Why not bounce the flash off something?

You say OCF (Off Camera Flash) but it appears to be OCF (On Camera Flash), or maybe you said On-Camera when you wanted Off-Camera . . .

Either way, off camera is always better and you still can bounce.

I could post some food if you really want . . .

How about this instead:

@ doug, thanks for the tips! hm... maybe i should have brought my flash bracket... i've used it once since i got it.
haha, nice sports shot!

Joyce, I think you did well with the shots, but I'm not a tough critic. It was journalistic in nature, and you did the best with what you had available. :) I think shooting high ISO on the stage stuff was an excellent call on your part.. even if there are some oof shots due to movement.. you captured the feeling of the scene very well...

Flash.. I agree about bouncing it, I do it all the time.. but I'm so not proficient with my flash, and it's always mounted on camera as I have no bracket or off shoe cord... I am a bouncing fool though..... haha..

@ kristy, thanks for the comments! yah i'll have to practice some more with bouncing. your baby shots are adorable as usual!

Get all the slots on the ring aligned as best you can to the seams, insert the rods, open the octa, without locking the pins, and adjust where you see the rods dont meet the grooves by moving the cloth material of the octa near the ring. Mine was kind of tricky for like 10 minutes, only used it once and I can now open and close it without having to set it on a surface or anything.

If you are having issues with the inserting the rods part, insert your first rod, then the second in the opposite position or 180 degrees.

I'm getting the Droid-X in October. Do you have any good photography apps for it? I saw someone made a nice contract app for the Iphone and I was hoping there may be one for Droid.

I would have an app that would autofill in the date, the clients name and some of the other details and they would read the softcopy on my phone when doing a consultation with them. If they agree and want to book the session they can sign with their finger on the spot and when i save the contract it automatically emails me and cc's the client a copy via email. IT's pretty slick, no papers and easy to manage. Anything like that ring a bell for Droid?

Aside from that, please list any other cool must have apps that may be photography related or just in general so i know what to get when i get my phone.

Oh and very nice startup animation, very cool. Did you have to root your phone to do that?

Honestly... the apps for Android are behind compared to iPhone... but it is getting better. As far as I know... there really aren't that many apps that are good for mobile. I've been wanting to try and figure out how to create apps so that I could make some... but I haven't really been able to do that yet.

Here are a couple apps just doing a quick search in the Market.

Photography Assistant (Free, Beta)
Photography Calculator (2.99)

And yes, I'm rooted. Absolutely loving it too. :)

It's going to be interesting... Sigma keeps nipping at the heals of the big dogs. With the new 85mm due out before 2022 LOL and the release of this beast.... Sigma is doing well. They had the issues with the 50mm but... they did change the coating to the exterior of the lenses... so they look more like Canon/Nikon.

I'd like to test out the new camera.... could be fun.

Just remember that (I think) you divide a Foveon MP count by 3 to get the actual effective size so in this caes it's 16Mp which is right in the ballpark with everyone else.

I still have a gut feeling the 1DsMkIV will be the one that sets everyone on their ear when (if) it gets released.

Would Is really be useful for macro shots? If you gain say 1 stop... it will help with the shutter speed... and this would make the difference between a blurry shot and a sharp image. I haven't read anything on the new Canon 100mm macro with IS making a huge difference. I think you only gain a stop...maybe a little less when the lens is at 1:1. Could be wrong. IS/OS or not ... the Sigma 150mm macro is a great lens.

AZAlphaDog

I think the difference is it doesn't have Mode 1 or Mode 2 just on or off.

No more all direction stabilization and vert. or horiz. only modes.

If I understand it correctly that is the difference.

Canon claims 4 stops.... but... I swear I read on FM in the macro forum @ 1:1 people only gained 1 if that.... not 100% sure.

another

Now reads as a 2 stop gain at 1:1 ?

For me... when I had the 100mm macro classic... no issues.... no need for IS.... but... that's me. I don't think it would help with the Sigma 180mm macro I have... I shoot it hand-held and with a monopod.... but... I have to have the shutter speeds up or it shows shake with the longer focal length.

How is it that I just discovered this thread? I'm reading it here at work.

Anyway, is this just random AZ folk chatter, or do you folks actually shoot together?

Welcome, I would say a little of both. I have went and shot with some members as others have too. :)

Aha! Thanks for the welcome :) I've been on POTN for a few years, but only started coming here regularly relatively recently. I'm in NW Phoenix. I shoot most anything except humans (except when forced into it by some relative).

Azboricura, I note that you're one of the few other people I've run into with a Sigma 50-150. I have the original (not the version II) and love it for indoor sports. I know that lots of folks had trouble with that lens, but mine works great.

hmmmm

On the 100mm f2.8 L IS macro lens I really like the IS (but I'm used to having IS as I shoot mainly with the 24-105 f4 IS). Does IS make any difference? I find I reach for my IS lenses more often than anything else, for work events the boss doesn't like flash during his presentations so High ISO, slow shutter speeds, and make sure that IS is on.
I have gone to very slow shutter speeds 1/50 and slower hand-held, the keeper rate isn't great but I manage to get enough keepers.

Same here man, my copy is vey sharp, and focuses very fast and accurately, when it doesn't it's user error.

I haven't been following this thread but I have the classic 100 (non-IS) and love the lens - both for macro and as a short tele. In fact I don't have IS on ANY of my glass, so I guess I don't miss it.

Advice taken, Key wording now. I watched a few tutorials and they mentioned the same thing, I hear it 3 times now so it must be true.

Anyone have a good template of a letter for model release and use of pictures? I am new to this and figured I should ask the veterans (at photography) here.

This one is designed to be used by adults only and does not have a spot for parent or guardian signature (if that matters.)

cool cycle shots... too bad about the BORING sky! In Lightroom go to the Luminance adjustment under HSL menu (Hue / Sat / Lum). Crank the sliders and watch the colors change. I typically 'fix' the skies a bit deeper blue with that.

Hey do any of you shoot with a vest? I'm wanting a nice casual photography vest I could use at weddings. I'm tired of carrying my backpack full of lenses. It would be easier to simply grab a diff lens out of a pocket instead of taking the backpack off and changing it around. Any suggestions or recommendations? Does anyone own the POTN Safari vest or the other vest they have, forget the name. They are both under $50.00. I can't have a bright orange vest, something casual to blend in, maybe black in color would be nice.

No, I do not own this lens align tool, but I do know that some lens align tools can cost a bit more and thought this would be a nice budget-minded option for some of us to check out.

Thinktank has some fantastic products that can be very useful to wedding photographers.

You should look at their site and see all the stuff you can ask for your birthday.

My 11 month old computer decided to start shutting down occasionally... for no reason that I can think of. I decided it was getting too hot, and it was a protective shut off to preserve the drives..? only thing I can think of. But not sure why it's getting hot in there..... today it wouldn't start up at all when my hubby came out this morning to use it. :(

I messed with it when I got up.. and started it in safe mode, so that I could try and trouble shoot a problem... turned it self off in less than 5 or 10 minutes... so I decided to leave well enough alone so I wouldn't kill my drive.. dropped it off at the repair guy this afternoon.. still under mfg warranty, so the diagnostic won't cost me anything. Will be interested to see what they find out.

Decided to pick up a laptop, figured a back up computer is in order, plus as the family gets older.. we are all jocking for computer time... lol....

Anyway, I decided to pickup a router as well, to provide internet to both systems and run wireless printer....

SOOOO.. the big question.. as I am preparing to install the router... what additional security, if any, do I need to protect the network? Please know that I know NOTHING in this department, so pretend like I'm your grandma... lol... i have norton on my systems... and I run DSL through a quest modem. I think I haved to run the modem to the router, and it will be wired to the desk that way.

So does the modem firewall protect the router...? Or ..? what do I need to do? i'm afraid to hook it up befor having security in place. :)

thanks to anyone who can help. I O U brownies..??

As far as I know (which isn't much) the only security that you can put on your router, is to just password protect your wireless connection. Make it difficult (numbers, letters, and symbols (if it will allow you too)) so that it's harder for someone to crack. Like the one here at my place, it has CAPITAL LETTERS, lowercase letters, numbers, and this -.(Not the period lol) That just adds more options for them to go through.

As far as virus protection, I believe that's all on you computer. So Norton should do a good enough job on that department. So you should be good. :)

Do I get brownies, too? :D lol

Kristy, what router did you get? Name brand, Model? That way I can try to get you detailed instructions for safe install. Without that info, What you should do is plug in the router to power only, not to the modem, connect you laptop to the router, run the setup, put a password on the router, WPA2 Personal is usually the best type of security, once you have finished the setup you should:

1) Disconnect power to both router and modem.
2) Connect network cable between router and modem.
3) Power up the modem first and let all the lights light up as usual.
4) power up the router once the modem is done.

From there all you need to do is search for your Network name and plug in your password to connect. I would suggest IF YOU COULD, that you set your network to not broadcast its name or invisible, that way someone looking for a network will not know you have one unless they know the name and search for it specifically.

Also, Just FYI and MHO Norton is no good, I have had computers at work and home get viruses like crazy with Norton. It seems they are no longer the name and quality they once were yet they still charge like they are. I run Avast on all windows computers I come in contact with. Avast is free, but dont let that fool you, not all free things are bad, I have had zero encounters with viruses in my home and work once I started running Avast. Avast requires little to no interaction from you after installation, it auto updates and lets you go about your own business worry free. I dont work for Avast, lol, just someone who has had great success with it and have had to fix numerous computers that get infected running McAfee and Norton thinking they are fully protected.

I hope this helped, PM me if you have any other questions.

I hope this helped, PM me if you have any other questions.

Thank you for this.. :) I'm going to work on it later today.. I have so much to do now that I spent most of yesterday trouble shooting and running around... blah....

I bought the D-Link N300... is that a good one? I have no idea, but the guy at the store said it was better than some of the others out on the market.. since I had no comuter to resarch it... i just went with his recommendation.

Thanks for the tips on the virus info too. I'll have to check that out when I get caught up on everything else...

Ihope my PC is okay.... sucks.. I had a handful of stuff that wasn't backed up yet since I was working on it... blah.

Well I am glad I have a tripod and remote to play with the new gear. I was trying for a high key look then added a color gel in PS. I need models... lol

My screen isn't calibrated now, so everything looks flipping weird.... blah...

Only thing I can cc on is the light... you need to angle it so you get that triangle on your cheek.... put a little light in the shaded eye... I'm guessing you must need to bring the main around to camera right a little more, and then down a teensy bit.. that outta do it.. look for the shadow of the nose on the cheek, to form the triangle and light in your left eye...

Off and running again!

It does look pretty much like a black and white with a blue circular gel spot. I had ambient from a window and a high light on the same wall as the window. the background is the midi octa. Kinda hard to get it right when i cant see my pose through the view finder. I am going to try to set my camera up through my laptop and see if i can see what i am doing that way.

or football:

Well I am glad I have a tripod and remote to play with the new gear. I was trying for a high key look then added a color gel in PS. I need models... lol

Nice shot Doug!

Sorry to hear about the PC troubles... no clue about using a router... can't help there.

Interesting shot John. You can use Lightroom 3 and the laptop to shoot tethered...if you have LR3

Kristy,

Should be interesting to hear what is causing the shutdowns..
My thoughts are:
- Power supply
or
- Virus

if the power supply, you should be fine with the drive / data - if a virus hard to say until it is removed and how much data remains.

Good luck - as to the router solid instruction have already been given. :0

Buy.com changed their prices so many times in the last 12 hours its not even funny. That grey version went from:

$89->$50->$89->$43.99 and probably back to $89 in the next few hours.
