Some more great flowers and absolutely wonderful portraits..!!

Here's a few portraits I took yesterday. I think I understand now why there is a bird section on POTN.. Very enjoyable way to spend some time..

I plan on going back just to look for this beautiful white bird on the left. I have no idea what it is..

http://www.aerial-perspectives.com/photos/827328786_N3C8s-XL.jpg

The colors/tones in the large shot on the left are fantastic. Would make for a cool metallic print... I think? Nice captures!

The guy in the photo...
All the cool stuff to help him blend in to the surronding area... but... a white hat? LOL Then again... he is on the shore so.. not really working hard to not be seen.

Happy Easter Everyone! Here is my addition to all the flower shots. I took these at my in-laws house in Sun City this afternoon. These were taken with my new 7D and the cheap nifty fifty. I also had a Kenko Extension Tube on the 50mm for most of the shots. The fist one is slightly cropped, the rest are straight out of the camera. For $80 this lens does a hell of a job, no wonder it's nick named the "nifty fifty". Enjoy!

Many thanks. The floating shot... looking back we should have used a contrasting material to cover the bench... it was just an idea I had to light her from above with the large softbox.... will know better next time.

The light stand was holding the fabric:)

OK, who here has a carbon tripod, and what do you like/dislike about what you have?

My head is spinning from all the choices. I need something that will neatly fit in my Tamrac backpack's tripod holder and support the weight of the ROTM Canon camera with L glass.

I have an Induro CX214 (http://www.indurogear.com/products/details.asp?ID=417) that I got at Tempe Camera paired with a Manfroto 488RC2 ball head and it works very well for everything but my two "bazookas."

Those are gonna need a Gitzo / Wimberly rig. :(

I'm very happy with this one:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=664575&highlight=Benro+C-269M8+Travel+Angel+Carbon+Fiber+Tripod+with+B-1+Ballhead

I like it because it's compact and light for traveling (fits in carry-on luggage), and I mainly use it for hiking. It has been through some beating since I got it, but it's still very stable. You could probably spend more money on a super ballhead (Gitzo, RRS, Kirk etc.), but that's beyond my budget for now.

Can't wait.. I didn't want to upgrade from CS3 to CS4, but I think theres enough with this new version to be worth it...

Also, I'm bidding on a 2 year photo contract. I lost the last one due to some crazy pricing, so I hope not to loose this one. I cut it to the bare minimum in the hopes of getting some volume.. Wish me luck. :)

That's a sweet looking tripod, but I was wanting to go smaller. Flashpoint makes a carbon that folds down to 18" and still goes to 55". They also make incrementally larger tripods. Not too bad, but I can't really find any great reviews on them.

I hve the 488CR2 ball head and really like that on my current tripod, which by the way, I have created a sling for and I carry it on the motorcycle like a hunting bow. Not the most graceful setup, hence my need for a nice, compact carbon.

And that Gitzo stuff.....What the hell? It's crazy expensive and looks spindley. What are they doing different to support all the weight?

From the Arizona Game and Fish Dept Wildlife news:
Calling all photographers

Spring is in the air, wildflowers are blooming, and Arizona wildlife is ready for its close-up. So pull out your camera gear and lace up your hiking boots — it’s time to start taking pictures for the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s annual wildlife photo contest.

Winners earn a coveted spot in the 2011 Arizona Wildlife Calendar, plus courtesy copies of the calendar and cash prizes. All pictures must be of Arizona wildlife and must be taken in Arizona. We’re looking for images of birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and mammals; no insects (including butterflies), please!

To make the contest super-easy to enter, we’ve gone completely digital. No need to make prints, and we don’t accept slides! We’re looking for high-quality photographs, so we encourage people to use a digital camera that is 6 megapixels or larger. Get familiar with your owner’s manual to set your camera at the highest level of quality possible (on some cameras, this setting is called “super fine”).

The deadline for submissions to this year’s wildlife photo contest is July 9 at 5 p.m. MST. There is no fee to enter, so mark your calendar and start shooting.

For complete contest rules and an entry form, visit www.azgfd.gov/photocontest.

Wow... Great Bee shots..!!
Great Lizard Shots..!!
Great Crazy Cat Shots..!!
And wonderful Flower additions..!!

Wish I had time to catch that garage sale. Anything good sell? Anything left over?

Went to V-eterans-O-asis park in Chandler. We did this location from "Dirt to Done" it was an over 18 month project.

I stopped in today to see some of the prints on the wall, and to my disappointment, it looked like they were not holding up very well at all. They wanted cheap prints and mounting, so it looks like they got what they paid for. The unfortunate thing mainly is that my name is on it. I may call and offer to either repair some of them or replace. The only reason is because I wouldn't want people judging the work by these prints.

Anyway, if you never saw the location, here it is from above..(A while back)

2.8 macro. seems cool so far. but way too windy for me to play outside. I have the next two days off from the zoo so I gotta find some place nearby to play with it. but I'm thinking I wanna trade it for a canon 50 1.4 cause I do have this other cheap macro from an old sigma lens and a closeup filter...at least that has a reach at 90mm.

Quick question for you all...probably a total noob question...since I really am still a noob a this stuff.

I took this photo this evening and when I went to darken the sky in PS, I now have these color bands. Any help as to what causes that and how to avoid or fix it? I used a gradient overlay after the shadow and highlight tool. Shot it as a Fine JPG.

Thanks in advance.

Dean, I'm guessing somewhat but I'd say it maybe has a little bit to do with:
- Starting in JPEG and not RAW (less overall data)
- Working in 8-bit and not 16-bit in PS (again, data depth)
- Possibly not having a smooth enough gradient as the overlay (possibly a slightly banded gradient to begin with)

Dean,

Jay is correct. The banding is caused because you are loosing the finer gradients between values of the same color. Using a greater bit depth, as in shooting RAW, helps preserve those "steps" between color.

Michael,

Great work!

Very nice, Michael! Would you mind sharing your processing for the mailboxes? I would like to use a look similar to that, but I still haven't figured out how to do it in PS.

Jay and Brian, thanks! I figured as much, but it seems like it happens sometimes and not others.

Jay - could you expand briefly on the 8 vs 16-bit in PS thing? I know I can switch modes, but when and why? Should I always switch to 16-bit when I open a new file? Are certain files going to come in as 8 or 16 to start with (i.e. JPG/RAW)? I feel like I should already know this. :( I probably have read it somewhere at some point. This is what happens when you are entirely self-taught. Some of the basics fall through the cracks.

Color management is another topic that I am starting to need to know and I haven't much of a clue about.

Michael O
13th of April 2010 (Tue), 13:02
Thanks Dean, the processing was just some curve and levels adjustments, and then sharpened edges and unsharp mask. I really don't have a set way of processing, I just play with settings and adjustments until I like what I see, specially since photography and processing is so subjective.

BTW, I only shoot RAW and do all the processing in 16 bit. The way I figured, the more info the photo has the better.

I could be wrong... and probably am... but you should just be able to open up your RAW file in PS. Go to 'Image', then 'Mode', then switch from 8bit to 16bit. Might even work for JPEG files. I'm not entirely sure though either. I've never really researched all this. Just kinda did what I wanted. Haha.

With my limited experience I would say a little Tequila goes a long way . . .

Oh, commmmmmme on it's a joke!

I would say of all the lens listed in your signature your 100-400 is the one lens to leave at home when trying to photograph children.

Bounce on camera flash???

Bounce off what? The moon? The sky? The trees in the park?

Put your 24-70 on and "talk" to the girl, have a conversation with this young lady and treat her like a person.

If she doesn't want to behave maybe her parent can calm her down enough so the two of you can work together.

I don't really know much about photographing children, so my advice is just a random opinion of a goofball on the internet.

This is old, and not very good, but you get the idea.

Busy chatters around here.. I swear I'm always behind on the thread.. :)

Cute little kiddo.... :) Is she a friend or relative?

Honestly I can't freeze them when they are running around. I don't even try. I engage in conversation, and act super silly.. I put toys on top of my lens, or on my head, or do anything that makes them look at me... I don't care if they smile or not.. as long as they engage.

I don't typically ever bribe with candy. Kids are pretty easy to entertain, if you just find that "something" to peak their interest. Say crazy things and then just be quick on the shutter... *shrug* guess that's not much help, huh?

I keep my shutters at 1/200th or more if possible.. and stop down the aperature some to allow for bits of movement.

Hope that helps. If you ever want to play with shooting kiddos, I'm always up for it. :)

It's an open practice? Hmmm...

I was born and raised in Detroit
I'm a hockey fan
Therefore I must be a Red Wings fan!

So, they wouldn't care if I rolled in with the 300 or 500?

AZAlphaDog
13th of April 2010 (Tue), 22:01
I think it's really, really, really dark in there . . .

The 300 f2.8 is required, there is not enough space or light for a 500 f4, but because of the lack of light my guess would be that they don't care what kind of camera you bring, you won't get much.

But that is just my guess . . .

Still it would be good practice and fun to watch, I'll bring a 70-200 f2.8 'cause that is all I got that would be usable under those conditions.

The "tempo" of the practice will likely be dictated by the outcome of Wed. nights playoff game . . . with game 2 being on Fri. night.

It was free today. I assume it's free on Thursday. I saw nothing indicating that there was going to be an admission charge Thursday.

Get there early.

Not bad actually... Good highlights and detail on the weapon and rounds but you need to address the background to get it more homogenous.

I actually managed to get out of the house for a while today in order to give a friend a ride up to Prescott to retrieve his airplane: Thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=857523)

@ doug, lol...didn't they also say nyquil works wonders also? j/k. (haha... no clue, don't have kids...)

yah, next time i'll try using the 24-70. i used the tele thinking that it would be great to have the zoom on the kid to get more candid shots without thinking that lowlight + fast movement = bad combo...

i had her mom with me, but i think since the lil one was couped up inside all day at her daycare being outside was her "brief" moment of freedom before bed time. it was funny though, she would run around insanely and then in an instant crash.

anyway, thanks for the great tips & the cute example!

kind of works for politicians (jk!) but mainly with kids is if you can bribe them to be good :-) candy or toys can help occupy them. just my thoughts

ha...tequila is candy for adults...so same idea :-D
@ ryan, i had thought about picking up a plushy for her; but i ended up being late... stupid 202 santan freeway & backed up traffic...

@ kristy, she's the kid of a friend of mine from middle school (hadn't seen her in like 10 yrs!) i think my friend was still trying to get the "mom life" sink in (she also just had a 6 mo old, who we decided to have her stay in with dad).

haha...i didn't really understand the concept of "having an attention span of a 2 yr old" until i tried shooting her...seriously, its like "ooh pretty!" then 1 sec later, "next item, sippy cup!" :)

thanks for your hints (any type of suggestions are great)! i'll definitely have to take you up on shoot kids offer sometime or maybe we could organize some group thing. :)

Hi all! I've been on the forums for a while and didn't even know about this thread. Looks like I found a new hangout! I've lived in AZ for about 6 years now and haven't really been out due to my work. So I don't really know about the "good" photo spots but I'm looking!

I hope to meet with you all some time.

Three important questions:
1) What's your real name? (We're people friendly here...)
2) What do you like to shoot?
3) Got a website?

1)My name is Matt.
2)Hmm.. that's tough. Pretty much everything. Photography is my hobby that gets me out of the house. I'm very much an amateur when it comes to taking pictures. But I'm always willing to learn. So far I've enjoyed taking landscapes, nature, and macro. I also love taking pics of people, whether it be random or posed. I do want to try shooting motorsports and hockey.
3)Yes I do, but it's still under construction. As soon as I get it to where I want it to be, it will be in my sig.

I guess I should share a little more about myself. I'm an IT admin for a company in Tempe. Our main headquarters are located in Austria. I used to travel there alot, but now I've pretty much been here in Tempe. Unfortunately, I didn't have my 7D during my extended visits in Austria. I also travel once in a while to our other office in Japan. Again, I need to get out there with my 7D. I have shots from there, but this was when I was using a Sony A700 and had very minimal knowledge.
As for my other hobbies, I do some online gaming (World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2 Beta). I used to ride a Harley V-Rod, but had sold it a couple years ago. I miss riding.

Thanks again for the welcome!

You'll fit in here just fine Matt. The bike experience will sit well with several folks!

So I finally drank the Kool Aid and d'loaded the LR Beta 3.2

Nothing immediately jumps out at me as being really better than V2.6 that I have now except for the fact you can now use a graphic as a watermark! I'm Sold...

Well since there may be a few that like to ride, I'll put these pics up. They were taken with my old Sony P&S DSC-W7. I installed all the modifications myself (wide tire kit, wider swingarm, bits and pieces of chrome, etc.). I try not to look at these pics too much .

THIS (http://chdairport.net/dayz.pdf) is the flyer I've seen posted in a couple places around town.

I point out that it has no year on it, but seeing as it's on the bulletin board in the Pilot's Lounge at CHD, I'd have to say it's legit for 2010.

I'm hoping to get over there around 8-830am on Friday to catch the CAF aircraft arriving. I'll try to call them and see if I can get an actual ETA but the poster says open for business at 10am on Friday.
