I can so relate we have been delivering more packages and catalogs since Nov 1.
My B&H catalog showed up last Friday. I tossed it in the recycle bin. Can..........Not..........Resist.......
Seriously, I look at that catalog and only want to burn more money I don't have.

Thanks - when we pulled up to the parking lot there I said 'we gotta have them jumping in the background' Worked out well.

So, anybody going to the Joe McNally seminar next month. I just got my flyer in the mail. $100 for an all day seminar doesn't seem to bad.

I did one with Joe 'numnuts' in California a couple years ago - spent the week shooting with him and the class - lotsa fun, but a WEEK was like trying to sip from a fire-hose, wonder what a day would be like.

Zenfox nice. She looks good and the lighting looks great i just tend to see on so many model shots of legs being... dim or i dont know... just seems to me the legs are not something the photographer pays attention to alot. I can understand on why but just i made myself a checklist kinda to what to look for and what to have when shooting depending on what it is (in my mind type of checklist)
Im not saying your picture is bad in any way i hope you dont take it in a bad way just saying i see in the glamour section how alot of photographers miss lighting on the legs or dont pay much attention to them.
Awesome shots as well Hatch. Love looking at baby pictures. Cutest age in the world. They grow up so fast

Good deal. Someone should scoop it up.
Those friggin' water filters are a fortune. I have a GE fridge also. For some reason, the first one clogged up in a couple months, but it would still dispense water, allthough a little slower. The big problem was that ice production almost stopped. Since the fridge was still under warranty, and I thought I had an ice maker problem, I called out the repair dude. He took one look and said "Filter's clogged and this won't be a warranty repair". I said fine and he put in a new filter. The price for just the filter.........$70.
I took my lumps on that one and proceeded to find replacement filters online for about $25 each, so I keep a couple on hand now. They aren't GE, but they are just as good. I couldn't find the GE replacements for less than $35.

Hopefully better than last year. I lost any sense of composure due to the huge amount of sensory stimulation in the pits. The place is insane, and awesome. I really don't know how spectators can sit in the stands for hours just watching the cars go round and round, when the pits are so much more interesting. Then again, getting in the pits is not easy.

Im not sure. I called and added it to home insurance but i also found out you can add it to your car insurance if you have full coverage so.. i did.
My fathers girlfriend's family is all law. CSI, FBI, cops, lawyers and all that. Usually they help me with a lot.
Tomorrow i was hoping to go out and shoot an event but i havent been able to find any going on. Im in the Mesa area if anyone knows anything going on between the times of 12pm - 6:30pm. Driving to California to visit my family and friends for the weekend so. Was just hoping to do something tomorrow. Let me know, thanks

Just a heads up on the Insurance thing...
If you're making money or are just a declared "Professional", chances are your homeowners/renters insurance companies will balk at insuring your gear. You may have to look into a Business Insurance policy. The nice thing is, business policies also extend to things like your computer, printer, files and other misc. stuff... FWIW, I pay about $700/yr and have full replacement, no questions asked coverage on everything I own that is related to photography. Lights, bags, CF cards, stands, tripods, etc... There is also $1,000,000 worth of liablility insurance ($2Mil Aggregate) as well as some coverage for medical expenses (mine or a "victim") and other stuff.
If you're setting foot in anyone else's home or office or have them out in the field where they could get injured on a location or by tripping over a lightstand or cable, you really ought to get some proper coverages.
Also, read the fine print to be sure they are covering you at "full replacement value." You don't want to lose say, your 40D, only to find out that they'll only give you enough to get a "new" used 40D and not a 7D which is the current equivalent model.

I will be there for the Silver Crown cars on Thurs. and the Trucks practice as well as Fri., Sat. and Sun. for everything in between.
PM me a phone number. Maybe we can get together at some point.
When you see Mark at the race you can ask him about it, but first you could read about it on his blog and hear his take on his gear loss here:
Mark's Blog (http://markjrebilas.com/blog/?p=10225)
Goddamm.
(FYI, mark also has some documentation on the firebird Antron Brown crash that took the life of a spectator with lots of included pictures)
I handed Antron a CD with my pics a couple weeks ago in Vegas.

I can never hear my phone at the track so it would really be pointless for me to give you my number because there is always some cars on track and I will have earplugs in from dusk till dawn for the next 4 days.
You can't miss me at the track, I will have the same dorky blue/white camo hat on and my backpack just like I always do. More than likely you will find me somewhere up and down pit road, along the turn two wall, shooting through one of the photo holes on the inside of the track, shooting through one of the photo holes on the outside of the track, in the garages, in the media center, or in victory lane.
If you are in the media center around feeding time I'll be the guy stuffing cookies and brownies in his pockets for snacks later during the race.

Well well. I had been having issues with the calendar battery draining on my SX-10 is, so I sent it to Canon for a look. They could not duplicate the problem either time, but oddly enough, they would ship it back to me each time with a new calendar battery which was dead by the time the camera made it to my door. The camera made it home to me today for the second time and still didn't work. I was pissed.
I called Canon and spoke to a couple of different people. The end result is that they are sending me a brand new SX-30 and refunding me the $139 repair cost. And I'll have the camera Monday.
Friggin amazing. I never would have thought they would go that extra mile.

Truly shocking. I would have been happy just being able to talk with the tech and sort through this to fix my SX-10. They don't allow that, so I guess this other option is what I'm stuck with.

.
Many thanks! It's a team effort... Kristy is giving 100% behind be me getting the kids to look my direction. Not an easy task at all... this little one was strong willed to say the least. She chilled out as the shoot progressed... a good thing :)
You images..
The good/great. Lots and lots of personality in the images... not an easy task...to capture the moments as you did.. fantastic. 1,4, 8,10 and 13 catch my eye. #4.. the Dad... he is a little clipped with the bright sun... but.. I like the moment. Very nice... she holds the attention in the shot. #2 is good as it is a loose crop of #4... but.. I like the crop on #4 more.
Some stuff to work on.. and I have to put this disclaimer in now... Kristy and I make mistakes each and every shoot.... you name a mistake... and I'm sure at some point in time we have done it. You only see what we want you to see... you don't see the 20 shots from last weekend I ruined from not having my shutter speed up high enough to stop motion blur/camera shake. SO.... don't think we just show up... shoot... and it's all unicorns and rainbows. :) LOL
#3... like the pose.. the eye contact... only thing I would do is warm it up a little... skin tones look a little cool... maybe a slight curves adjustment to give the image some "Pop"
#5... I would ditch.. looks under exposed and her expression isn't speaking to me :)
#6... I like the background... well exposed.. I would apply a curves layer here as well to bring her up... and then mask out the adjustment to not impact the already nicely exposed background.
#7... Curves adjustment to the face area.. to bring more attention to her... I like the image...
#8 same thing as #7 nice capture/pose.
#9 a little more light on her...
#10... just a fun family shot... skin tones look nice as well.
#11... I think if you would have brought the flash around to your left... you would have evenly exposed all three of them... in the shot... the Dad is hot... and the daughter is being lost in the shadows.
#12... a little more light on the face?
#13 nice interaction between the couple... wouldn't change anything .. they should love it.
#14 Something about the angle and the stare isn't doing it for me... they might dig it... it's what the client loves that matters. I can't tell you how many times Kristy and I have loves a particular shot... picked it as the "Artist Choice" to have the clients just pass it up.. and pick some shot that we just can't comprehend why they would like it . LOL
#15.. a fun shot... just a little heavy on the vignette.
Hope this helps... again.. I have to go back to the unicorns and rainbows... we all make mistakes... trick is to not repeat them. Tonights session... I made it a goal of mine to not slip up on the shutter speed... and it was a successful shoot.
Keep shooting! You'll get more comfortable over time... no worries. You have the skills. I think ...and I think Kristy will agree... the hard part isn't the technical stuff... it's the interaction between you and the clients and capturing the expressions.. or helping create the expressions... it's a huge challenge.
Ok... enough babble.. :D nice shots!

Kenney---I'm not a portraitist like Hatch so I'll give you the laymans view. Like the pose on #5 but it needs more fill light and the facial expression isn't the best. The two action shots are the weakest in the set---one hides part of her face and the other is cropped a bit too tight. All in all, very good work and you should be proud of it.

Thank you... Looks like 5 should just go in the trash, I'll leave that for now just to keep the integrity of the comments. I agree on the action ones as well. It was tough because she was actually doing cartwheels and dad we were following with the flash on a stick..

- Kenny: The biggest general "knee-jerk" nit I can throw at you: Inconsistant Exposures.
Thanks Jay, I know..:( I went into it knowing the limitations, or byproduct, of the Minitt1 and Flex 5 in ttL (and my SKILLS of course) I struggled keeping up even with the PW's so forget about being in manual. I didn't want to be fumbling to the point of making them nervous. My main goal was to get the sunset, and had it all planned in my head. I put the flash on full manual and blew the shots completely. Just have to keep on practicing.
One thing that is confusing me was it seems at longer focal lengths the aperture needs to be stopped down considerably . Some shots were f6.3 and f8 and when a persons head was a few inches behind another, the focus was off. Does that make sense?
Thanks again for the comments all..!!

Hatch - Your portraits are exceptional. That boy is so cute! Kudos to you and Kristy.
Great shots from PIR! Doug, your two shots really are knock outs.
AP - your portrait session looks really good IMHO. The suggestions put out by our fellow POTNrs should help. I know I would be proud of this set.
Jay - your Air to Air shots are awesome. Love the perspective and #4 is my favorite.
Kristy, love the portrait of the new kiddo.

Took my new flash out (Lumopro LP-160) for some test shots. I made a couple of snoots out of cereal boxes and wanted to try them out as well. Let me know what you think...
#1 - Single snooted flash, camera right. Desaturated a bit in PP.

I like this one the most. the rim light is nice... maybe the position of the snoot could have been a little higher to get all of your hair? Other than that.. I think it's a nice shot. The gel wasn't doing it for me... but... if you like it. :) Position of the main.. maybe a little more to your right... when I look at the image... my eye goes to the brightest part of the image... just under the nose... could just be the position of your head? Really minor... nice capture.

As I have mentioned to Rick... I do like zooms... I would still own them if I felt comfortable about them hitting the mark through the zoom range. I just didn't... and I sold them off for the primes. I now know... when I miss a shot... it's because of me and not because of the lens. I also think my compositions have improved some... since you zoom with your feet... you see different angles to try...
So...once these sell... what is on the short list to purchase?

All I think about is the Wall-e when you say stuff like this... I can see you riding around on your hover lawn chair slurping down 64oz sodas. bw!Technology can't replace better compositions achieved from not standing in one place and zooming for 10 shots.
We are going to battle to the death with zooms vs. primes! ;)

Difficult to challenge prime vs. zoom, unless of course you own a Nikon system.... lol.... Canon is missing the boat with accuracy on zooms.... some of us choose to live with and adjust our shooting style according,
others demand perfection and resolve to switching lenses as needed.
I think primes win it hands down (even though my bag only has one prime, and one zoom.... if the cash landed in my pocket... I'd be sure to have a nice set of primes along WITH my zooms... lol.)

Love the location of your family shoot.... where is that? West side?
The guitar pic is cool and I like the PP on it too. Looks like Mesa Art Center, maybe?
That last shot is pretty cool too.. what is the place? An athletic club, hotel, or just a clubhouse? Nice framing on it.

The location of the family shoot was at the AZ Grand Resort in Tempe.
The guitar pic was at the Mesa Art Center correct :)
The last shot was at the Wild Horse Pass Casino in Chandler. I did a shoot there for a stone company that built the fountains you see in the picture. They hired me to take some shots of their finished work.

It's a love/hate relationship. I've sold and bought a ton of stuff off CL. You get some genuine people that wont low ball you but most of them are looking for a bargain and will low ball you. You'll find a good buyer that knows what he/she are looking for and the value's of your equipment. Most the other people just got an SLR and are looking for a lens but have no idea what they need or what. Good luck with your sales! I'm sure they will go quick.

Hello to all!
I have been lurking in POTN for quite a while now with a few posts here & there.
I stumbled across this thread and was suprised to find so many AZ Photogs!
Thread title of "Another Arizona POTN get together (3)?" led me to think there were some activities that I may be able to participate in, local small trips to take advantage of AZ's beauty.
Looks like there is some tremendously talented photogs here and I am always looking to improve my new found skills.
My first love is landscape, especially here in AZ.
I have been shooting as a second for a local wedding photog which really allows me to learn a lot about my equipment.
I would love to be able to hook up with like minded folks and gleen some of their techniques & experience.
Have a great day,
Shawn Carden
