BECCA!!! I apologize.. I have been so behind on the thread and I failed to say "Welcome to AZ, and to our corner on POTN.... :)" So Welcome.. hope to see you next time we all get together.

We were supposed to do something this weekend... but it seems to have fizzled away??

Thanks, Kristy! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!

Thanks. I've got a couple of non people shots too that I'll link off PBase shortly...

One is (IMO) particularly good and another will give people a good laugh.

As Promised:

I like this one because I think I did a good job of having the flash mimic natural sunlight on the rose:

Uncanny, two guys at the same seminar with the same hat, vest, and everything. That's just too freaky!
Too Funny... One nit .. watch the shadows from the flash. The cube in the foreground is casting a shadow in one direction and the sun is throwing a shadow in the opposite direction.

@ Jay... really cool shots. :) Looks like the seminar was productive... :)

@ Randy... I would love to play, but I work during the week too... But do tell us more about your shoot! :)

@Ruckus.... I think lens choice depends on what you primarily will shoot... For me, I'd stick with the 24-70 but I love that lens. :)

Congrats!! So.... does that mean you still have a studio..?

BrianAZ
18th of October 2009 (Sun), 16:40
One of the requirements of the new home was that it had room for a studio. The great room is 25x18, which should be big enough. The ceilings are only 9' high, though, rather than the 14 I have now, so I'll have to get creative with the hair/seperation light. Normally, I raise the hair light to 10-11' in the air so that won't work here. On the plus side, is we should be keeping both houses, so I can still use the place I have now as it will be completely empty. When home prices go back up, I'll sell it.

I kind of thought so...

Too Funny... One nit .. watch the shadows from the flash. The cube in the foreground is casting a shadow in one direction and the sun is throwing a shadow in the opposite direction.

Only had one light with which to work so the reverse shadow was kind of unavoidable. Couldn't have really shot this with the camera on the other side either as it would have been 10' higher than this POV. It was just a "what if" while we were at the Workshop. Actually turned out a lot better than I expected it would.

Nothing worse than playing with yourself between shots...

Sorry, I couldn't resist..:)

Seriously though, how do you all find out about little events and seminars around town?

I'm on the email and snail mail list through www.friendsofarizonahighways.com (http://www.friendsofarizonahighways.com) which is the "sister" workshop side of AZ Highways Magazine. The back of Outdoor Photographer magazine is also chock full of ads for workshops and outings.

Great shots Jay! They all look really good. I wish I had been able to go to that. :(

You'd have liked it. A very informative classroom session on Friday and a fun day of shooting on Saturday. Got a lot hotter than people probably expected though.

Great pic. Who won?

Thanks Joe. Who Won? He Did...

Good stuff, Jay.

Baby Steps but stuff makes a lot more sense now.

Ya did just fine Joyce! Your white flowers are much better than anything I got out of the macro stops and your jumping shot is epic.

For the crouching shot, I think a couple steps to your left would have made for a nicer background with less holes in the vegetation.

yea heard the ef-s lens is actually just as good if not sharper then the 24-70L, but on a crop body the 24-70L will be a longer lens, the plus side is when i want to upgrade to a full frame camera i can use the 24-70 while the ef-s lens i'm cant. Looking to get the lens for a little of everything but mostly shooting cars with models.

Would just be a casual shoot. Someone mentioned this before, so I thought I would throw it out there.

Sooo... Fall this year... officially SUCKS!!!

I just spent FOUR FREAKEN DAYS up in Utah... it's all dead and brown and ugly and just... bleh!! I couldn't believe it. I talked to a few people who live up there, and they said their Fall sucked this year. One day they were green, next day they were yellow, next day they were gone. What is up with that? Damn trees...

Sooo... how was everyone's weekend?

Hey all, trying to catch up here. Nice images as always!

Jay and Joyce - enjoyed the pics from the workshop. I've never done anything like that. What do they usually cost?

Brian - congrats on the new place! I need to come by and watch you shoot sometime, if you don't mind. I'll help you set up and tear down. I don't have any plan to pursue portrait photography as a business, but I want to learn how to take better portraits of my family.

Those 1D MkIV images are awesome, but aren't they always?

Went for a long ride on my KLR last weekend. Tried to get some good pics, but it's hard when the group just wants to keep moving and it takes a while to get your camera out, swap lenses, etc. Anyhow if you are interested in seeing them, check here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/deanrachwitz/sets/72157622483556369/

Why wouldn't you? Think about shooting indoor volleyball or football on a low light field. Being able to shoot ISO 3200 or above and have clean files is a huge advantage IMO. ;)

+1 on what jay had mentioned. a lot of their workshops do look really nice, but yah they definitely get pricy and finding the time off to go is also a challenge (for me, anyway.:-|).. this whole inverse proportion of making money but no free time vs in college when you had time and no money is not fun... :-p

@ Dean.... Love the new shots!! NICE!! :)

@ Jeremy... sorry the fall leaves in Utah were disappointing.. :( No fun...

@ Matrix... WELCOME>>>!! I'll peek at your work tomorrow. :)

@ Jay... Nice B&W image.. (I noted a LR conversion, and so I think that means quick and dirty..? I'd boost some contrast on that baby and make it pop some. lol.. Really cool shot though..

@ Ryan...
But it's Kristy I was talking about. I remember when she would mention she tried not to go above 800 with her 5d classic :-)
I would love to be able to shoot clean images at high iso. I just shot football last friday at iso3200 on my 1dmk2...grainy! but usable for like the yearbook and the schools website I think

Ha ha! You are so right.. but with the 5D Mk2... ISO 1600 is my normal starting place.. lol... I notice that MANY of my indoor shots are at 1600, and very clean looking :) ... so funny.

Off and running.. Hope I didn't leave anyone out... Happy DAY!

Near as I can figure this thread is as much about the posting of random pictures and private conversations with friends as it is about what new cameras introduced what someone had for lunch.

POTN is a community of People and that becomes more evident when you come here to a local thread where folks have actually met face to face, have hung out together and (in some cases) work together.

Pow Wow is one of those Native American get-together type of things where the tribes have some dancing and food and show us all what we are missing by not understanding real Native American culture.

The good kind, not the gaming/casino, kind of culture.

I went to one a while ago at the Ft. McDowell Casino. I got a bunch of shots but didn't like them too much. They were doing the dancing in the middle of a parking lot that was surrounded by folding chairs and those EZ-UP shades so there was crappy foreground and background then there was all the parking lines they were dancing over. Costumes were really cool though! If I were better at PS I could put them in a different setting and get some good results.
BTW does anyone know if Lee has caught up with orders? Have you still been looking Jay?

I just got a couple of Hitech soft grad NDs. So far I like them a lot. On the P filter frame with a long grad side. Of course, no experience with the Lee's so can't compare. I'm trying to tame some of this AZ sunshine.

Great shot, Jay! He's so cute. Reminds me of my nephew when he was about 3 coming with my mom to pick me up at the airport. I flew in on one of those little puddle jumpers so had to walk across the tarmac to the terminal. I looked up and he was standing on a seat with this little hands pressed on the window and I can see he's saying something. When I got in, he's saying over and over "I dribe (drive) it!" The pilots got a big kick out of him!

We are planning a drive up to Sedona, over to Jerome, up to Williams and back down tomorrow. Anything I for sure shouldn't miss? I've never been to Jerome so I'm really looking forward to some new stuff.

Had a nice day yesterday driving up to Jerome and Sedona. Even made it up to one of my favorite restaurants in Flagstaff for lunch. I didn't get much in Jerome because my GPS sent me on a wild goose chase down this road (which looked more like a goat path) and we ended up tearing the valve stem on my tire so we spent some time at Big O Tires in Sedona getting that fixed!

Got one funny picture in Jerome. At least I thought it was funny until later when my husband commented that he hoped they weren't serious. Either way, I didn't get shot!

Nice work Frank.

Becca if that was Saturday, we would almost have crossed paths. Nice shots in the other thread. I found it very difficult to shoot Cathedral due to the low sun. Were you there in the afternoon? Very nice.

Red Rock Crossing is definately not a morning location. The light is much, much better in the late afternoon, early evening.

I do like how you got the light raking accross the wood though.

Thank you Jay.

I was going to mention the time of day thing... as we discovered... 4 pm on... and the place should be amazing.

I was there in the late afternoon. I love your shot! I never even thought to try from that perspective, although that could have been that my wet feet picked up 5 lbs of mud between the river and the sidewalk and I was having trouble dragging them along!

I posted some other shots from Sedona over in the Nature and Landscape forum if you want to have a look. Hope everyone else had as nice a weekend and we did!
nice shot! I ended up in flagstaff yesterday as well! what's your fave restaurant there if you don't mind me asking :-)

One of the guys that I rafted the Grand Canyon with owns a place on old Route 66 called Salsa Brava so I try to stop in whenever I'm in town. Great food!
