I want to get a few backup batteries for my 20D . I dont mind getting a generic brand at all considering the BP-511 is going for aroun $50 on most sites. What batteries have you guys purchased for your 20D and from what company would you suggest? What is the cheapest and the best place to go on the web?

I use no name cheapo's but do worry slightly.
The other day i wrote stirlingtec and asked if their batteries have the internal fuse that canon say is needed for safety.
Their answer was that 'our batteries are identical to canon originals but don't have a name on them'
Frankly i was hoping for more than that-i would have liked a no name brand's opinion on the fuse conroversy. It was like they were dodging the question abit

What is the worst can happen with a generic battery when used in a Drebel, 10D, 20D etc. ?
I just bought some batteries off Ebay, and I own a 300D.
thanks

the WORST that can happen? you're gonna wish you hadn't asked! Li-Ion batteries can (and do, but rarely) explode. Manufacturers call it "vent with flame" because "explode" sounds too dangerous. When a lithium based cell's voltage gets too low, metallic lithium is formed. As you may or may not know from basic chemistry classes, lithium metal is rather unstable, especially with moisture present. Worst-case scenario, the pack could explode inside your camera, destroying it, and possibly injuring you in the process. However, this -IS- worst-case scenario, and is on the order of a 1 in a billion shot of happening. But lithium-based batteries -can- and -have- exploded in customer equipment, causing injury.
I love scaring people!    ;)

The first set of generic batteries I bought only lasted 1/2 as long as the Canon battery I got at the same time and rotated in use.

I brought 3 x BP-511A battery's from
http://stores.ebay.com/MapleBattery-Super-Store
It cost me $45 Aust Dollars and they are great.
The canon original battery here in Sydney is about $125.00 so these 3 for $45 are great.
This supplier was quick and very trustworthy to deal with.
The battery's come from their Hong Kong supplier.
Very Happy and Richer hehehheheheh
Hope this help's you

I will never use Li-Ion batteries again!
I'll just buy the Digital Rebel powered by a Diesel engine
