Michael: sorry to hear of your loss.

Hey Everyone, as you all now I haven't been around for a while. I was taking care of my mother. On September 29 she lost her battle with cancer.
As I am dealing with her loss, I will try to slowly get back to normal and pick up my camera again soon.
Michael, my thoughts are with you. I understand, as I lost my mother to cancer as well. I always felt comforted in knowing that I was able to care for her during her difficult days...
I hope that also helps you, just knowing that you gave her your best. It is never easy, but time does heal..
I hope you don't mind the religous sentiment.. It is never good
to assume, but I love the verse..

Ok, I need some C&C. My second shooting opportunity. These are my mom's fiance's parents. They wanted waist up only, individuals and one or more together. These are my keepers, cropped and resized for web otherwise SOOC. They are going on vacation this weekend to visit family out of state and want to have one of the "together" ones printed to leave with the family there. They are so good to me I could not turn down the chance at giving something back. I think 4 is my favorite of the 2 together. Background will be edited in PS. I had nothing to work with in such short notice (yesterday) but a bed sheet and my lights to blow it out.

I think they look pretty good. It looks like you have good seperation from your subjects to background so putting something in PS should be easy. I personally would leave more room around them and not crop so tightly. If you want to put the image in a frame with a mat you need a little extra room there. Couldn't get him to show his pearly whites? :)

I was lucky to get the smirk, he is a non smiling joker. Very very funny guy. I think I might of made the crops too tight but then again with the new background from PS I will give it more room. I cropped them this tight because I only had about 6 feet wide of background to work with. They were about 3 feet away from it.

Nope, only the actual pogoplug itself. It acts as a server, no PC required for it to work. Just an external hard drive connected to the pogoplug. But the pogoplug is for external drives, if you want to access your internals drives thats another story.

I have to give it to this device. The setup is literally a check list for your cable connections, hitting "Next" a few times confirming each connection, enter a username and passwork for your account security and BAM. You're set. I think all routers/modems should be this way, have a beginners setup and an experienced setup.
The Bestbuy cheatsquad would go out of business. Even though I personally think they are of no use and should not exist. They charge people $30 to upgrade firmware on a PS3, I mean come on, you push two buttons, walk away, and its done. They charge something like $100 to remove the bloatware from computers, let me stop right here. If anything makes me ridiculously angry, its Bestbuy.

Dropbox is also very good. Specially when you need to share something with someone on the fly. Only drawback is you need to upload everything and me having terabytes full of stuff that just isnt an option.

Yeah they do rip people off for stuff that is pretty easy if your a techie. I never would charge what the stores charge When I would do repairs or installs I would always be 50 - 66% of what the big box stores charge and alot of times didnt charge for some things.

Czech Aero L-39.
This one was getting a new paint job out at Wickenburg airport. I spotted it last week and went back and forth with the paint shop, trying to nail them down to a good time to shoot it. As it turns out, I got some morning shots that were not in the best location, but the owner and his test pilot/trainer were there later today to fly the jet off to Deer Valley for some minor tweaks before this goes home to what I understand is Reno.
The aircraft belongs to Bret Cox, a very nice guy and apparently a master at start-up companies. He's made his millions. The test pilot/trainer is John Penney, a rather decent pilot. Look him up.
Here's a teaser. I have lots to sort through.

I don't know if the background works with his shirt. Maybe a brown? Maybe try toning down the highlights on the right side of her hair. Just another thought if it gets a frame and mat it is going to cut off more of thier bodies on the lower potion of the picture. If you can move this up that would be good. Looks awesome though. :)

Good capture!
I had just stepped into a pizza parlor for lunch buffet when we had the upside-down and sideways hailstorm with 20' visibility. In October. In Phoenix.
On the way in, there was a flash flood alert. When I finished up and drove home, there were 15' trees felled by the wind and strewn across the roads.

that pogoplug looks really cool. would be a lot more helpful than just plugging in and taking out each of my 3 externals to find out which one has the photo I need/want. thank you powerbook for only 2 usb ports...
Nice job with the digital backgrounds. wish I could do that stuff...would clean up a heck of a lot of photos for me. Every time I try to do something like that I just get too frustrated and stop, mostly because it's too much work and gets me all jittery that I can't sit still for that long. like when I edit tons of photos :-/ or maybe I'm just doing the digital bg all wrong. most likely since I don't know what I'm doing. I think all I need is a new laptop battery and I won't have to worry about only using my computer at my desk where it has to stay plugged in or else I'll lose all information in less than 5 minutes of it being unplugged.
I think it's time for bed, I need to stop rambling...goodnight!

Regarding the digital BG ... to me it looks too "fake" almost. I will say it is clean and nicely done, just seems like 2 images put together (which it is) but IMHO too easily noticed.

One thing I found out about doing backgrounds... make sure the lighting matches. lol Or is somewhat close.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g18/jbdavies/6e285b36.jpg
This shot... took me 4 hours to edit, just the background. I'm not saying it looks good... but it's acceptable to me, and my family. Haha. So that's all that matters.
But I stole the background from somewhere online, and replaced what was there... you could see the street, street signs, and even a car. I zoomed in very very close and edited all the edges using a tablet. It was a pain... but overall, it turned out decent.

Um, yea get it right in-camera or at least as close as possible. As in shoot with the background you want to use. Why make things harder than they need to be?

Each image has its own usage rights but this is a great resource for use in website design or photographic art. Yes I agree with places like this I don't see how a stock photographer can compete. There was a thread I was reading on how the internet & technology in general has affected photography. The gist is adapt to the market or you may not have one.
Going back to what Frank was saying a few weeks back about not comprimising your price is very true. If you have the talent people will come. If you compromise on your value as a photographer then what is your worth. :)

And then I did my weekly football pictures for my work buddy. It was a little emotional because my buddy's wife past away last year from breast cancer, and the whole team
placed pink stickers under their eyes with her name written on them. It was almost surreal. Her name was Amy, and she was soo full life and energy. She passed while only in her 30's..

Lots of photo ops... It really was a lot of fun. Particularly if you have a young family. It was pretty entertaining. They had a funny banjo player and accordion/harmonica player performing on the way there. And then a simulated train robbery on the way back.
I don't think they had an open car, but they did have an observation deck. The only thing I would have done differently was plan to stay longer. We drove up the first day just in time for dinner and then took the train the following day with a ride home afterwards.
Next time I would plan maybe 3 or 4 days. 1 day in Williams, and 2 at the Canyon, maybe 3 there.

Hey guys, I have some ideas i want to bounce off of you folk.
I'm thinking of another camera body to help me out some. I currently have a 1dmk2 and was thinking of either getting 1dmk2n or 5d classic. I found both for a similar pricing. there's a lot I can benefit from getting either. I plan on using it for help with portraits, sports, weddings etc etc. I'm used to using 1D bodies and would be nice that I can share batteries but I think i can get a bunch of batteries for the 5d for around the same pricing. I might even just switch to this newer body and get rid of my mk2.
I have thought of going even newer but idk if I can spend that much more money yet. I could wait and save up more money and go with another body such as the mk3. I'm not that interested in getting the newest. just out of my price range. and i do want to stay within the 1.3 FF cropping.
thoughts? ideas? shoot me now cause I'm an idiot for considering such a change?

Back from vacation! Spent a relaxing week in the Colorado mountains and am dreading going back to the daily grind tomorrow.
Got to try out the new-2-me 80-200 2.8 while I was at the cabin. Damn, DoF is shallow at 200mm, wide open! I am not sure AF doesn't need some fine tuning, but when it is on, it looks pretty good. Let me know what you think of the image below.
This JPEG is straight-out-of-the-camera. I can probably improve it a bit from the RAW file. This Mountain Chickadee was kind enough to let me get a few nice close shots.

Another option would be to pay a MM model about $75/hour to pose for you. This might be beneficial especially if you don't know how to pose models or just want to build your portfolio.

Here are the three images. Tips on what to do next time or ideas. I couldnt think of many poses that the magazines would prefer, so i just went with what i felt was best.

Last minute notice, but in 2 hours (5pm) a few of us will be getting together in a park and practicing lighting. Both my roommate and I have been meeting up with photographers recently and learning about lighting...today we plan to really nail it in. Shoot me a PM if you wanna come.
We'll be near Lindsay and Queen Creek Rd in Gilbert.
Show us the pics.... :) Did you have a fun outing.
Kenny, very nice shot of the canyon. We took the Grand Canyon Railway back in July and I have to agree it was alot of fun.
And the marshall came thru looking for criminal types... he found my son of course!...
Looks like a fun train ride... nice pics from all of you who have a similar collecton of the "robber".. lol...
Not sure, but if you like the 1.3 crop, I'd not switch to the 5D classic since it's full frame...
A Grand Canyon shot I processed as a fake tilt-shift on a whim - South Kaibab Trail, Cedar Ridge and O'Neil Butte
Beautiful images!! :)
I was wondering, where do you find models or model out here? I tried modelmayhem but i found out that you have to already have taking shots of two models which is abit difficult to do when you dont know anyone who is a model or a photographer that does photos of models. Can anyone help me out on finding models?
Ask random people that you think are either pretty or confident...the girls will be flattered by someone wanting to use them as a model.... (i would offer to have them bring a friend along). Or go to a meet up practice thingy where people are getting together for practice... you can learn from others' experience and get some shooting and helpful hints as well. :)
I found this guy in my hood showing his POTN Pride!

You need to improve the light IMO. I'm not being harsh, so please don't take it that way. What are you using to light the subject? He needs to pop off the background...so you need to light it in order to create separation... also..maybe lower your ISO.
The color temperature on these is pretty warm, and there is a strong yellow cast on my monitor. Are you shooting a white balance card for reference?
Also, keep en eye on the backgrounds to make sure they aren't competing for attention. The lines in the mages really make a difference as to where they eye lands.... ideally, you want first to have the eye hit your subject, and then gently wander around the image to see the other elements. If that makes any sense at all...

Join meetup.com, find some hobbies you enjoy and go make some friends dude.
Another option would be to pay a MM model about $75/hour to pose for you. This might be beneficial especially if you don't know how to pose models or just want to build your portfolio.
I cant pay them because i dont have models to join MM which is why im looking for a model so i can join MM hahaha

Thanks for the tips. Ill keep that in mind next time i shoot. Was in a little bit of a rush since he had a few weddings to cook for but next time ill have to think about that. Again thanks for the tip

I was using natural light since i didnt have time to setup, was abit rushed, as for a white balance card, i have the XTi which you just need white in a picture to set it but i didnt have a white one on it at the time so i just used normal stuff. The color of the resort is very warm and makes me not like to do shoots there as i did the shoots for their website. It seems really hard to work with and i dont have gels to use when doing shoots here
I think i understand what you mean about the background but, for the lines i kinda didnt get it but maybe because im new and still have so much to learn, i get what you mean about the eyes though. Thank you for your tips and all. It really does make a differance.

Had a great time, I'm going to make it a regular thing.
I really didn't edit any of the pictures except for one, as we were just practicing lighting (and still need to clean up the green). I loved the expression...it was a "OMG I can't believe you said that" expression.

Throwing some backlighting on your subject will help with better separation from the green...
Helps kill the reflected color.

I realized I hate green or any sort of backgrounds. Gonna stick to "real" backgrounds (outdoors/beds/couches) from now on...this extracting people and adding fake backgrounds stuff isn't for me.
I created a logo this morning, what do you guys think?

On the subject then not on the background? I think we were just throwing light everywhere like Unicorn's and Glitter! lol

Yes, on the subject...
When we'd use Green Screen for TV, we'd put the standard Key, Fill and Backlight on the subject, large "broads" on the chroma-key screen to get that lighting as even and difuse as possible and then usually add a couple "kicker" lights behind on each side to put a bit of rimlight on the subject to help "cut them out" from the background and to cut down the green splatter.

I've been around POTN for almost four years now. I used to post a lot more than I do now.
The average is very front-weighted... ;)
I also get quite a bit of traffic on my Transportation Posts (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=11078010#post11078010) and I like to try and respond to each person who's kind enough to comment. Toss in a couple of other simple, BS chat threads and the total begins to climb.
Oh, and this thread (quickly headed toward Version 4) is one of the longest running Regional threads on POTN...
