Everyone bring a couple of "problem" images and we do a gang edit on each to try different ideas.

You guys are funny..... Hey Jeremy.. I forgot to tell you... on one of my adjustments.. (I made 2 separate curves adjustments and one levels...) I brushed on the mask to keep the sides of her face a little darker... around 50% opacity... soft round brush... It makes her face appear a little thinner to have that shadow there... basically the sides of her face, curving down under the cheekbone.. and up at the temple of her face near the hairline on camera left.

Ok, so here's one for the collective brain to chew on...
When I started my Zen Account, I just assumed that in order to generate the largest print size offered, I'd just upload as large an uncompressed image as possible (23.5Mb TIF files...) The really strange thing is that even a 23.5Mb TIF @ 300 DPI would not translate into the largest available print size of 24" x 36"
Not too long ago, out of laziness and not wanting to fire up CS4, I uploaded a full-res JPG straight out of Lightroom and to my amazement, a 7Mb JPEG @ 300 DPI will suffice for every print size available including the largest size.
So now, Everything I send up to Zen will be full-res JPGs...
My Question: Why Is This?

This isn't today's lunch.. I think it's from Christmas vacation. I typically don't have all these kids here on the same day.. a few part timers showed up on an off day..... and school-age kids were on vacation.. lol.. but yeah.. it's a busy day just the same...

Hey ya'll! I haven't posted or even checked up on this board in a long time. Mainly because I would get so consumed reading everything, that I didn't get anything done!
I would love to hear some honest cc on a few pictures. I did a shoot last weekend with some friends. It's my first time having willing models. I pretty much put them all up, at least the ones I've edited. They still need some work done, like cropping and cloning things.
I put them on flickr and asked my sil to cc but I think she was way critical. Would love to hear what some pros think!!
Here's the link to all of them.

Also, if it's not too much to ask, would you mind leaving some positive feedback on flickr. My friend is kind of hurt by some of the comments. I know they were meant for me but since she was in the pics, it's hard not to take them personally.

I like those. They look like a fun couple to photograph. I'm sure someone else will be able to crituque it more... since I'm still learning, but they look good.
Also, I was reading some of the comments "hmetivier" was leaving, a bit harsh, you weren't kidding.
But... sometimes harsh criticism can be a good thing. She/He/It just needs to learn how to do it a bit more... gently. :)
As we all know, Practice Makes Perfect. :D

If there is one thing I have learned over the years of putting my photos on the wonderful internet... you will always have someone out there who likes nothing more than to say mean things.
My suggestion... this is just what I do... you can do your own thing of course... :) I look at the persons work... if they have any posted.... and I make the call to take what they are saying as a valued comment or not. If they are not producing my level of work or better... I just move on. The person saying harsh things on Flickr doesn't even have a gallery... it's easy to hide behind the computer and say mean things.
Another suggestion for Flickr.... just upload the photos where only family and friends can see the images... you can still link them to forums and share them with others. This helps cut down on the nut jobs. I've started doing this because some of my photos were being saved or commented on by pervs....
Now... the photos...
#1 I like the pose/scene.... maybe shooting them a little closer would have helped with the connection to the photo. I like the compositon..... they just look really small in the frame.
#2 I like it... maybe a little levels adjustment to being them out of the shade a little more... and a slight crop to get them out of the center.... or even a square crop.
#3 Nice capture... looks like they are having fun. Maybe a slight crop to the right to help the composition... I feel the the plants are a little dominate in the scene.
When it is all said and done... it is your client who matters... and if they are happy with the work... then you have done your job. We (photographers) look at images and pick them apart... people who do not shoot... don't see what we see.
I for one am always learning... and love feedback from others... but... I go back to rule #1... if your work sucks... don't tell me what I need to work on. :)
I'm sure they like the photos and in the FLickr set... you have several nice shots. I like the use of DOF in you images(gate shots).
Hope this helps.

You crack me up.... I would go broke if I shot film.... the "delete" button is the best thing on my camera!
I think it is solid advice... We have solid shooters in this group and I listen to them.... I have people who comment on my stuff in other forums and the same rule applies... if you suck... don't critique my work. I tend to not reply to them and move forward. :) If your work is solid... I listen and learn. I think places like this and others have taught me tons and tons.... so thankful for the people who have helped me along the way.
In hgsfrmme2u's case... you have someone commenting on photos who doesn't have work posted... I say... show me yours...I'll show you mine. ROFL!!! Sick people... I know what you are thinking!

Thanks all. The person leaving the comments was my sister in law. I asked her for input, didn't really expect what I got though. Guess I should be careful what I ask for. ;) Guess I was looking more for comments on my composition and processing rather than where my models hands were.
She's said before that she loves photography and has "the eye" for it but doesn't have the camera knowledge. I've really only seen snapshots from her so I couldn't say either way.
That's great advice Hatch. I know we all have our own styles and since I haven't really seen any pics from my sister in law, I don't know what her style is.
Thanks again!

No worries Becky. :) Next time you go out to shoot... put the camera in her hands.... it's another world as you know. :)

To exand on what Frank has said:
I've often found that some people "target" good images to find fault. There is a variety of reasons for this, but in my opinion a lot of it comes from insecurity. It makes them feel better about their own work, by degrading others.
If you look at the very good photogs, they usually can provide critique, and not criticism. They don't feel threatened by you, so they can give you more direct and focused feedback.

wow, lots of great stuff! Becky, I think your set is great! I'm not really a "people person" as you can tell from my flickr page, but I really like your set there. Looks like SIL isn't very constructive (put her on your ignore list). I like how she has the "eye" but can't run the camera! LOL! I like Hatch's advice! Put her work up against yours, sounds like she was just out to tear you down, sounds like she is jealous of what you can do with the camera!

hahhahahaha!! So funny that no one knows....
HEY BECKY!!!! :) I love the journalistic feeling of your shots.. I've been watching on FB..... I read through 4 comments by your SIL... and honestly... I think she thinks... she is being constructive. I read the first four... only.. and it is so difficult to read tones in written words... it sucks... lol.. But I'm feeling like she is trying to be helpful, and not malicious at all.... If it were me, I'd take it as constructive, and enjoy the view from another person's shoes.... but not dwell on it... I love to see things through other eyes.... trained or not trained... to see it in a different light gives me perspective. So I actually appreciate negative feedback... weird I know.. but it helps... lol..
FWIW... I like your shots... :) Some are a bit dark, and perhaps some are a bit not relaxed as your SIL stated.. but they are real people, not models.. and you did an amazing job with them... so keep doing what you do, and smile just knowing that it is so worth it. :)

Lets just hope it comes back to San Diego. There was talk when it was over it might move to either San Francisco or Rio De Janero (sp?). I guess both those cities are pushing hard to get the race there and the SD turnout wasn't as high as usual.

If you use a tripod or monopod then the IS won't be an issue, but if you handhold then it really helps. My limit hand held is about 200 mm.

Azyiu,
1 softbox for the first pic. Placed above the bike, and as close as I could get it without having it in the frame. The strobe was on it's lowest setting, which was giving me a meter reading of f/9 on top of the bike. Because of the inverse square law, by the time the light had reached the bottom of the tank it had dropped to around f/2.8.

I have a flickr, facebook, and a myspace - all of which should be in my signature... anyways, I'm looking forward to meeting some/all of ya'll and getting together for some photowalks or meetups or something along those lines...

Wow! Thanks for the info. So one more dumb question from this newbie. What exactly is the inverse square law? :o And so instead of shooting @ f/9 as your lights indicated, you shot the set @ f/2.8? Am I getting that right? Did you use a light meter or is it necessary at all?

damn had my first shoot today that I have no idea what happened. I've done parking garage shoots before with my car and friends no issues. Anyway this weekend I had someone that want me to shoot a Mystic Chrome Cobra ( color changing paint) and I'm lost. I positioned the car like normal and somehow it seems like it focused on the rays of light instead of the car. The rims and most of the car are out of focus etc. I'll post up pics when i get off today. The other car I did right after with the same lens the pics came out and when I did both cars togther they came out. I'm guessing it was just the way the lens caught the light. I'm pissed and more embarrashed that I ended up with very few pics.
Oh yea on a side note need to edit out a persons head from inside the car but having issues with the front window and light glare (person was inside to have the nitrous purging out the cobra emblem on front of car)

As light travels, it's intensity weakens. The inverse square law will tell you by how much. Basically, doubling the distance light has to travel causes it's intesity to fall it to 1/4 of it's original intensity.
Because my light was so close to the top of the bike, it doesn't have very far to go to "double" the distance. That is why the bottom area of the tank is so dark, as well as the front of the bike is black. I hung a black cloth about 2 feet in front of the bike.
I used a light meter. I metered for the area that I wanted to be properly exposed. That read f/9. Since I shot at f/9 the area that were only getting f/2.8 amount of light they showed up dark. If I had shot it at f/2.8 the "dark" areas would have been properly exposed and the top of the bike would have been way overexposed and blown out.

Tough one to price....
Number of visitors a month?
Would you have your name on the image? (odds are no? )
She could buy microstock and spend $20 and own the image
She could pay for real stock and spend $250-$1k for the image.
$50 is pretty cheap... maybe $150 for a year...$200 for two years?
She is using your image to make money.... so....

Have a look at the demo.... I think it is functional... and you can price out your image use.

I decided to go $100 for two years. That's probably a tad low but eventually I'll get "digital downloads" set up on Zen and I'll price accordingly over there. Hell, she may not even bite at this price. We'll see.
Migrating the best of what's on PBase to Zen is very high on my to do list once I'm home for the balance of the summer.
Truth be told, it was a Oh What The Heck grabshot while motoring over Sky Harbor enroute to Prescott for breakfast one morning.

Doesn't matter that it was a grabshot, they'll be using the image to generate revenue (much more than $100). So the value of the image is not determined by how it was created (even if shot in green box with a point and shoot) but by how much of an impact the image will have on the prospective customers. Just my 2 cents... but congratulations on the sale of the image.

Good points Steve...
I failed to take into account the Value Added for her. Hmmm... Well, if she balks, I'll remind her of the fact that I'm (cheaply) aiding her ability to make a living.
Rookie mistake .. Lesson Learned
Thanks.

She wants to turn this one into a Banner Ad (I assume by cropping to a short but wide Pano):

Awesome shot Jay. Aren't there more buildings now? Like an all glass one/shiny one? All I know is that I get distracted by something shiny over there while driving the I-10.

There are some 10 story edifices near the ballpark but you might be thinking of the new copper-clad University of Phoenix building that's more or less accross I-10 from Sky Harbor?

I think so...
It's actually smaller and lighther than I thought it would be. Given that the 135 is one leg of the so called "Holy Trinity" of primes, I think I expected the 135 to have the heft of the 85L or the Brick. Actually it's not much heavier than the 85 1.8. Bonus for walking around. :D
One thing I never realized is that the filter size is 72mm and not 77mm. Guess I'll eventually need a 72 -> 77 step up ring.
It's now the longest lens I have without IS and I can tell that I'll need to square up and shoot from a solid base to avoid shake if I let the SS fall below 1/125 or so. IS has spoiled me...
Good thing the 5D has such good NR. No hesitation to bump the ISO to 400 this afternoon. ;)
I'll get a better feel for it if I can point it at some people and other stuff in Charlotte this weekend.
I'll be curious to see what the results are like from the MkIII and the 40D as well. 180-esque is a good length (IMO) via the MkIII. 210-ish on the 40D could be interesting as well plus it's a stop faster than the 70-200 @ f/2.8.
I think my evil plan to build as much flexability into my gear is coming together nicely. If nothing else, perhaps I can start a rental operation!!

The hell with A/C .. I wanna go play with the F16s! Were you down at Sierra Vista again or are you working in Hatch's backyard these days?
So here's something interesting...
Unremarkable shot of my street at sunset with the 135 @ f/4:

Then I started peeping around the edges and pulled this 100% crop:

The truly remarkable thing? Basic, default input sharpening in LR .. Exported to CS4 .. Cropped and saved as jpg but NO output sharpening at all...
I think I may have found some W:shock:W factor early on...

LOL about the "WOW" It is seriously sharp.... my sharpest lens by a long shot... (Sigma 180mm macro is right there... maybe a little sharper) looks like you are having fun with it.
I found out after shoot... shutter speeds need to be at least 1/160th for me... maybe a little less.... but.. I missed several shots in a series shooting lower than I should have been. Not cooL!
The weight is nice... not heavy as you mentioned..... love the speed ... really locks focus quick.
Have fun and post some more shots.

I haven't been down to Sierra vista for a while, was out at 51st and dobbins the last 6 or 7 months and no I am at Luke AFB rewiring the runways and taxiways. here is a question for you, why is directly behind the F-16's while they are taxiing is the quietest place? the front intake is earshattering caming at you, but when the jet exhaust is pointing straight at you it is almost silent? (hotter than hell, but very quiet) We are about to start a project turning the 143 back into 44th street. dunno why they would want to go from a freeway to a surface street, but they want to pay someone to do it so it might as well be me!
