This is just what I see (a very junior member who has yet to post)
Having the main focus on the forward post detracts from the overall image, it makes one focus their attention on the post instead of taking in the whole scene; try using the hyperfocal distance. Is it cropped?
If you go back to the area, look at other angles, try putting the forward post at the side with no background visible on the left.

Andy,
You did well over all, the B&W conversion is a little flat but that's to be expected since there doesn't seem anything else you could have done with it.
The composition is also good as far as placement but you need something for us to look at, to draw our attention to. A nice sunset, a weird sky, a boat that doesn't belong ... something.
When you find that extra subject for us to look at, to keep the scene in check you can add something in the foreground to keep us interested and lead the eye to your subject. In that case you need to do a hyper focal calculations, which really means depending on yoru lens ((WIDE ANGLE like 14-24mm or so), you close down your f-stop (f16 to f22), set to manual focus and focus to infinity and back off a little. (That's the very VERY simple way of doing hyper focal -- check out http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html for the actual calculations that will give from how far to how far your image will be in focus -- depending on your focal length.

I don't know if it's my eyes, but the foreground post seems out of focus. I think if it was sharp, it'd work quite well for me. ;)
