Thanks for the replies. :)

Would my 100mm macro work well enough? Since I still don't have a telephoto.

You're not going to get a whole lot of compression with a 100, no...

Your best bet is to try and find a spot where you can catch the moon just as it breaks the horizon.

Keep in mind though that Moonrise times are generally given for Sea Level so at altitude, the actual rise may come a little later than posted.

Last time I tried out at Canyon Lake, the moon didn't clear the mountains until about 15 minutes past the published rise time.

Just get to your spot a little early and be ready!

Well damn. Haha. I guess I'll just have to play with it and see what happens.

Kristy and Kenny - thanks for giving it a try with my shot. I think 'vintage' is the way to go too, but I just haevn't found quite the look I want yet. I appreciate you guys taking some time with it though.

Is this where we Arizonans say Hello? New member here, I'm from Kingman (northwest part of the state). I am a photojournalist but my first passion is wildlife photography. *waves to FlyingPhotog*

Can anyone recommend a book that can help me out with composition? Seeing things more creative in a different way? I'm trying to expand my creativity behind the lens. If there is anything you can recommend please share! Also any good books for help on posing?

Joe McNally's The Moment It Clicks (http://www.amazon.com/Moment-Clicks-Photography-secrets-shooters/dp/0321544080) offers some pretty good insights into how one of the better creative minds works.

Posing is a little tougher without knowing what type of photography...
- Boudoir ?
- Kids ?
- Fashion ?
- Couples ?

welcome! why the switch to canon (even though I'm not disapproving it :-P)

The change as driven by a few things, t2i video quality, lens availability, t2i ergonomics, 18mp (mp count didn't have a lot to do with it), stereo mic input, mac compatible camera control software.

I had one for about a week and loved it but returned it to save $120 with bing cashback from TigerDirect.

This helps some what to get started. Link (http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=2930)

For general learning and sometimes a laugh or two i follow "Dombower" on youtube. he does some really good reviews, tutorials, and vlogging.

If you wanna go further I have Blue Crane Dvd's for Nikon and they were great so I would recommend this one: Link (http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Canon-Speedlite-580EX-430EX/dp/B0024JPE2E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1279340748&sr=8-1)

Lilminijpc: Yep, photojournalism puts hamburger on the table (though not a lot- you don't go into this biz if you want to make tons of cash, as I've found out! :D) But it helps pay for fun stuff like the wildlife photography (which I can also get paid for on occasion- every now and then they'll let me do something on local wildlife....in fact I'm heading out for a Game and Fish-sponsored desert bighorn sheep workshop in a few weeks along the Colorado River- and it's for the newspaper, so I'll get paid for it! (as well as just being fun for me :))...

Taken in Puerto Rico at the "National Historic Site" near "El Morro". I loved being there as I was born there, but the living conditions are horrible.

You can debate the Apple issue from now 'til doomsday but I have to say that as a portable portfolio, it's pretty kick azz! Should be very handy for showing off while at Oshkosh.

Exporting 2048X @ 100% Quality sRGB with the iPad taking them down by 50% to 1024x, the images look great! Colors are on the money and B&W is crisp and contrasty!

Frank, that 35L looks like a winner.

I should be getting my iPad in the next couple weeks. A buddy of mine found a really cool stand for them. If you have a booth, or other area where you want a video slideshow, the iPad looks like it would fit the bill nicely. The only issue I can see is making sure it doesn't go "mobile" on it's own.

I like this one the best. You just gotta love working with a model that has perfect skin and needs very little touch-up . . . Either that or you did a really good job on the post on these, the skin still looks like skin and she still looks like a real person.

I would be a bit nervous working with a 17 year old girl, but these shots look very well done and commercially viable, unlike most of the other stuff I see out there.

Nicely done.

Thanks, I think that is my favorite of the set also. She does have great skin and I had to do very little post. As far as working with a 17 years old, not nervous at all, her mom was there (and she stayed out of the way while we were shooting) plus she was very professional and new what she wanted. Easy to work with.

It's not light painting, it's setting Steel Wool on fire! not as simple as waving a flashlight about . . .

Yes, it is very cool looking and I for one would like more details on the application, but seems like something you can only get away with in a few places.

Thanks, I like your wildlife gallery! I'm jealous about your Colorado River trip!

:)
Here's a preview in anticipation of that trip- it's not the Colorado River, but it is a bunch of pics of some wild sheep that live near the River... there's a park not far from the Hoover Dam where I get a lot of nice bighorn shots at every summer:

I posted several of these recent shots in the wildlife forum (Not sure if I should post stuff here or there? But I read in the forum rules they don't want you posting stuff in more than one place, so I'll just link to it here:)
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=903975

I can't wait for the trip in a few weeks! I've done it before but the last trip was several years ago. It can be amazing to see these sheep plunging down steep cliffs at breakneck speed just in order to see who can drink at the river's edge first! These bighorns are unreal sometimes.

:) As Jay mentioned.. she is my wife. She is headed to Vegas very soon for a figure competition... then she will soften up some ( a good thing)

Well... I have found with my wife... I have to set a trap.... "Hey... how about some pizza?" then I bust out the camera and snap away. LOL

Other times... if you just walk up to a person and let them know what you are doing... working on your skills... would you mind if I take a photograph of you... 99% I have asked had no problems and they even will bust out a pose. On Mill Ave the last time we were out as a group... I had 2 guys say no... other than that... had fun shooting.

Yesterday was more of a lens test than anything... and it was good to test it out.. as it has a slight front focus even after adjusting... needs one more little tweak. :)

Off to photograph a 3 month old with Kristy... good times! At least it is indoors... AFRICA HOT out at the moment.

Wow, such a busy thread.... Welcome new folks and great pictures all..!!

Just got back last-night from my northern trip.

I had an amazing time. I met some very interesting people along the way.
My route took my to:
1.) Horseshoe bend
2.) Monument Valley for Sunset
3.) Monument Valley Sunrise and then Park drive.
4.) Mile Marker 13
5.) Lower Antelope Canyon
6.) Glen Dam for evening shots
7.) Owl Canyon
8.) Rattlesnake Canyon
9.) Upper Antelope Canyon.

I am soooo glad I cancelled the first tour and went with Carol Bigthumb. I strongly recommend it if anyone goes out that way for a tour. I basically had the tour to myself and 2 other gals for the first 2 canyons. Then we picked up a couple from Austria and Arizona Highways magazine who was there scoping out a spot for a new fisheye lens test.

A great time had, but I don't think I would be so aggressive next time I get out that way. I did way to much driving and I'm pretty tuckered out.

Anyway, thanks for all the pre tips.

I put some more edits here in this gallery...... (http://www.aerial-perspectives.com/Travel/Southwest/Southwest/12979929_2jcbf#938945323_KrqbF)

Then there was this Dumbass kid. The wind was gusting and I was nervous for him. When they got the photo he was looking for he mentioned something about putting it on FB..

Very nice work from up north AP.

The Antelope Canyon looking up with the driftwood accross the frame is excellent and the Native American on horseback is money.

Did you find you preferred Upper or Lower Antelope?

Did you find you preferred Upper or Lower Antelope?

Thanks..! You know,,,,,,,, I think I preferred Lower, and the Rattlesnake Canyon. They seemed to let your mind wander the most looking at all the different formations. I was in the lower literally alone for 2 hours. I found myself almost crawling on the ground and squeezing into tight places to get creative shots. The only limiting factor was the light. I think it's best to have no direct light at all shining on the walls. I would do it again. The upper was nice and all,but way to crazy. Our tour guide seemed to have the respect of all the other guides and they directed traffic away from us all throughout the canyon. I think this is why the Az Hwy folks selected this guide as well. He was very professional and knew "exactly" how to photograph every area. He was starting another business out there call AZ Sunset photography with a few other natives.

Cool. Pizza is a great "bribe". :)

[quote=-AP-;10560263]Wow, such a busy thread....

Wow! great shots! Some very beautiful, classic photos of Monument Valley and nearby areas there.
I have a question- where'd that owl come from? Did you just spot it out there and get that photo? If so, very cool! Nice shot, regardless.
Also- if you don't mind sharing, what program do you use for your photo gallery? It looks very nice, and I'm thinking of trying to update my website with something really professional. So I'm looking around at other photographer's websites and seeing what they've done.

Thanks, yes, the Owl was in a place called Owl Canyon. It was on the way to Upper Antelope. They gave me this access as a freebee. While walking in you had to be very quit. There were a few of them making noise, but we were only able to see this one up on the rock.

I use Smugmug for my galleries. It works for me mainly because I use it as an avenue to allow clients instant downloading from private galleries.

What you see there is pretty much a shell. I think several folks have Zenfolio which has many nice features. I tried it out once, but prefer old faithful. It's mainly because I'm to lazy to learn a new format and change things over.

There is a good thread around here that compares most of them, and while searching I found this....

That's a great first time capture. Congrats.. Are you way up high? It looks like there may be little houses on the bottom with lights on. I need to start scoping out spots in the Valley. I was thinking about South Mountain where the Rustlers Roost Restaurant is. That seems pretty high and covers a fair amount of the valley

Great baby picture, and nice moonshot! I also got myself one of those triggers, and tonight was my first attempt. From my balcony, not a great foreground, but at least it works! On the first I used 2 seconds, on the second I used 4. Should I increase the shutter time to get brighter foreground, or increase the ISO? Also, I need to work on the infinity sharpness I believe.

Sweeeettt... I'm no lightning expert, but I prefer to use florescent white balance, manual focus usually with my 10-22 @ f3.5 and anywhere from 4-6 seconds depending on conditions. If I raise the f-stop, my shutter speed increases accordingly. I never usually go above iso 100. I have a big street light in front of my house so sometimes I need to block that light with my hand to avoid triggering the trigger.

And oh, Those are great shots too..!! Love the second one..

Thanks, yes Bing is a great program but as of August 1st it will be gone. It was great timing for my Nikon to Canon change. I saved $300 ish dollars in the switch with Bing off rock bottom prices to make it even better. Figured the money I saved can help start my 70-200mm fund.

Here is something I can add, I took it about 4 months ago, really stormy sky so I ran for the camera.

Thanks Kenny, I'll see how it works next time. Tomorrow, perhaps? I set the WB to 3200 in LR, good thing with raw files. I guess setting the focus to infinity manually and leave it there doesn't work if the lightning is closer than infinity? So getting the lightning sharp is more pure luck? Maybe I misunderstand. But thanks again :)

Wow! Cool lightning shots guys... I'm a little jealous... I would love to try it sometime. Just never have clear opening from where I live.

It's not light painting, it's setting Steel Wool on fire! not as simple as waving a flashlight about . . .

Yes, it is very cool looking and I for one would like more details on the application, but seems like something you can only get away with in a few places.

I would try to get them in more shade.. the older girl has some shadowing across her forehead that would bother me if it were my image. Not sure if you were using fill flash or not....? ANd if your shutter speeds were slow... it's teensy bit soft.. but a nice image of the kiddos just the same. I like the color pop edit. :)

I must've fallen asleep or something last night... my wife came in and said "you missed the storm" and I checked Radar and saw that it was moving west

Great shots by all.

Just curious - some of you mention a trigger. Are you using a arduino circuit that actually senses the feeler strike and trips the shutter for the main? or are you simply using a shutter release?

The pink hue you're getting on the long shots is due to the AWB seeing light contamination from the city lights. I sometimes switch to Tungsten for some heavy Blue / Yellow combinations

here's one from last year using Tungsten WB

By pretty much all accounts, the 7D is the superior tool.

(Not that I'm trying to be an enabler here or anything...)

Look and see if there's a "Batteries Plus" near you Ryan. They should have them as well...

It's where I got the one replacement I needed and I also get the "wafer" style batteries for my SkyPort Transmitter.

Get the 7D! I started with an XSi then moved to the 50D and finally am happy with the 7D. Don't waste your time like me and just skip to the 7D you won't regret it!

Good choice.. I think you'll love the camera. It took me a while to get used to the autofocus system. Actually, I'm still learning it but I have gotten much better.

There are TONS of videos out there.. Better get started before it arrives. It may be a good idea to get the online manual. Mine is almost torn to shreds from referencing it so much. ;) (paper one)

Heres the link to Canons 7d Tutorials..

Hey fellow Arizona residents!

Does anyone know of any good corn field mazes held in AZ? I'm in Yavapai county but I'm willing to drive a few hours if I have to. Photos or URLs would be fantastic if you have any!

Thanks everyone,
- Ken

I did one in the mid west a few years ago and I want to go again with some friends who have yet to enjoy the experience!

Can't say they don't exsist anywhere in AZ but I've never seen one from the air in the Central, Tucson, Yuma, Quartzsite or Page areas.

I've not flown down to Douglas or up towards Kingman/Vegas so maybe they exsist out there.

There is a farm on Greenfield Rd and Germann Rd, in Gilbert, that has a huge corn field and they have yet to cut it down (over 7 ft tall right now). I wonder if they are looking to do a maze in October.

hmmmmm..... Liability and what not..... guess I need to read the fine print..... not sure exactly what "errors and omissions" would encompass... duh....? hahaha...

From what I was told, it's insurance against "failure to perform" or "failure to deliver."

I just did a business policy for liability and gear coverage and E&O coverage was something else that came up so I'm just polling working shooters I know to see if they have it or have considered it.

Don't think it's relevant for me just yet. I don't think I'll have the entire future of Boeing or Airbus in the palm of my hand anytime soon.

yeah.. I think you can write your contract to cover that also... I would imagine people that shoot weddings really have to be cautious.

haha Ryan..... He wasn't really going anywhere at that point.. he was one BUSY boy.. running around the house at G-force speeds..... we kept trying to think of ways to capture his attention long enough to get him to sit for 2 seconds... I figured a new toy might work! :p:lol: He was a cute little guy and with some creative antics, we got some awesome natural looking shots of him. :)

E&O for photography... hummmm, That's of interest to me. That gives me something to think about. I suppose it could apply to a several circumstances, but I would need to think about that one. Kind of work related so that's why it's interesting.

Would you see ever a situation of where detrimental reliance could apply to photography?

Not unless you define it first...

I'm finding out that E&O coverage has more to do with CYA as regards the contract or contracts you may use and less to do with "failure to perform" or "failure to deliver." Both however, are situations where your contract should have you covered though so I guess there is a relationship.

-AP-
20th of July 2010 (Tue), 21:32
CYA as regards the contract or contracts

Indeed it does if you F up and leave something out, hence the "Omissions"
Now if the result was a customer taking action upon your contract, or "promise" Written or verbal. And that action resulted in a negative "whatever" (put whatever you wish there),
That would be the detrimental reliance.. This is very interesting. If you don't mind, what was the price? If not a total dollar amount, what % of the total cost of the policy?
