You crack me up... Honestly... I don't I have ever used the other modes... maybe spot metering... but I can't recall why/when I would have used it.
Evaluative does a nice job... IMO
I don't even know what the other ones do... let alone what the difference would look like. :p

Just eliminating the Red means that nothing is clipping. It doesn't however, mean that parts of your subject aren't an identical luminance value as the background (unless this is what you intended. In which case, I'll shaddup...) ;)

Might need a little Vaseline on the lens for women. ;)
Interesting to see that even f/5 is so shallow. I'm guessing you'd gave to go to f/8 to get all the way back to the ears?

I was up close... not at the minimum focusing distance... but... close. I should know better...
I tend to shoot to close and I tend to foget to stop down... it is a bad practice I haven't been able to tame. :o

Actually, seeing this great shot really taught me a lot about composing and seeing things differently. So a big thanks..

Fastest Glass you own...
I can't decide if I want to use the 5DC or the MkIII but the only lenses I'm considering are 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8 and 135 f/2 and the 135 is a big maybe because I suck at hand holding it.

Tried out the 24-70 and the 70-200L IS this morning. I hope you all are not growing to bored with these shots. The 70-200L is a little soft wide open...need to make an adjustment. Shooting with the 5D2... and all I can say... is what a fantastic camera so far... really enjoying it. The 24-70 hits the mark...wide open or stopped down... very pleased with how it performed.

i have an issue and need help. i went and took pictures of a rocket launch over the weekend. i noticed on the right side there was a light band at the edge of the image.
i know its not part of the sky. i'm not sure what is causing it... is it an issue of my shutter? light leak somewhere? help/ideas... :( :(

Yeah, tough call really.
Personally, I'd say get an estimate from Tempe Camera, Photomark or from Canon themselves but I think you might find the cost / value equation lacking in the long run.
You might try a search here on POTN for "30D shutter replacement" and see what kind of numbers people mention.

ps... after looking at it, it seems washed out next to yours... but maybe somewhere in between would work. I'd like to see more separation between her hair and the tree trunk... Maybe if you mask the lightening off of her hair too.. that would keep it nice and rich looking, while at the same time softening the BG enough that there is some separation... and let me tell you why . . .
1) save your tweets for twitter, we don't need that stuff here
2) a quick web search tells me exactly what street and house (with street level photos) to follow the UPS truck to to pickup my prize!
3) even if you are home to get the pkg. now me and all the other freaks out there know what kinda stuff to look for when we pillage your home.

Kenny, here's my quick-n-dirty, over the top laptop edit, with all the sliders turned up to 11. Hope you don't mind.
I don't mind at all... My original version was HDR'd, but I felt the one posted was a bit more natural. And I did not feel like color matching the area where it halo'd underneath the prop. ;) Just a little lazy I guess because I wasn't entirely happy with it.

For some reason... I always want to do B&W with this family... here's their daughter...
That is indeed a great picture to me. I am left wondering what area is "soft"? Is it the skin smoothing or PP overdone, or is the image not "sharp"? If not "sharp" I don't see it on my monitor.

I think it's a little of everything. The image originally really wasn't that sharp to begin with... which makes me mad... but that's a different topic... lol

I will say Tempe camera seems unusually busy. I'm going on 3 weeks for a lens repair, and they called today it will be another week. It took the first week just to get the part price, a week for delivery (??) and then it needs to get in the Que... Oh well hopefully by the holiday.
So if you decide to drop it off there it may be a while for even an estimate. Or who-knows, maybe you'll get lucky.
Has anyone ever used C.R.I.S? Any thoughts or opinions?

I know a guy who knows a guy who has a friend who heard about this story:
Guy comes home from work and notices a strange car in front of his house (kinda small crappy car) so he drives past his house and turns around to see a strange person leaving HIS front porch with a big brown box under his arm . . .
[I'm going to stop the story here for a minute to say that if you shoot the guy or assault the guy with the box the police will arrest you as well as the guy! and that's no lie]
back to the story, so the owner of the house waiting in his car 50 yards away sees the stranger take a box from HIS front porch and gets into the crappy little can and drives off at which point he gives chase and calls 911. Ends up being a bit of a scary situation with lots of dangerous driving and cutting through parking lots and high speed stuff when the bad guys toss the box out the window and drive over curbs and over yards (places the box owner won't go) to loose the box owner but he gives the license to the 911 operator who keeps telling the guy to stop giving chase or face arrest . . .
So, the moral of the story is even if you didn't post the info. on a public internet forum there are still guys that follow UPS, FedEx trucks and steal stuff from your front porch . . .
So, once again ... I'm just saying.

DEAL ALERT at Staples (some of them) They have 1 TB hardrives on clearance for $69.00
The model is Western Digital My Book Essential Edition.
I believe the SKU is 718037122700
I found the deal at the one in Mesa off Alma and Southern, but they were sold out. The gal checked the computer and said the Tempe store as well as Chandler store had a few left. I purchased mine in Chandler.
I believe this is an "unadvertised Clearance" so I would suggest calling them if your interested.

New glass alert! After much research, I picked up a Tamron 17-50 2.8. According to reviews it is as good as anything out there IQ-wise, and 1/3 the price of the pro-level Nikon. To make it better, I got a smoking deal from the Best Buy Outlet store.
I also pulled the trigger on the brand new Nikon 35 1.8. This one is designed for crop sensor cameras and every reviewer says its a great lens. The best part is it sells for only $200. I'll be trying it out on Saturday night.

Wheels: Yes and a retractable handle.
AUW: Heavy as Hell (It's 30lbs Empty!)
Foam: No but the Sonex in the top has been replaced by an orgainzer with about a dozen mesh pockets. I suppose I could lay the foam over the gear and carefully close the lid though. I'll have to try that.

Gasp! Jay's gear lineup looks just like mine, except I don't have a 1DMkIII, a 5D, 40D, 85, 50, 17-40, 580 EXII, 430 EX or skyports
Hope everyone has a good time tonight. Time for me to go back to the nightmare work schedule.

Great time this evening folks. Thanks for coming out! Ditto what Frank said about doing this more often. Perfect opportunity to swap ideas and gear (right Kristy?)
I've got five I managed ot squeeze something out of:

From today (but not from this evening)!
Taken during the Pocket Wizard Seminar, interesting product but not sure if I can justify the price of the units. Having ETTL is nice, but I've gotten used to manual mode so I'm really debating this.
Too many toys and not enough money!
Nice seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Had a good time in tempe, will look at the attempt at night photography tomorrow!
This seems a little red, but it's late and I should know better than to try to edit when I'm tired.
Nice shots Jay!

OK, I'll bite. I struggled with a lack of creativity this evening but managed to save a few keepers.
I'm going to start out slow with a story and build to my best for the night.
Let's get this party started by telling a story . . .
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2728/4199654690_f141f73861_o.jpg
Wow, this is rough, I think I need a drink . . .
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2761/4198900479_fa5554fbf9_o.jpg
Struggling with very high ISO and very bad light for me . . . so I'll try on camera flash (best I could do with my skills and on camera flash)
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2689/4199654734_8e9ff4d162_o.jpg
I don't know why I like this one, but I do.

I think this might be my best shot of the night.

Thanks Steve. Really nice to meet you face to face after all this time.
If ^^^ is red, it's by the slimmest of percentages. Lovely portraiture!
Nice work Doug. I know why I like that one but then I'm biased. ;)

Wow, great shots all! Steve, love that one from the PW workshop, beautifully done!
I too struggled, but feel like I got a few keepers, even if I did brak out the flash a few times. By the way, Kristy makes a GREAT light stand in a pinch. :p
Inspired by Frank's 'Mobster,' mine comes complete with cheesy Photoshop lighting effects.

The master himself at work. Struggled to get a decent white balance here. Still don't think it is great. I think Hatch has a little Tony Soprano going on here.

Took lots of bridge photos. I got some cool car light trails in some a this spot, but like the strong blue color in this one.

One of my favorites of the night. Love the light here and this brick wall.

This guy was really shy, but we eventually got him to open up a bit for the camera. LOL!

A group of kids came and stood in front of my camera while I was taking pictures of the bridge. And Kristy helped them! Lighting is the on-camera flash and an SB-800 Speedlight held by Kristy camera left. Could have dialed the flash back a stop or so, me thinks.

After you all left, surfer girl Kristina skated by and stopped to say hello. She posed for a few frames without hesitation. This has very little PP. SB-800 Speedlight high camera right.

Thanks again for the invite! Comments and critique welcome. I need to shoot RAW next time. These are all JPEGs with very little PP (except the gangsta).
