as far away from my High School-aged daughter as possible. Sorry to be brutal about it but but it sounds very "Redneck" to me.
- I like the orange on black text but I'd consider making the camera + lens into more of a graphic line drawing instead of an actual photo of a body and an 85L. It really weighs down that side of things.

It was awesome when the laptop was running, we could go anywhere in/around the house and get signal. So what kind of router did you decide on? If you don't have a laptop and the hookup is right behind the comp. I don't see the point in having one. but there could be issues it helps with that I don't know about.

Randy, I like the top one better. I am no expert so my $.02 isn't even worth that, but something looks off to me. Maybe the "portable studio" being all by itself? Maybe its the way the top looks empty to me. Or my last idea is to bring the text block in the middle down so it is centered between the top and bottom. It just looks like there was a line at the top that got erased and there should be something there. The logo looks cool though with the aperature blades in the letter!

I think "Portable Studio." should be all lowercase and matching the font of "bam photo."

Give it a kind of uniform thing. Bam Photo: portable studio.

Jake: I talked to my son, the two things most likely to have caused your problem:

1. It could be your user profile got corrupted - to test this create another user log-in Id and then try to connect to the router. If this solves the problem, then you need to copy a bunch of stuff to the new profile - email, mydoco's, and other. I can get the exact information for you if you need it.

2. computer issue - maybe reload the drivers that kind of thing or something else got corrupted and will need to be looked at.

Cool shot, Frank. Love the skin.

Couple nits: The pose looks a bit awkward, and the back of the hand doesn't flatter her. As I look at the image, my focus doesn't stay on her face, but tends to bounce around. Secondly, it looks like you lit this as a butterfly/clamshell with the beauty dish. When you turn her head to the side, you need to move your lights too. You ended up broad lighting her.

I have my gear insured through State Farm, its a rider on our homeowners policy and even covers "stupidity" ... $3500 in gear is covered for $3 a month. No deductible and its replacement value (no recpts but they requested serial numbers and pics of ea. item)

I'm so confused!!

FlyingPhotog
4th of October 2009 (Sun), 02:06
If you have MLU engaged, you should be having to press the shutter twice to actually make an image.

1) Mirror goes up and camera waits
2) Shutter Fires

You should notice (1) as a normal sounding mirror slap while (2) is a much softer "Click"

Pretty sure MLU works with the self timer. You just have to wait on it. I forget how long.

Those shots are amazing Jeremy!!
when I use MLU, I also set the 2 second timer, once the shutter button is tripped, the mirror locks up for 2 second then the shutter trips. As far as turning it on, just in the custom functions somewhere. If you in normal shot mode (no timer) then you have to hit the shutter button twice, once to lock the mirror up and again to trip the shutter. I hope that helps (and that is what you were asking?)

Another candid from this morning. This and the previous one were taken with my $15 Craigslist special lens (Vivitar 90mm f/2.8 Macro). That's the cool thing about Nikon; so much older glass will mount right up. No AF, not auto aperture, no IS, LOL. But, still good IQ. Really makes you appreciate all the technology we have today.

If any of you portrait pros wanna take this and work your magic on it, I'd love to see what you can do if you don't mind sharing what tools and techniques you use. I'm always trying to learn.

Steve - thanks! I guess I liked the warmth of the early morning light, but the color balance in yours is more accurate and I like it. Honestly I have a lot to learn when it comes to getting the right white balance.

What settings do you use for USM? I don't like the oversharpened look that you can sometimes get, but you have avoided it here.

Dean:
I usually do the USM at the very end, then merge all the layers and USM 199 / .3 / 0 to the merged layer and then use the opacity if it is too much (or you can fade the sharpening by the Edit Menu / Fade and fade the amount of USM that you apply). The fade will work after most filters or adjustments, FADE will fade the last adjustment that you did. When you apply the USM zoom to 100% on the eyes and apply the filter, check carefully that the hair doesn't get wanky if it does lower 199 to taste. But I find with most images the above settings work pretty well.

In other news, I just picked up a 20x30 print from Costco. $8.99 before tax and it looks damn good, especially considering it's from an XTi! The paper is really heavy and the color is just as solid as any of their prints. I'm stoked to be able to start printing big prints without mailing out!

They do a pretty nice job.... a tip if you don't already know... tell them to turn off the auto corrections... this way they will print the files as you have them adjusted in Photoshop.

I tend to mount anything 11x14 and up to avoid warping/waves. Are you going to have the image mounted? Several places online sell self adhesive mounting foam-cor. I used these guys for a display I put together... worked great! http://www.artsupply.com/foamcore/self_adhesive.htm

Yeah, autocorrections are off!

I'm going to give this poster to the model. She wants to use it to promote me at the dojo she teaches at, so it'll work out. :)

ha, no where near. mine was for the youth group. no way we would have the parents pay $9k to send them on retreat, and none of us can afford that either :-P

My sister an nephew went down to the valley a couple weeks ago to get a free photo session by some random person who had heard about... all the stuff going on.

They're really good pictures. The MUA and Hairstylist did a fantastic job also.

If you want to check out their pics... you can go here (http://ashleymadsenphotography.com/blog/?p=152).

Annnnnd... my schedule MIGHT be changing... again! The people running the store honestly have no idea what the hell they're doing. It's starting to drive me insane.

Anyways... I might have Saturdays off again. :D lol

Random.

you sound like you would do a better job running the place than them...why don't you try? :-)

You know... when they first took over, I thought... "Hell no!"

But now... I'm kind of second guessing that. lol But, they have people coming in to open up a new furniture store at the beginning of the year... so, I don't know.

I bet the print is incredible. I was looking at your Antelope Canyon photo gallery the other day and thought they were all spectacular. I am going to the wave in January, and thought about stopping in Antelope Canyon, but from what I understand, the light does not beam into the cracks. Do you think it's still worth the trip there or just plan for later in the year.

Anyone shooting this weekend?

I am stuck at home watching my grandson. Not that that's a bad thing as he's such a good kid. :) Maybe I can shoot some pics of him!
