Macro DSLR Speed Challenge #23
Automotive
Let's see something close-up that would fall under the category of automotive. You could focus on something from a car's exterior, interior, or on something under the hood. The car could be new or old. Shot by day or by night, let it be a blend of technical quality and artistic expression. No photos of toys, please!
And if you happen to be a truck person, then that subject would be welcome as well.
Well, let's roll, and . . . above all, have fun with the challenge!

Seeing how tomy has closed this challenge I figured I would say this: While we are here holding our breath waiting to see who won! (not really but...)
I just thought I would congrats all participants!
For me it was a hard macro topic, as I usually don't shoot macro photos of my truck and car. ;)
And yet all the submissions where each an excellent and different macro photo of an automobile! (to my eyes) ;)
Again to all, Well done!

I typed up the results, seen below, last night, got sleepy, and saved them as a draft to send out this morning. I just now woke up and guess I'd better paste them in and post! :D
Well, the win goes to John_B for the dipstick . . . sure did like the red and amber colors.
I wonder if that's a light (tailight?) in the background . . .
And, I must salute badgerW for the superb image quality.
Congrats, also, to lavanut for the nice abstract effect.
Nice job Flo and monty28428 for interesting images with an "old" theme . . . looks like you photographed my car!
Great efforts, all, on a somewhat difficult challenge!

I liked your shot too, John. A nice set of 3 Cs... clarity, color & composition!
The other shots were good as well. This was a tough assignment. I had one idea I wanted to try, but I couldn't pull it together in time. It involved the side mirror and the "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" text. There was potential...
Flo, I hope that tire wasn't on a wheel that was in use!

 Doesn't that just figure? ???
 I thought for sure I would loose
tomy,
Thanks, and yes it was a rear tail reflector in the background. The oil was actually cleaner (good thing!) so to give it the color I took a drop or two of real dirty oil from the oil change I just gave my tractor and it blended quite well ;)
The reason why I thought I wouldn't win was because I personally wasn't to happy with the photo because of the overpowering reflection (the white above the letter A in ADD).
Go figure? ???
Thanks all :)

LOL -- I don't think you can see through the oil in my car :-)
It's a cracking shot John and I was sure you had the win!

Congrats John. I liked yours the best too. It is a nice composition with the colors and everything.
This was my first competition and it was interesting to see the entries. I think the best part about it is that it forces you to go out and take a bunch of photos and see what works and what doesn't. I had tire tread shots and turn-signal-bulb shots, but they did not look nearly as good as the ones that others submitted. It was also very difficult to look through 100 or so shots and pick the one that I liked the best (or that I thought had the best chance to win).
BTW, what is the guideline for what is an actual "Macro" shot? I felt like mine was pushing it a bit. I know that it was less than 2:1, but on a full-frame sensor like the 5D, that is a pretty big area (2:1 would be what, an area of 2"'x3" or so). To me, "Macro" should be smaller than that. Like, the size of a quarter at most, say 1" square. It's funny because I guess I can't really get any smaller than that with a 5D and the 100mm Macro.
Anyway, thanks for the challenge, I will be sure to participate in the next one!

badgerW,
Thanks, I thought your photo and the name was great "Squirter" Oh and I know the feeling, it was a tough subject and I got lucky with the Dip Stick idea ;) Your photo helped give me the idea for the new topic, just a tiny bit in focus thus f/2.8 :)
The strict guideline for a true Macro photo is 1:1 known as Life Size. This is when a subject that is ex. 6cm shows as 6cm on the sensor. This is true whether using a 1.6 sensor of a FF sensor like the 5D, even though it looks bigger on a 1.6 sensor like is shown here in a photo of currency at Macro Variations (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=578274). However many including camera companies call 1:2 even 1:3 as macro, so I personally accept it here :)
The number you used 2:1 is 2x magnification ex. the 6cm subject shows up as 12cm on the sensor ;)
