So, the Chandler Ostrich Festival is this weekend. Anybody want to meet up at the festival on Sat. afternoon for some afternoon/evening/nighttime photo safari action?

I told Dean today that he should be out there snapping the races.

Just remember that they have a strict dress code cause it is a Family Friendly Show :-P sorry, had to say that since they add it in big letters.

Anyways, they advertise the show for $20 at the door, my buddy said it goes from 3pm-9pm. Try and show up early cause lines tend to be long the last time I went to one. I am getting there as soon as I finish with my volleyball tourny at asu pe west. so I'm hoping for 2pm. I'll be in there with my tripod shooting the cars. But i will have a wristband on so I will have access to go in and out of the show. Last time I went to one they wouldn't let people back in w/o buying a new ticket.

What time?

Should I look for you? Do you want to meet up and sing "why can't we be friends" while listing to the smooth sounds of the band "WAR?"

That's funny...

Probably around 3ish if the wife's up to it. She's not feeling very well.

Looks like we will be there a little earlier. Probably around 2. So we will probably miss the sunset and will be home before.

That's ok though because my cheapo flash set-up came yesterday and I would like to practice with it.

Also, last year they had some stunt type motorcyclist that was pretty cool to photograph..

Thanks so much. These are from Cowboystudio.com... I will never ever order from there again. Overpaid shipping and it took weeks. Also, everything was poorly packed. The whole thing was a mess from the moment I hit "Checkout"..

Yeah, I know it's going to be a learning curve. I need to get one of them.

While taking some of my Honey Bunny, I noticed it was a bit dark, so I set a second flash lower camera right to fill it in a little. One of those reflectors would have been better I'm sure, but overall I'm ok with it.. Lot to learn. :)

Weaksauce that you had problems ordering the lights. :(

If you're hooked on strobes, I recommend taking the plunge and getting some Alien Bee 800s. I use the cheapo lights as fill now. They work well for that!

Good start with the lighting, though. Basically, I adjust the effectiveness of the strobe on the light itself and via my aperture while balancing the bg with my shutter speed.

^^^^ Hatch, those are stunning..!!!^^^^

Never made it anywhere today with the wife not feeling well. I thought we would make the festival, but where only able to make it out to eat and back..

Anyway, while at the restaurant, I was reading a local Gilbert magazine. It had a calendar of events in both Gilbert and Chandler along with some good articles and Great photos.

Here is a link to there website...... (http://www.gogilbert.com/)

I thought it may come in handy for looking into things to do around town. The calendar is near the end of the magazine.

It's fun to play with, and man can you get close to what you're shooting. I have a bunch of images that are either Out of Focus or had motion blur (the wrong kind) due to the cameraman swaying a bit. Next weekend I'm planning on heading to the superstitions to try it some more. I'll definitely be bringing my tripod.

Can't wait for the next headshot session at work, I'm definitely going to use this lens if I have the space.

That sounds like fun Dean but I'm going to drag the wife over to Desert Breeze and do some portrait practice.

A little open shade with speedlight fill, some basic reflector work (got a 5 in 1 a couple weeks ago and been wanting to try it out) and see if maybe I can do a decent "fight the sun" shot with one 600RX off a Vagabond.

Guess I ought to blow the dust off my Sekonic as well.

Good deal. I've read about it and seen some shots on FM... nice lens all around. Use a monopod... easier to move around... keeps you steady. I've adopted using one any chance I get. I picked up this one... it comes with a small sleeve you can clip to you Think Tank belt. It weights less than 1lb and does a great job IMO. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/655319-REG/Induro_471_524_CM24_Carbon_8X_CM_Series.html#speci fications

3,4,6 are my favorites. No 600rx and the VG2? They lack a little "pop" or contrast. It could be the shoot thru umbrella.... soft diffused light? Food for thought... unless you want to match the ambient light... drop your ambient exposure 1/3rd to 1/2 and then bring your strobe up until you have your subject exposed to your taste. This will give you really nice color saturation for your background she/he/they will "pop" off the screen. How cranked up was the speedlight?

I have a backpack from the local military surplus store. Holds a vagabond, 2 lights, cords, power strip, extension cord, and my camera bag. I lash the stands and anything long onto the back, and drape the AB carrying bags full of other things (reflector dishes, grids, etc) over the poles.

Of course, I exercise a buttload so it's not too bad... :)

Picked up one of these at Costco for $20 http://www.handtrucksrus.com/crashdetail.aspx?id=362&cx=wes

Holds the Ranger and I can carry the stand/light/softbox in the other hand. All the shooting gear is around my waist with the Think Tank belt system http://www.thinktankphoto.com/

Kristy will carry a reflector panel and we are set to shoot. Pretty mobile and with the heavy Ranger on the cart... not much weight to carry around.

Started with the 580 @ 1/1 but I think it didn't like that and started getting flakey on me so I backed it off to 1/2 and moved the stand closer.

#7 was 600RX + VB to camera left but IMO, the raking sunlight from camera right was too harsh.

So when you say "contrast" do you mean:
- Not enough separation from the background?
- Not substantial enough of a key/fill ratio?
- Litterally add more Contrast in post?

The speration from the background is fine. You can add more contrast in post (check mail) :) It's the time of day IMO coupled with the soft light of the umbrella. Do you own the deep octa?

So... dropping your ambient exposure will bring in more color from your backgrounds. You can of course shoot/strobe anytime of day but I can tell you from all the sessions we did over the holidays... early morning/late evening produced the best images. The images here are a little flat... so... you could have gone with the subtactive method as well... placing a black panel/flag near your wife to bring up the contrast. But.. this is all minor as I think the images are at a nice point where some post work will really make them shine.

I have the 50-something inch Octa. Too damn big to take out in the field though. I had the 24" square softbox with me.

Yeah, that's pretty trippy...

Probably the wildlife photographer's equivalent of getting a ride with the Blues or the TBirds.

BTW, when I went up to Vegas for that aviation symposium, I was rather suprised to find out that both George Lepp and Moose Peterson are members of ISAP.

Moose gave a great presentation on how he's been bitten by the aviation shooting bug. His efforts to date are solid but not earth shaking.

Then he gave a slide presentation of his wildlife and landscape work. Not a dry eye in the house! Simply Amazing Work. And he does NO cropping of any kind on his wildlife/landsacpe images. 99 out of 100 images are SOOC!

Thanks Frank! I like how the flash makes the flowers pop off the background.

I did the dumbest thing out there. I shot a 5 shot bracket for an HDR shot, then promptly forgot to clear it. I spent the rest of the time struggling with my camera trying to figure out why my exposure was all over the damn place.

It wasn't until I got home and was looking at my shots all together that it suddenly dawned on me.

Jeez, I am such a bonehead sometimes.

My hubby and I spent the weekend down near Tucson. I was hoping to find some wildflowers down there, but no luck. I was amazed at how green the desert was! I'll get some pics posted as soon as I get around to processing.

Nice work everyone! I love the wildflowers!

My darling bride agreed to let me experiment on her in advance of shooting a family friend tomorrow afternoon and here's the pick of the litter. Please shred these at will...

Vigorous C&C Welcome...

#3 and 6 for me.... The others have too much going on in the way of shadows on her face and the background... (sorry.. i can be picky).

Hatch is right that if you underexpose the background, you'll be happier with the pop of your subject. I would meter the bg and go under by a bit, and then use the flash to illuminate the subject.

Using camera flashes outdoors in full sun can be difficult.. you are trying to overpower the sun with a source that isn't quite strong enough for hte job, so the results can be less than perfect IMO.... but I have a problem with expectations.

Really difficult to shoot when the sun is too sunny unless you are in a fully shaded area with the light bouncing back into your subject from the concrete. :) Reflectors for fill work nicely in this situation, and you could use your camera flash to give it a teensy bit of pop.. dial it down to -1/3 or -2/3 depending.. and bare flash will work.

Always remember when shooting women folk... ;) we like lots of soft light on our faces.. it makes us look *younger* and more radiant... a sure hit with any girl I know... shadows on our faces in the wrong places... just don't make us happy... (hee he)

Hope that helps a teensy bit.. I think Hatch did a great job of giving you the more "technical" side of what I just said.. but hey.. I'm a chick.. what'd ya want? lol...

Quick edit.. . tighter crop as the polka dots command more attention.... and boost saturation, contrast, warm it up.... little curves adjust...? I think the shots have the ability to clean up nicely.. but also
think you can perfect it more in camera to save time on the back end... ?

Before and after follows..... Hope you don't mind.. I can remove it if you like.. just say the word... (too warm maybe... ?)

Need some help. I am ready to get serious about the business of photography and I think I will form a LCC. Is that good, bad? Opinions? Also I am thinking of registering my business name with the trade mark office. What do you have set up as a business? Anything specific to AZ I should know?
Do you carry liability insurance? For equipment and liability insurance, who do you recommend?

Also I am looking for a good accountant, lawyer, any recommendations in the east valley? My bank (Chase) offered some help with the LLC set up. Is that good?

Why not just a DBA? I wouldn't think theres that much liability, and I don't think the LLC would protect 100% sole proprietorship.

Beautiful pics kids.

Here's my contribution to St. Patty's day.

"An Irishman is never drunk as long as he can hold onto one blade of grass to keep from falling off the earth."

I'm off to break in the new 7D at Val Kilmer's mom's house. She called me out of nowhere and told me her Joahua tree is blooming. Something she has not seen in the 20+ years she has lived at her ranch.

I just got back from a quick drive out to Bartlett Lake. I didn't have my camera with me but there were flowers everywhere! Anyone up for a wildflower outing on Friday or Saturday?

It's one heavy SOB but it balances really well and the mass actually makes panning pretty smooth. You just have to start sooner and follow through because once it starts swinging, it doesn't want to stop!

Hey Jay, I have some questions on shooting in Tucson tomorrow you may be able to help with.

I'll have my 30D and 7D with me.

I'll also have my 400mm F/5.6L and my 70-200 F/2.8L IS.

I could also bring a lower-end 100-300 I have.

Will my 70-200 have enough reach on either of my cameras? (1.6 crop)

I figured I would check out a couple spots while down there, trying to get as close as safely/properly/legally possible.

Hi Scott,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner but I litterally just walked in the door from Tucson Day 1 and am dumping images off as I type this.

We pretty much divided our time today between "The Guardrail" (Alvernon + Contractors Way area) and "Wilmot" (Valencia & Wilmot .. just east of the Pima Museum entrance) because the winds were very fickle and they flipped the runways several times.

Tomorrow (Friday) may just be more of the same so I'd bring everything you've got because different locations call for differing amounts of glass.

We don't know for sure yet but there is a possiblity that the Guardrail may be closed from 1pm to 3pm for TBirds practice since it's fairly close to directly under their flightpath. For sure the "Contractors Way" spot will be closed then.

We'll be at "The Hill" starting at around 8am or so and then moving to "The Guardrail" after around 11am after the sun moves a bit.

Check your PM for some reference to all of the above...

Hope we see you down there tomorrow.

- Jay

Parents were out visiting and wanted to go to Sedona so went with them to try out the new Tamron 17-50 f2.8 with hoya filters. First time shooting and that in almost a year so need to get back in the hang of things a little. Wish I had more time to make a few stops but the traffic with construction sucked
