@Kristy, what I meant was that I would not want to go to 1.6 again. I'd rather have 1.3 or FF. I like my wide angle lens :-)

Even with the splashes of green.. I love the shots, look so naturally fun with the smiles. I think good time was had by all! :) Thanks for sharing!

Thanks yeah all of us should get together as soon as it cools off a little bit more. Back in the 90's this week.

I can't afford it either. Best buy 36 mo 0% financing got me the 5D and my mom gave me 1K towards my 7D. which I got through canon loyalty program as a refurb.

I started with the first digital Rebel then the 20D and then the 40D to what I have now. There may be a lot of Mk ii's on the market if the 3 comes out.

One of the biggest reasons what the crop factor. and the fact that Zenfox showed me his 5D2 and the different the crop factor makes. I want my 50mm to be a 50mm, not an 80mm. I really want a 70-200mm f4l but that being a 112-320mm to me was very fustrating, specially in limited space. I saw myself having to settle for different lenses than what I wanted because of the total focal length due to the crop factor. I think a FF 7D would be the best camera in the market out right now. For some FF means a lot, for some it doesnt.

Wow you sold it quick!

The Tokina 11-16mm lasted the longest. I have one guy saying he will pay after work but probably wont be until 8pm AZ time, some local interest also, so I know it will sell by end of day today one way or another. Then I am off to some online shopping.

yep good response. I'll be moving to FF shortly. I've made a good chunk of change this month on weddings and I could have easily bought the 5D2 or 1D if I wanted, unfortunately my wife and I agreed all this money would go towards our Disneyworld Trip in December and to pay for some bills. I plan on having a 5Dx by March of next year. I have 3 weddings lined up (2 in January and 1 in Feb) which will cover the cost of a new camera and lens. It'll work out great having my 40D, 7D and 5Dx as we plan on making a photobooth and my 40D will be a perfect camera for that :)

Lets all get together sometime soon and do a shoot. I know Zenfox wanted to set something up and I would like to meet you guys and check out your new 5D's. I've never used a full frame yet so i'm still in the dark the actual differences they make.

The flash is so bright it lights up the whole room. The light was facing backwards and still did it (This is the picture from it) and when we were just testing it we figured out it was TTL so im going to get the 430ex ll i believe it is.

This was just a random shot that i thought was cool

Does anyone have a ten stop ND filter and a UWA lens I could rent off of them. I need to see if it will be worth it for rig shots in the middle of the day. PM me your price. I have rented lenses from Tempe Camera before, but they don't have filters for rent.

As I was shooting at the Grand Canyon last week I noted a HUGE difference in the color vibrance between the Canon 35mm f/1.4L and the 50mm f/1.2L ( both on the 5DM2). I knew to expect differences when comparing zooms vs primes, but the difference between these two primes is dramatic. I'm shooting sunset tonight so I'll post some comparison shots.

which brings up a good point about taking notes on your setups, especially flash settings when working off-camera and in Manual (which I mostly do). EXIF is great history for the camera settings but doesn't capture the off camera flash settings, so you gotta take notes.

Attached is a double sided Shoot Template I made up to track stuff like that (if attaching worked)

Anyone here have a 100mm 2.8 macro? non-L version.

Used to... Sold it because I found macro wasn't really bag.

Sick sharp lens.

85 f/1.8 has a rather longish MFD. Not a good "close up" lens. 17-40 however focuses quite close.

icassell
13th of October 2010 (Wed), 16:44
Oh ...

I've never owned or used the 85, so I'm not sure I can be helpful in the comparison. It is razor sharp, but focus (even with the focus limiter switch) is not outrageously fast (I'd say it's average). I rarely use AF for macro work. The lens is a bit contrasty for portraits but it is certainly not horrible and you might need to soften things a bit in PP, but it shines for macro. I will say, since I like shooting bugs, I wish I'd saved for the 180mm so I didn't have to get as close. The problem is that the 180 is super expensive and I've learned to sneak up on the darn' bugs. I have no regrets about purchasing this lens. I would not bother with the 100mm L IS version ... the non-L is built very well.

If you're considering the Canon 100, I've also heard great things about the Sigma 105 and the Tamron 90.

we use ours for detail shots for weddings... Focusing speed is S L O W in normal light and excrutiating in low light... it likes to walk back and forth, several times before locking in, better to get it close manually before pressing the button... grind grind grind

Not that I know of, but I've never really looked. You may just want to learn to do it by hand. The other alternative is Portrait professional, which u have to pay for but it is cheaper than Portraiture.

I have them both next time we get together you can check them out. I like the 100 Macro but it is slow focusing. Both lenses are razor sharp but get the macro if you want to do the close up stuff. of couse some PS cameras do some good macro too.

Hey guys, if anyone is interested in a free white box for product/macro/food photography let me know. I welded a frame out of small angle iron and spray painted it white, then made walls out of white foam board. It works great, and the frame could be reused even if the foam starts to fall apart. I don't have room for a white box I don't use so if anyone wants to pick it up I would be glad to give it to them for free.

Hey Tagg, let see some of you pictures from the Phoenix Fashion Week shows?

Are you going to the Scottsdale Fashion Week events?

Have you finished post-processing with your photos? You're fast! I'd like to see yours, too!

I've only seen photos of PFW from two other photographers. One, the photographer must have been crouching and aiming upwards. The models all appear twice as wide at their feet compared to their apparent should width, and with shrunken heads.

I am so slowww. After messing around for days this week in Lr3, I've completely revamped my RAW import and correction technique. Went back and re-processed some of the better photos from within the past year, too.

Wow!

Minor change, if any, upon image quality, but huge improvement upon visual impact -- even in black-and-white. Good enough that I started to post some photographs up for print sale on my Web site.

I'm aiming for posting some photos up on FB (not at all sure that I may post them on my own Web site, since that would be commercial use). I hope to have a large bulk of them posted on FB by Sunday.

This is going to sound harsh, and it's not intended to be harsh or blunt but, I'm just used to processing my images at or right after sporting events. News and editorial event images have a short "lifespan" so I got into the habit of processing quickly.

Here are a few samples of my images:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4124/5066081652_d5a36344cc_b.jpg

Working with the two ladies on the pink carpet on Thurs. Nice women, I rented a flash bracket and E-TTL II cord which resulted in several cases of "flash didn't fire" which frustrated me and made me look stupid in front of these lovely ladies, so I took the thing back and just made due with my 580EX II on-camera for Fri. and Sat.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4085/5076917488_c439dfd51d_b.jpg

This model has a very "high-fashion" look.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4029/5076917456_2521f788dc_b.jpg

Surprised that some of these girls don't have nicer skin, but hey what are you going to do.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4145/5076322735_8740da9b78_b.jpg

Beautiful women in bikinis, man this is tough work.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4070/5076917556_b72aa1df5c_b.jpg

Yep, this is a tough job point my camera at all these beautiful people.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4005/5076322813_2304d49ec9_b.jpg

Trying real hard to remember that it's about the clothes and the clothing designer.

Here is a bonus image from last years SFW to see what it looks like looking back at the photographers at a runway show.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4033/5076953228_7608f51d5a_b.jpg

Agreed, I need to seriously speed up my workflow. Particularly with culling the keepers and then concentrating upon those for a quick turn-around.

Your photographs are the most polished look I've seen from PFW, so far. They are also fairly close to accurate colors. Allowing for photographic artistry and style, the colors are very good. Definitely much more editorial in style than mine. I need to work on that, too.

Do you carry around a portable backup hard drive? I only start processing photos after I have three sets of the RAWs.

You can purchase tickets to attend the runway show if that is what you are into or if you are a photographer you can have a credited media outlet request a media credential for you. About the same as most sporting events.

The process of getting credentials for events has been discussed over and over on other parts of this forum.

Not trying to be rude or "unique" but getting a credential for almost any size event is, for the most part, the same process.

You need a reason to be there other than "it seems like a fun thing to shoot"

Just like when you got onto the starting line for the NHRA Top Fuel drag race, if you know someone that can get you in or are friends with the "right" people you could get in that way.

Channels 3 and 12 should adopt me. After all, their crew and I are frequently at the same events, even off-beat, things. Only thing is, I'm learning their names in person since I turn on my TV about twice a year.

Even more amusing (to the crew) I stopped into a Vietnamese restaurant for lunch last week. Completely looked like a schlub. Scruffy face, scraggly hair, and mussed up run-about clothes. An Asian special interest news crew was there (TV and radio). The crew got ready to interview one of the owners, so I hid on the opposite side of the restaurant. The camera guy kept on swinging over to me as I repeatedly hid my schlubby self from the camera.

I'm sure that FlyingPhotog can relate.

Well, personally I think taking personal comments personally on the interwebs would personally be against ones personality and would personally be frond upon, but personally I wouldn't know about such personal things. Okay, starting to finish up post-processing. (I am still puzzling out which steps to remove from my workflow for churning through thousands of snaps within an hour. Insight about speeding up Lr3.2: it needs more than 2GB of RAM to process thousands of photos quickly; which means: I need a new motherboard and more RAM.) Posted some headshots, so far. Napping for a few winks, and then I'll finish up post-processing on runway photos and post them.

One technique I saw in a vid was to remove green from the image after the chromagreen background is removed. That way, there will less of a conspicuous green color cast against the digital background. Haven't tried it yet, myself.

If the B/G say cameras are ok, I'll try and catch alternative angles of the ceremony or watch for wedding party reactions to same.

In general, I just snipe candids of guests having fun. The 135 f/2 is great for this. Little moments that the paid shooter can't get because he/she is doing something else.

Glad I had gear with me for the reception though. Lot of my stuff is still kind of "snapshot-ish" but no doubt it's better than what most of the P&S crowd got. Or at the very least, I can process mine to look better! ;)

We took Forest Service Road 151 (Hart Prarie Road) which is a couple of miles past the turnoff for Snowbowl. Don't blink or you'll miss it. I would not recommend any low profile vehicles as the road gets pretty rough at times.

Well... at first... I thought this is just flat out dumb.. then... I was thinking it could be useful for events/weddings... places you would need a portable studio.. but... I wonder how a giant trash bag without AC would do in the middle of the Phoenix summer. :D

Good times!

Hatch - thanks for the welcome and compliment. I've been lurking for a while and hesitant to post any photos. I've only got a G11 right now. While it is a very good P&S, it can't keep pace with the big boy weapons. I hope to have a 5d MkII in my hands by Christmas - come on Santa Claus :D

Here are a couple more from my trip to Escudilla. I highly recommend this trip. It was an easy 4-hour drive from Mesa and well worth the effort. It has one of the highest concentration of aspens I've ever seen in AZ. They are on fire right now.

Welcome Salmo...

Thanks Chris & Jay:

This is located in eastern Arizona between Springerville/Eager and Alpine. It is called Escudilla Mountain. It is the third highest mountain in Arizona and has a road that goes up to nearly 10,000 ft. The scenery is second to none. My wife is from Alpine and I've spent some serious time on Escudilla over the years. You can easily drive the loop road in a car.

I truly enjoy and appreciate the excellent work of the AZ photographers on this forum. I used to shoot weddings/portraits for my dad many moons ago and getting back into the discipline this year. I can't wait to get my 5d MkII and some serious glass.

Take care;

Jeff

I got a new lens but got the wrong one. I got a Sigma 70-300mm when i meant to buy the Canon IS version. Oh well. Anyway i was curious, sitting outside and trying to take pictures of the stars with it. I had a tripod and used a remote for my shutterspeed, had it open for about 15-25 minutes and am wondering does that hurt the camera? I noticed that some of my recent shots, like one of my cat, has some red pixels. Im taking the camera to Tempe Camera soon to get my sensor cleaned, etc but am wondering if long shutter speed hurts the camera. The camera is a XTi and only has taken 4000 pictures.

FlyingPhotog

Long exposures cause the sensor to heat up and this in conjunction with the length of the exposure itself can make hot pixels more pronounced.

If you prowl around over in the Astronomy section, you'll find many references to "image stacking" which is combining multiple shorter shots instead of leaving the camera open for so long.

I have never heard of long exposures causing damage. But Reading the posts above....i stand corrected.

Understand that "heat up" doesn't mean like to the point of being able to make coffee...

It is enough to raise noise levels and make funky colored pixels appear though.

Ahh alright. Ill search for the tutorial on that. Thought it was differant

I agree, but i dont see anything if i just shoot at 30 seconds etc. I thought maybe 15 minutes would be able to get something but nah, didnt get anything.

Stacking software "builds" the image out of many exposures...

It's like "Lighter Color" layer blending in PS but on steroids.

Hatch isn't available on facebook, so I figured I'd post here. You're slipping man.

I'm shooting a model on Friday that asked if she could have some of the unedited pics I take of her as well as the ones I retouch. I really don't have an issue with it, but I know most photographers don't like to do this..why is that? I figured I'd ask in case I'm missing something.

It's your quality level and reputation on the line.

Do you want your work to go to some Photoshop hack and get shown to the world with your name on them?

Politely Decline...

Besides, you should have in writing exactly what the model is entitled to receive in consideration for doing the shoot. Prints? Files? Cash? Kitten?

Hey hey...

Full agree with Jay. If you want your work to be printed on a sub par home printer by someone who doesn't have a clue... this is the risk you take giving your files away.

Even a TFP shoot... have them pick "X" amount of shots to be retouched and used for their portfolios. Offer print services.... comp cards...etc. I know you are not in this to make $$$... but... I know you are proud of your work. So...

Contract...contract...contract...contract.... did I mention...contract. :)

I'd agree with everyone... 15-20 min is doable. And I think Lightroom should detect your hot pixels and automatically scrub them
