View Full Version : Odd problem with Photoshop and Rebel XT

Just got a Rebel XT and I've started messing around with the files.

For some reason, when I view the jpg's with Photoshop (CS 8.0) it's like the number of colors has been reduced. It actually looks just a bit better than 256 colors. Here is a screenshot that shows a 100% crop of a section of a photo (please ignore the fact that it's totally out of focus and the white balance is all messed up):

On the right, I'm looking at the file with Compupic Pro and it looks like it should, on the left, Photoshop. You can see that the Photoshop one seems like it's missing a lot of colors/detail.

I've figured out so far that if I change the color settings in Photoshop from the default sRGB to "Monitor RGB" it looks just fine. However, none of the other RGB settings work any better than sRGB. All other Photoshop settings are default. I don't want to leave it at Monitor RGB because every time I open a file it says I'm using the wrong color setting. That's just annoying.

Photos taken with my other two cameras, a Canon G3 and SD300, do not have the same problems. The color setting on the Rebel XT is sRGB. Haven't tried Adobe RGB with it yet, but I don't think I should have to.

Any clues as to why I'm having this problem?

To be honest with you, both images look identical on my monitors. Can't tell the difference in color at all. They both looked wahsed out.

You can set defaults in PS CS. The pics you link too look identical to me too.

hmmm. Wow that's weird. For me, looking at that picture, the hair on the photoshop side is mostly all black with a few brown highlights. On the other side, I can see the details of the hair (even though it's still blurry). Also, the juncture between the hair and the skin is very abrupt on the photoshop side while it's a normal transition on the other side.

If the two sides look exactly the same to you guys, I have no clue what the heck is going on. So now I'm stumped. Maybe it has something to do with my monitor? That would make more sense if the pictures from my other cameras did the same thing.

ps. Using Adobe RGB color with the camera didn't help.

okay. somehow I fixed it. I'm not sure how. It had to do with the monitor profile or something. Whatever I did, it worked. Well, all's well that ends well, I suppose.
