Looks like we need to have more photography meetups!

This weekend azboricua and I will be going to a bridge in Gila River (25 min away from chandler) to practice portrait/flash photography. Anyone else want to join?

Here are pictures of the location. (This is not my website, just pics of the bridge)

Wow! That looks like a really cool location. But like Brian said, I guess it's best to check with the proper authorities.
But if it does work out, I may be interested. Did you have someone lined up for the shots?

Many thanks :) No pano heads... shot hand-held :)

Very nice! I have yet to perfect taking pano shots. I always end up cutting something off.

That looks like a really cool place. However, I always get uneasy on the Res. If the local po-po finds you shooting on "government/res" property, you can kiss your equipment goodbye. I'd call and see if there are any restrictions or permit requirements for non tribe members.

Wow, I didn't even think about it. I'll give them a call today and report back.

Try turning your camera to portrait orientation. Even with a "normal" lens, this will give you more at the top and bottom of each frame for cropping purposes.

You'll need to shoot more frames however to cover the entire scene than you would if shooting in landscape orientation.

My version above was shot in Portrait and took 17 frames to cover about the same sweep as Franks version.

Truly quick and dirty three-exposure blend in CS5 but it's way over cooked and not masked carefully enough. Needs to be revisited when I have more time/patience...

Really? ? Not on my monitor.. Looks pretty good. A bit odd around the top sign, but if you had not stated "overcook" I probably would not have been looking so closely.

Anyway, I like it Jay..

Thank You... I see where I need to do some CA correction in LR and apply it to all three frames before exporting them as layers to CS5. This will make a good practice project.

Thank You Mr. Hatcher...

A young racer that I photographed when he came to town died today as a result of injuries sustained in a crash at Indy. :( I talked with him and his father on several occasions and they used some of my photos to promote Peter's racing. Seemed like a wonderful family, living the dream. My heart and prayers go out to his family.

Godspeed Peter.

I put both in quotes simply to point out that not all young folks are child-like and not all grown ups are mature.

Congrats on the 40D Mr. Nibble, and Jay! :) Are you loving the MK IV?

Cool shots from Crown King..guys, looks like a fun day out.. I spent my weekend trying to head up to Wood's Lake, ended up with a flat tire, no cell phone, and then was stopped for about 45-minutes or more on a 2 lane road due to an accident.... unfortunate person was air-lifted out of there...

Finally arrived at camp to find several onery children who just wanted to make funny faces... Some of these exposures could use a boost... but since they are snapshots, I'm not really spending a lot of time with them... turn and burn..?

I actually looked into it. Called the police office and they told me it was not allowed without a permit, gave me another number to call at the govt office. I called and the secretary told me it was a semi-lengthy process, and had me leave a message for some public relations lady who never called me back.

Seems like this is something that would be worth doing IF we had a few models lined up and enough people....but just to go mess around with a few friends, probably not worth it.

Well, I have very mixed feelings about this. In any other circumstance I would be elated, but I am honestly not sure what I feel. Happy and sad. An assistant editor for The Globe and Mail contacted me yesterday to see if he could use some of my photos in a story about the young racer who died at Indy Sunday.

Two of my photos of Peter were published on the front page of one of Canada's largest newspapers today and in the online edition.

I guess it would depend on how I see my function at the event.

If I'm truly "Media" or "Press", then I have an obligation to observe and report both good and bad. The job doesn't really come with a choice.

If I'm an "Event" photographer, then the waters get muddier because I'd feel like I'm there more to promote the good, upside of an activity and would be more inclined to do whatever my client wanted.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this more of a -- Dean wasn't there shooting when Peter had the accident, but had photographed him a few times here in Arizona and spoken with both of Peter's parents and Peter himself, so Dean has a bit of a personal connection with Peter and his family . . . That's the sadness part.

On the other hand Dean got some images published in an international newspaper, and I'm assuming got paid the standard rate for it . . . That's the elated part.

Kinda like, "yea I got some images published, but the images are of someone that was sort of my friend, and died in an accident" so from that aspect, not so yea.

I think it's more along those lines, but that is just my guess . . .

It is a lens correction preset. My 35L @ F/1.4 is known to vignette... so... if I click on the Canon profile for the 35L... the preset takes away the vignette and I can adjust for distortion.

They (Adobe) have loaded LR3.2 with a ton of lens profiles or presets.

Hope this helps.

Looks like we need to have more photography meetups!

This weekend azboricua and I will be going to a bridge in Gila River (25 min away from chandler) to practice portrait/flash photography. Anyone else want to join?

I scouted this same location for a potential bridal gown shoot some evening with a few of my MM contacts. I would LOVE to throw some sparks here... I actually called the tribal office for permitting, and they were like "huh?" funny that we are all concerned about the police grabbing our gear when they seem so ambivalent toward the taggers! but I agree that I have some of the same 'reservations' (HA!)

I'd be willing to risk a quick shoot... and if we could get a model that is a tribal member...

here is an interesting article (http://www.azcentral.com/community/chandler/articles/2010/08/19/20100819chandler-gila-film-scare0820.htm) the Cops were OK with the shoot but a "local" was not

Hey Everyone,

About the Meet UP group: Due to a personal family issue, I will not be able to do much with the group or photography for that matter, for the next few months. I just gave Roland the option to become the organizer, but remember what I was saying all along (this is everyone's group, no one is in charge). If any of you feel like helping in any way and would like to get involved behind the scenes, let Roland know and you can become a co-organizer. I will stay as a member for now, and hope to get involved more in a few months.

Please let me know if you have a any questions, will do my best to answer them.

It's a great setup.... the DO is my favorite modifier and the Ranger is a solid unit. I've shot with mine all day long without having to recharge the battery. A big congrats!

Very nice capture Jay! I like the B&W conversion.

She looked really uncomfortable in the video. LOL

Not a bad video... but maybe you want to have a big head/little feet shots? LOL

I sold off my zooms.... but... it wasn't the reasons he stated. I just found I come up with better compositions by using my feet. In most cases... primes are sharper than zooms. The new Canon 70-200L MK2 and future lenses my put an end to the sharpness debate.

He did mention the amount of light is more between the F/2.8 lens and the F/1.4 but he failed to mention the DOF is significantly reduced when shooting from F/2.8 to F/1.4. Which is pretty important IMO.

I think zooms have their place... it's all up to the shooting style of the photographer IMO.

Thanks for the link.

It might be easier for the camera to lock focus with more light at F/1.4 vs F/2.8 but it is more difficult to capture the shot as the DOF is much thinner and any slight movement from the model or the photographer will throw the image off. Not to mention you may have 1 eye in focus and the other out since the head might not be a 90 to the camera. There were a lot of variables he left out... not a bad video... but... he could have provided more info is all I am saying.

Think big, Think what is my promo going to be for Holidays / Senior shots / Etc.

I would try to design 3 or 4 promotions covering the 3 or 4 month periods where you would run them. the time periods corrolate to the holidays and events that happen during that time of year. or maybe just come up with the first one and see how it works out.

So I went to the zoo a couple weeks ago and posted some photos on my FB. One of my FB friends, a gal who is a coworker of mine sent this in the mail. I received it today and thought it was such a nice gesture. It really did make a nice card. I would have never thought.

I always get that messed up. Phoenix, Mesa, in Gilbert?

I was watching a good "town" video on the airport the other day. They were explaining the differences between municipal and regional (authority). It sounds like there's lots of plans to expand the airport as well..

Great shots..

I looked but my lighting setup came in higher priority. I wanted the new iPod touch until I saw the price. The new dual camera is nice but I would never use it.

No doubt I would get the lights too. I just wish they would allow a card slot you could do the 8 GB model it retails for $229 but after a bit will be onsale online for $200 I bet. yeah I guess it's just another gadget. I still have a Creative Zen 2GB model that has an SD slot and does me fine. If you can Skype on the new touch then it might be cool to have.

Oh yeah now you have me checking B & H used Flash Department every half hour...

There were a lot of variables he left out... not a bad video... but... he could have provided more info is all I am saying.
well you don't necessarily have to shoot wide open to get the focus. the camera itself will stop down when you take the shot. like the way he has the nikons. in order to use those lenses on a digital body it has to have the aperture ring (like the 50mm he had) and it has to be wide open. so really it's focusing at 1.4 but he may be shooting at like 5.6 or 8. wasn't saying he was shooting at that aperture. he just has that openess for it to focus with. I think the newer cameras will close down the shutter once the shutter button is pressed. hope that makes sense...

They had a used BXRi 500 for $489 last night, not sure if someone bought it. Here's the thing John...a lot of their Elinchrom stuff is priced differently when you add it into cart than the price it shows on their website. Try adding a BXRi into cart and see how much the "actual" price is!
